Yes but only a handful of times when I"m really sleep deprived. They suck big time!

@locavore_mama: I haven't had to make that choice while breastfeeding so I'm not sure. Dr. Google seems to be coming back with conflicting results.

Unfortunately yes. I took Valtrex daily as a preventative for 2 years and now I only get one a couple times a year, usually when I'm stressed, sleep deprived, and once when I got too much sun on my face. If I get one now, I do a round of Valtrex and get it lasered by my dentist. And lots of Abreva.
Sorry to hear about your LO. My dad gets them and I remember as a kid him being really strict about not sharing his drinks and not getting kisses when he had one. Hope LO's heals quickly.

I don't get cold sores but I get canker sores! I think they may be related.. I used to take Lysine to ward them off when I was really stressed in college. Seemed to help..

I don't get them but routine blood work showed I had definitely been exposed to HSV-1 at some point and have the antibodies for it. My doctor said a huge percentage of the population has the antibodies and that she's more shocked if blood work shows a person hasn't been exposed than if it shows they have. DH gets them when he's sick/stressed/gets too much sun and I don't worry about catching it because I know I've already got it. Some people are just more prone to developing the sores, I guess?

Nope. My mom and dad both have them but they were careful not to pass them on to their children.

No, I don't. I had a nervous breakdown a few months back because my MIL gets them and was kissing O during a breakout. I wanted to kill her!
Growing up, one of my moms BFFs got them and was obsessive about not letting anyone share drinks, etc with her during a breakout.

@IRunForFun: interesting.
@locavore_mama: I don't get them, but my mom does. Since I can remember she's always used penatan or zinc when she gets the tingly feeling.

Can you believe I got another cold sore?! I have had like 3 in the last 6 weeks. Of course I completely forgot about the lysine this morning.
But I did get these cold sore patches that are suppose to help reduce the length of them. Added bonus they kinda cover up the red ugliness. Ugh.

I'm kinda annoyed that I have gotten like FIVE In the past month and half. I currently have two that just started and it's so painful.

Hmm... I'm not sure if I've had one before! I have friends that get them regularly though and they suck!

@bluestriped bee: @BoogieBea: how many lysine tablets do you take at the onset of tingling? Second one in a month. Ugh. Of course stress and exhaustion related with a horrible sleeper!!!
Kellymom considers it "safe"....

@regberadaisy: I just followed the dosage on the bottle. I think it's usually 1 or 2 tabs a day? Similar to other vitamin supplements. Abreva, the topical cream used to work for me too - though it's kind of pricy. Sorry you're getting cold sores again. Hope you can get some needed rest soon.

Chiming in to say I never get them, but my DH used to all the time, until he started taking Lysine every day. OTC at places like Target and Walmart, like pp's have said.

@regberadaisy: I follow the directions on the bottle, but I also use lysine lip balm. Also, google lysine rich foods.

@regberadaisy: Did those patches help? Ive never gotten them really bad but right now I have one thats growing and Abreva isn't helping.

@T.H.O.U.: I feel like they definitely helped to shorten the life span of them. Sorry you have one! They suck.

I got another one and I don't feel like I was super stressed, like I've been when I got them before.
It was a full blown out cold sore with lots of crusties so I really do believe in lysine balm to keep it from getting worse. I had a tiny sore but wore the balm all the time and it has kept it from getting worse.

Boooo I just got my first cold sore. Thanks for all the good advice on this thread. About to head to Walgreens to stock up on the essentials

@regberadaisy: did you figure out why you were getting so many? Stress? Sleep deprived?
@youboots: ugh! sorry to hear.... I have one just finishing up, didn't really do anything for it, as it was in an OK spot. Milk does help to ease the pain a bit, it coats it.

@regberadaisy: My DD gets cold sores about 4 times a year - ugh! Do you think these patches can be used on kids?
