Maybe a flowy printed tank or blouse to wear under a cardi with skinny jeans and boots? I tend to avoid wearing scarves in family photos because I think they add to much bulk and make it look like I have no neck I have added a pretty statement necklace instead. I also like to wear darker colors in fall photos for some reason, maybe they look better against the bright fall leaves?

We're not doing photos this year, we did them last year and I wore trouser jeans, leopard print ballet flats and a cabled turtleneck sweater in cream. I liked it because it popped against the fall leaves.

@Foodnerd81: hmm...if it's November, I guess all the fall colors will be gone? Are going for traditional fall colors (mustard yellow, maroon, brown, etc) or something else?

A friend recommended this sweater to me and I bought a couple last year in different colors and am going to order more this year. The sweater is warm, flattering because of the criss/cross shape, very good for nursing or pumping and fairly warm. Really warm (like too warm for me to wear inside at work) if you wear over a long sleeve top.

You can wear with leggings or skinny jeans with either tall boots or short booties.

I did cream colors this year. I wore a navy shell with a cream cardigan and had dh wear a cream Polo. The kids wore cream and brown or cream and gold.

A friend of mine swears by shopping at Old Navy for family pics. The fall collection generally has complementary colors, so everyone ends up looking coordinated, but not too matchy, matchy.

@Anagram: I like the idea of the scarf. Mom can wear a multi colored scarf with a pretty sweater and jeans and booties and the rest of the family can coordinate around the scarf colors with sweaters and jeans and button downs.

Bloomingdales has some great deals on cashmere sweaters right now. Aqua and C by Bloomingdales brands. It's still cashmere so it's not Old Navy prices. But $100 for a cashmere sweater is a good deal and a classic you'll wear forever.
I got a cheap multicolores plaid scarf from ON last weekend that would be great.
Nordstrom has a cheap line called BP that tons of fashion bloggers are wearing. My friend swears by their sweaters as the softest ever (and less than $50). They also have great booties, scarves and necklaces.

@Foodnerd81: If you don't feel comfortable in a scarf, def don't do it. I know what you mean, everyone might look at you and tell you you look great, but you won't feel good and it'll show.

I still like the idea of you, DH or kids in a multi colored plaid and then using solid colors from the plaid to pull everyone together. So maybe do a plaid shirt for you with an open cardigan and booties and a cute necklace, then solid colors for kids and DH.
I have a perfect vision in my head but having trouble finding it put together online!

We just did our family photos last weekend. I picked dd's outfit and then ours. I wanted dd to be brighter / stand out the most against us. So I wore a floral shirt w navy background and dh wore a navy button down

ETA: dh and I wore jeans/brown shoes

I like the girls dress in the second picture with the skirt from the first. You and DHs look nice

@looch: yep start with the pickiest. The worst is when you have everything picked out but the one who is the pickiest and then can't find what they would like to wear. @Foodnerd81: thank you! Umm pretty sure our photographer was making a joke about farts and got everyone to laugh. :). If your daughter likes the pink dress best I would maybe go with that. That way she's happy on picture day.

I'm with your daughter, actually, I like the light pink the best. I think a mix of lights and darks lets everybody stand out.
