@bluestriped bee: That's great news! How big did they say your follies are getting? BTW-- icing before the Menopur made a BIG difference for me!
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@FliegepilzHut: I didn't catch the sizes for both sides but I did see at least 3 that were 11mm. Oh, I'll try icing it tonight for the menopur. Thanks!

@bluestriped bee: Awesome! You will have lots and lots of follies at this rate!
pomegranate / 3764 posts
@GreenThumb: You're almost there! Huzzah!
@bluestriped bee: Sounds like all is going well with those follies. *cheer squad*

@bluestriped bee: So glad to hear that you are responding well!! That is great news! And definitely hope that the injections get better, too.
@FliegepilzHut: That is a good idea about asking the insurance (when the time comes, cart before horse and all!). How are you doing?
@jaguar: Thank you!!
AFM: Two annoying thingsā¦ 1 - AF arrived yesterday! Finished BCPs on Friday so I don't know why I am surprised, but I hope this is the last period I have for a LONG time . 2 - Somehow I thought I didn't need extra insulin needles that the clinic ordered for me so I didn't get them. Oops, of course I need them! Luckily I can get them from CVS without a prescription. It's like I haven't been through this two times already. At least that's an easy fix.

@bluestriped bee: Sounds like you had a great first monitoring session. Your retrieval will be here before you know it! Are you planning to do ICSI?
@GreenThumb: I hope that AF stays away for a good long time after this for you too!

@FliegepilzHut: @jaguar: @GreenThumb: @mrswin: Thanks! Today's appt went well, again. She said my ER will most likely be this Saturday! I'm going to start Ganarelix tomorrow since my largest follicle today was 13 mm. I go back for another u/s & b/w on Wednesday. I did notice after the ultrasound that I was really crampy and really tired. Nurse said the high estrogen levels tires you out.
@GreenThumb: Injections are going better now that I'm icing the spot before and after.
@mrswin: Yup, we plan on doing ICSI. I think half & half.

@jaguar: A belated congrats on your BFP!
@bluestriped bee: So glad to see you're responding well to the meds! Hmm, icing the spot, I'm going to have to try that next round. The Ganarelix was painful for me and left me sore for like an hr at the injection spot. Hope you have better luck with it!
pomegranate / 3533 posts
@GreenThumb: I'm well! I've decided to go ahead with a hypercoagulable work-up just to be on the safe side (2 early losses), but my SHG apparently looked great! I've got a little less than 2 weeks of BCPs left! FX that you won't have AF for another 9 months at least!
@bluestriped bee: That's fantastic! Keep up the good work!!! (Also, hydrate, hydrate, hydrate and hit the nachos! )
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@PurplePumps: oh, man, really? Menopur has been pretty bad the last two days. I definitely don't look forward to it. So tomorrow night, I'll have to two hurtful shots.
@FliegepilzHut: Haha. Nachos sound good, right now! Mmmmm... Oh, I wasn't told to hydrate but after googling it, I should. Thanks for the tips!

@bluestriped bee: Only menopur burned for me. Not the ganirelix. And icing beforehand really helped with the menopur. So excited for you! Lots of follies is great!!!
@FliegepilzHut: So excited for your next cycle!!! I'm glad it is almost here for you.
@jaguar: I didn't realize you got a BFP. Yay!! Congrats!!!!!!!
pomegranate / 3809 posts
@bluestriped bee: I did Gonal, so I dont' know what Menopur is like. But I'm a HUUUGE wuss ( I couldn't even bear to do any of the injections myself!) and the Gonal need was TINY compared to the Ganirelix.
nectarine / 2433 posts
@bluestriped bee: For me the Ganirelix wasn't bad except that the needle was sooooooo dull and wider than the Gonal F needles so it was harder to inject . I also got a small hive at the injection site with this injection so I don't know if it was a mild allergic reaction but the nurse said it happens to some people and not to worry about it. Silver lining = Ganirelix means ER is close!
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@Jenn23: Oh, cool. I'm hoping it doesn't hurt.
@PurplePumps: Oh, I should see what size the Ganrelix needle is. I feel like the Follistim mini needles are smaller than the needles for Menopur. I think it's 28 or 29 gauge. Yup, ganerelix means the ER is close!
@mrswin: Oh, you got a hive? I'm bruising from some of my shots. I think it was from the shots I did early on and for some reason it's bruising on the ones on the left of my belly button and not the right. So I can't even figure out if it's related to a specific shot. I think it's probably injection technique or something. The icing has helped.
grapefruit / 4703 posts
@bluestriped bee: yep, ditto what mrswin said about the hive/welt. The Menopur burns going in, but then it's fine. The Ganirelix is fine going in, but then it burns for a bit after. So my advice is ice before the Menopur, and after the Ganirelix Glad you're responding so well!!
pear / 1556 posts
@bluestriped bee: I didn't take Granirelix, but for me the only shot I took that burned was the Menopur. Ick! It sounds like you're responding really well! That's awesome!
Well, I found out on Monday that I definitely have a blighted ovum. I'm devastated, but I feel very fortunate that I have some frosties this cycle and don't have to jump back into a fresh cycle the way I did with IVF #1. I'm scared though that all of my frosties aren't good. My RE said that was highly unlikely, but of course I am worried. I saw my RE's partner on Monday and he wants me to try to m/c on my own rather than have a D&C. I stopped progesterone on Monday night, and so far, nothing. He also gave me a prescription to start in a week if I'm not progressing. Honestly, waiting around for it to happen is kind of torture, I just want it over. The nurse said "well we can talk about moving on when you're ready." In regards to starting an FET. Is it weird that I just want to move on ASAP? I'm so impatient!
nectarine / 2433 posts
@Sunshine1810: I'm sorry and I don't think it is weird that you want to move on right away, you have to do what makes you feel best.
pear / 1556 posts
@mrswin: Thanks I think part of it is just because I know how long everything takes and I at least want to start thinking about scheduling so it doesn't take 6 months to get me scheduled. Waiting is so hard.
pomegranate / 3809 posts
@Sunshine1810: *Hugs* I'm so sorry! I totally understand wanting to jump right in after waiting all this time and wanting to have a child like yesterday (or more like last year). Definitely not weird, I was ready to go right back in for IVF#2 if it wasn't for insurance. Just do what's best for your body and mind though. If you're ready for a FET physically and emotionally, I say go for it!
pear / 1556 posts
@PurplePumps: Thank you! I think once my body is physically ready, then emotionally I am ready. I know it's going to take time because my levels have to come down and all that. I just feel like at this point I have been waiting for a baby for over 3 years, and it's getting harder and harder to be patient!
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@Shutterbug: @Sunshine1810: Ok, ganarelix wasn't that bad yesterday. Going in or after. I did ice it, though.
So I had my u/s today and my follicles are ready! Some are at the 18 mm mark. I didn't count how many. So my ER will be on Friday! I'm waiting on an email to hear my next steps. I know I'll be going in tomorrow for another u/s & b/w. DH will be dropping off a sample to freeze tomorrow (for a backup).
So one question I've been wondering is about ICSI. I know we are going to do it but should I do all ICSI or half & half? Will ICSI increase my fertilization rate? Also, will it increase the number that ends up being frozen? I thought I would do half ICSI so I have ones that are naturally fertilizing, but then again from my 6 failed IUIs maybe I need to do all ICSI.
@Sunshine1810: Awww, I'm so sorry. Thinking of you. Hope you get started with your next cycle soon.
pear / 1556 posts
@bluestriped bee: I'm so excited for you! Yay!!! Good luck on Friday! And thank you for the thoughts, I appreciate it!
nectarine / 2433 posts
@bluestriped bee: Glad that the Ganarelix wasn't too bad for you. Crazy that your ER is almost here! We ended up deciding to do all ICSI, the RE initially recommended 50%/50%. Our reasoning was as follows
1. We knew we had MF issues
2. I had a borderline DOR diagnosis and we were concerned that egg quality may not be great
3. We wanted to know that we had the best chance possible and everything I have read says between 70%-80% fertilization rate with ICSI
4. There was no discount for only doing 50%
To answer your questions it will likely help with the fertilization rate but how many you have left to freeze will totally depend on how many continue to grow normally once they are fertilized. Our clinic suggests that about 30% of mature fertilized embryos will progress to blasts and be able to be frozen. Of the 11 we had at 3dpER we had 3 make it to 5dpER. We transferred 1 and have 2 frozen

@bluestriped bee: Sorry I missed the ICSI question. DH has an issue with the volume of the semen he produces. For last cycle he only had 1ml, so they recommended ICSI. You do have a higher fertilization rate with ICSI and our RE thought we had a much better chance using it for all of my eggs.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@mrswin: Excellent! Thank you! That makes perfect sense to do all ICSI! Plus, all of your reason apply to me. We've had history of have MF issues but lately it hasn't been a problem. I have been diagnosed with DOR. Though, I think there is a price difference if I do ICSI with more than 7 eggs, I think. I need to recheck the price sheet.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@Sunshine1810: Oh, I think I added the question after you responded.
pomegranate / 3809 posts
@bluestriped bee: Unfortunately, the answer to ICSI can only be known after it's too late to make the decision. We were going to do 50/50%, but ultimately decided to do all natural assuming that there'd be no issues and that out of 16 eggs, surely a fair number should fertilize normally. Boy were we wrong, and I kicked myself for not doing 50/50 for a while, but it's nothing we could have known. It would help fertilization rates if there was something wrong (according to my RE, natural vs ICSI rates are the same - if nothing is wrong) but it wont help with getting more frosties or how they develop. That is still left entirely up to chance with the sperm they happen to pick.
kiwi / 613 posts
@bluestriped bee: If I were you, I would definitely do ICSI on all, instead of just 50%. I wouldn't want the "what ifs" hanging over my head if my natural fertilization rate wasn't too stellar. We've only ever done ICSI, though, because we had borderline morphology. Sounds like things are going so well for you this cycle-- good luck with the trigger shot tonight!
@Sunshine1810: I'm so sorry to hear about the blighted ovum. You've been through so much, and I know it's hard to stay strong after all this time. I get the urge to "move on" as soon as possible - I always want to start the next cycle as soon as I'm able. At least with a FET, your body won't go through as much next time, so it will be a bit more relaxing for you. It's excellent that you have so many frozen to try with!!!
Had my second endometrial "scratch" biopsy this morning, and it was definitely less painful than my first one last Friday (I think the 800mg of ibuprofen versus 400mg really helped). Here's hoping going through these helps for my upcoming cycle! I will start stims in about a week.
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@PurplePumps: Yeah, I was afraid that it was all up to chance.
@momazon: Thanks. I guess we'll decide after the ER. I'm leaning towards doing it all ICSI.
kiwi / 613 posts
@bluestriped bee: Just a heads up - for ours, we had to confirm what we wanted before the ER, when the doctor who was doing the procedure met with us pre-retrieval. Maybe this is in case you're too out of it immediately after the ER?
My clinic uses PICSI dishes, which is slightly different to standard ICSI - I'd never heard of it before but apparently it helps them to select better quality, more mature sperm? Your clinic might already do this too?
pear / 1556 posts
@momazon: Thank you! I definitely am fortunate that we have frosties, and I am so thankful for that. It is encouraging to hear that FET's are a little bit easier to go through. I am SO hopeful for your upcoming cycle! My thoughts and prayers are with you!
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
@momazon: Oh, thanks for the heads up. We will probably need to discuss it tonight when I get home. I think sadly, the decision will come down to money for us.
pear / 1986 posts
@Sunshine1810: I just wanted to say again how sorry I am about your loss. I definitely understand the urge to move on quickly. My FET protocol takes about 2 months total, so I think I waited 1 full cycle then started in on the protocol after my fresh cycle didn't work out.
@bluestriped bee: We did 100% ICSI because of sperm morphology issues. I think we would have had a lower fertilization rate without ICSI and therefore ultimately less embryos to freeze. Stinks that there is a $$ difference !
@momazon: Wishing you all the best for this cycle!!
AFM: I had my first monitoring ultrasound and blood draw yesterday. Everything looks good and I am sufficiently suppressed so I'll start on estrogen patches on Saturday. Next up, lining check on 11/11. Getting really excited! Just 23 days before transfer !

@GreenThumb: Thank you! Glad everything looked good with your u/s! So excited for you!!!!

Ok, lots to do the next few days...
Tonight: Ganarelix at 6:30p, then trigger (double) shot at 11pm and followed by last follistim shot. Boo! 4 shots tonight but I'm done with shots after tonight!! Woohoo!
Thursday: 10:30a for b/w (no u/s) (& IVF consent form sign) and accupunture at noon
Friday: 8:30a appt for accpunture and 10am arrive in office for ER! Happy Halloween! Will I be in bed and miss giving out candy this year? Ah, it's okay.
pomegranate / 3809 posts
@bluestriped bee: Wow, thats a lot of shots tonight! It's a good feeling to know the shots are done huh? Good luck!!

@bluestriped bee: Such a busy end of the week! Good luck tonight with the shots and hope all is well tomorrow. Friday will be here before you know it!
pomegranate / 3533 posts
@Sunshine1810: I also just wanted to "get on with it"... I sincerely hope that your m/c starts on its own or that the meds work for you. So very sorry that you're going through this...
