... how awful was it? LO has pneumonia and has had a fever for 6 days. If we don't get a positive RSV swab and she still has a fever tomorrow she will have a blood draw and urine collection.
DH will be staying home with LO tomorrow. Should I take off work to be there?

Chloe has had three: one to confirm a UTI in the emergency room, one at the peds office to confirm the infection was gone, and one when she was maybe 14ish months to rule out a UTI.
It was more painful for me. I cried like a baby. My kid never flinched.
I would make/be at the appointment, though my husband was not available to be at one of the three Chloe had done. It was truly so quick, easy and painless that it didn't alter her day in any way.

B had one at 5 days old. I left the room because I couldn't handle it, he took it like a champ (according to my mom and husband).

I have done them on babies lots, we usually give them a sucrose dipped soother and a touch of lidocaine gel over the urethra so they do ok,

C had one for a week after his surgery. It was no big deal at all for him. It ended up falling out, and the urologist reinserted it without him even fussing. He didn't even need the sweet - ease dipped pacifier, he was perfectly content to play with the name badge of one of the RNs.

Can they do the urine collection with a bag? We recently had LO tested for a UTI at the ped's office and they used a bag with an adhesive that seals around the area and then just peels off after she pees.

Yikes! Pneumonia? I guess she's on antibiotics already? Generally the catheter shouldn't be too big a deal, as long as the nurses are experienced (being restrained might be the worst part). Some clinics will do bag collection, but there's a much higher risk of contaminating the urine culture that way. How old is your LO?

Coincidentally my friend's baby had one today and she said no lidocaine gel... and that it was awful. We have the same HMO so I'm guessing LO won't have it either.
@FliegepilzHut: Yes, she's on day 5 of antibiotics. She's 13 months.
Still hoping for a positive RSV test or better yet, for the fever to go away so we can skip the catheter all together.

Generally in younger ages it's brochiolitis. Hopefully fevers stay away so that you don't need a rule out sepsis (only done for fevers in under three months of age). I see that she's 13 months... We get concerned at 5 days of fever at that age.
Watch for signs of respiratory distress and try to keep hydration up and stay in close touch with your doctor.

The RSV test came back positive so we don't need to do the catheter (according to her pediatrician yesterday, still waiting for confirmation)!
@Mrs. Jacks: Thanks, she does have a pneumonia and we've been working closely with her doctor. Albuterol, flovent, prednisone (stopped yesterday), and antibiotics (day 6) originally prescribed by urgent care.

@Corduroy: poor baby! Glad you are working closely with your health care provider. If the fever is persisting on antibiotics, it's likely either viral pneumonia (which means the antiviotic wont help) or a complicated pneumonia (pleural effusion etc), so keep a close eye to tell which
