I think that would be lovely. Do you think the daycare is planning on doing something? There might be other parents in the class who have the same impulse and you could get together and do a combined gift, maybe a meal delivery service or something?

@Mrs. Blue: I think the stuffed animal is super sweet for the girl. Again, I don't think the restaurant gift card is wrong by any means, I'm just more of a practical person and think an amazon card or something would be awesome. There's no really wrong answer to this.

What a sad situation. I think I would try to organize a collection from other families that are willing to donate cash and then put it towards a practical gift like @Eko: suggested. At the very least, I would definitely give them a card. It's nice to know people are thinking of you when a loved one passes.

I think a gift card to a grocery store with a good prepared foods section would be great. It's also possible if any families are closer to the family that they'll know of a meal train that is being organized or a go fund me site. (I had a similar situation at my office with a colleague's LO passing unexpectedly, and word about both spread quickly.)

For the little girl, what about putting together a small bag of activities she can do quietly/without a ton of assistance? Color wonder markers/paper or coloring book, Melissa and Doug reusable stickers, or a Water Wow book would be good options.

I wouldn't do the stuffed animal for a few reasons ... one: there's no way of knowing how the family is approaching his death with the LO. two: most parents hate stuffed animals, and beyond that, it's a tangible memory of this time (which some people would embrace, but others wouldn't want to).

I think a gift card to anywhere is a nice gesture. I also agree about checking in later as well. Arrange a time for their LO to come have a play date so that mom can have some time to breathe and do something for herself.

That is so sad. I would definitely send a gift card for the mom, and maybe a few toys/activities for the girl.

My dad passed away unexpectedly when I was young, and my mom had zero interest in food or leaving the house. Granted, everyone mourns differently, but I agree with @yoursilverlining that Visa gift cards are a good idea, so then the money can go where it is needed.
