We have 19 original windows that are now 75 years old, not including an egress window and 4 glass block windows in the basement. Half of them don't even work properly and I'm sure you can imagine what the utility bills look like. We decided to go for it and get them replaced. I feel like our house has way more windows than the average home though. How many windows does your house have?

16, if I'm counting correctly. The building was built in 1920, but the windows must have been replaced relatively recently because they're in great shape and don't seem to let in the cold air, which is nice.

26 original windows! The house was built in 1990 and we HAD to replace them when we bought the house 3.5 years ago. It was... quite the painful investment.

If you have one large window (that really has two sides that open separately), do you count that as one window or two?
If you count it as one, we have 10. If you count it as two, we have 18.

2 in split level for office & another bathroom

17 on three sides. The fourth side is really close to the neighbors and only has windows on the lower level. They really could have a done a window on that fourth side for light, but this house was built in 1963.

Hmmm....a lot. Almost 30 that I can think of off the top of my head - there's 10 in our master suite alone. Luckily, they are new and high quality.

We live in a stacked townhouse with people above us and on three sides, so we only have windows on the front of the house. One is a sliding door, and one is floor to ceiling, and the rest are quite wide.

I'm counting 17, off the top of my head. We had them replaced shortly after we moved in. Well, we did the first floor first and then went back and did the second floor. The guy who did our first floor windows totally ripped us off. Lowes did the second floor and they're great.

@littlebug: We have been doing our research for a while now and we got quotes as high as $1,800 per window, what?! We finally got a really good quote with everything we wanted and 0% interest so we are going for it. It really is needed.

28 not including the basement windows. We are slowly replacing/refinishing the oldest ones but it is SO expensive!

@Bao: Yeah, for the first floor - the guy did 6 (maybe 7) windows, 2 screen doors, and our front door. He charged us $10K. AND he said they were high quality windows, we'd never have any problems with furniture fading, yada yada. Well, 5 years later and the back of our red couch is orange. If the guy was still in business, I'd take him to court, cuz I'm pretty sure we had a "guarantee" of some sort. But, not surprisingly, he went out of business not long after doing our windows. He took advantage of us cuz it was (very obviously) our first major home project.

@littlebug: Oh my goodness that's terrible! Our price is a couple thousand less than that for 19 windows. I felt that some of the companies that came here were trying to screw us over because we are young and like you this is our first ever big project. One guy quoted us $6,900k for 4 windows and we said you are nuts and he goes ok ok how about $4,300. No just leave, don't try and play us like that.

If you count the multiple casement windows next to each other to form a giant window...... 27. Just window openings.... 12. Thank goodness they are all already double pane newish windows! There are 3 in the basement that we need to replace.

37.... I sometimes feel like we don't have walls.... Or house is only 1450 sq/ft so it isn't like we have a huge house either. I will take it for the gorgeous 15 ft long bay windows in our living room and master.

Too many, and they're original to the house and all need replaced.
We have 24 regular full sized windows, a huge picture window, and two small windows in our basement... so 27 total. Our estimate to replace just the regular windows was $9,500.... so needless to say, we'll be waiting on that project for awhile.

@littlebug: @bao: It's so hard to get a fair estimate! And everyone has a special price if you book them now, which of course will go up if you wait more than a day (in case you want other estimates). Annoying!

Not including basement windows, we had 20. We got them all replaced in February and had 18 installed. We had 3 side by side windows in our family room that we combined into one, big, glorious window!

Only 5!
Well, technically 7 if you include the windows that are double wide. Plus we have french doors in the back. We live in a middle townhome, so we only have windows in the front and back. I hate it! I want windows on the side of the house, dammit! I love natural light and hate when I have to turn on a light during the day when it's rainy outside.

9. They're pretty large windows though. Our house is a long rectangle - single story, so there are windows on the front and back, but not on the sides.

22 not including the ones in the doors. Almost all were just replaced when we bought the house and we just did the 5 basement windows. Windows are expensive!!

31 is my closest estimate since I'm not at home. They are almost all original to our 100+ year old home. They are also much bigger than standard so I can't imagine that we would replace them any time soon. Even though our heating bills were huge this winter it would be an absolute fortune to replace them.

It depends on if double windows are counted as one (per panel) or two. We have a bunch of double windows and some are separated by a tiny bit of wall in between.
Counting per panel (the number of curtains that cover each window): 13 upstairs, 21 downstairs.
