My SIL had a sprinkle for her second, but it was also 6 years after her first, so she no longer had any of the baby gear or clothes from her older child, so it made sense in that case! I didn't have a sprinkle for my second because I was having another boy, they were only going to be 22 months apart, and I still had all the gear/clothes from my first.

So I think it depends! How old are your sister's other children? And is this third child a different gender from the other two?

I don't have an issue with them. I don't think I would have one but don't think negatively if someone else does. A good friend of mine is having one. The kids will be 3 years apart and she's having a girl when first was a boy. So I can see her reasoning. Sister is throwing it.

ETA maybe a sip n see is better? Since you're concerned that no one else has had a sprinkle. They are generally less gift oriented but people will still probably bring something.

The very definition of a sprinkle is that it's small and casual---much much much less than a shower. So a sprinkle can be no gifts, or can be a diaper shower, or a book shower, or something simple.

I don't mind them. My little group of mom friends had a tiny sprinkle for me and I was so honored, since we haven't been friends for long. We all went to brunch and even though I said no gifts, they all brought gifts and picked up the tab for me. I thought it was so sweet.

I have mixed feelings. On one hand, I think, why not? If you have loving people that want to take care of you- every baby deserves to be celebrated. On the other hand, personally, I am not really a shower person, although I am all about celebrating babies!

I think each child should be celebrated so I'm all in favor of them. As @yin: said, it sucks for the younger child to get the short end of the stick.

I just threw one for a good friend who never had a shower, with her first (not a common tradition, where she's from). It was small and casual, but she was so touched.

Overall, I think they can be sweet and meaningful, but I also don't think they should be expected. I recently had a bizarre conversation with a friend who is expecting another of the same sex, only a few years after her first. She was very heated that none of her local friends had thought to throw her one, and I was a little taken aback.

I feel kind of meh about sprinkles. It's not common in my family or my husbands, but some of my friends have had them, and this was for babies of the same sex and a small age gap. My problem was that even though they called it a "sprinkle," they had very thorough registries with lots of expensive items and everyone brought $50+ gifts. I'm all for visiting a new parent after the baby is born and bringing a small gift and some food, but I don't think a sprinkle or shower is necessary with each baby. Some people are planning to have big families too, so it seems a little redundant.

I think it depends and in you case I would say no! I don't think she should have asked for one for herself and it definitely sounds gift grabby, plus she doesn't sound like she will appreciate you throwing her a party. A friend who I don't see too often found out she was having another girl (2 years apart) right around the time we were having lunch so I gave her a gift when I saw her. Then later I was invited to her "diaper shower" and a "fill my freezer party" plus she had a "meet the baby/housewarming" party after the birth because they had just moved. I felt a little bad because I am usually a supportive friend but to be honest I thought it was too much especially for a second baby of the same gender.

I'm not against sprinkles or showers but think that they should be thrown because the giver came up with the idea and wants to do so. The pregnant person should not be asking for a sprinkle... or a shower... in my opinion.

So in this case, I think she's in the wrong. That said, if you wanted to throw her a sprinkle and it was your idea, then I think it would be perfectly fine to do so!

I'm not a fan of sprinkles in general, and I'm SUPER not a fan of your sister asking you to throw her a party to get presents! It's pretty funny, though, that she thinks she should get a party because she's the first person to have a third child.

I like the idea of a "sprinkle"- as a celebration for subsequent children, but to me it's really just a baby shower. In the case of a mom with kids close in age like your sister I don't like it so much.

I don't mind them - my group of friends from when I had my son throws showers for everyone, regardless of number of kids, gender, spacing. They just love celebrating new babies. But the expecting mothers don't ask for someone to through a sprinkle - other people offer (and they're often joint showers, too).

Perhaps you can offer to meet up with some friends and family for a celebratory dinner instead? But I don't think you're in the wrong for turning down her request for you to host a party.

As a second child (lol), I like the idea of a celebration for each baby. I had a sprinkle. It wasn't big, and a lot of "new" mom friends were invited that I didn't know when I had DS1. It was also a "no gift necessary".

That being said, in your sisters case, I understand your hesitance and I probably wouldn't do it either. Especially if it's her third and nothing was done with the 2nd. It's just kinda....weird.

I like them! I think all babies should be celebrated!

But I don't think the mom-to-be should be asking for one. Either someone offers to throw you one or they don't.

I'm not a huge fan of sprinkles for the same sex as the first baby. I think each baby should be celebrated but delivering the mom a meal and flowers after the baby is born is a way to celebrate too!

Typically they are thrown by a friend, as opposed to the mama herself, right? That's how it is in my circle. My friend just threw me a sprinkle for my second. That said, I would never have asked her to or thrown it myself, and I think it goes without saying that gifts are not required.

I think your answer and reasoning were perfectly reasonable given the way your family does things!
