nickname

I'd go with nicknames ... but then I'm not very formal and it feels more personalized IMO when it's the nickname.

I would get the full name

@Adira: I have a full name and nickname and have always gone by my NN. I have an ornament from childhood that has my full name and I kind of hate it because its so not me.

So, it could go either way - he may always use his NN or not - hard to say

I would get the full name. My family always called me by a nickname until I was old enough to hate it (I was probably 6 or 7 when I asked to be called by my whole name).

I'd get his nn.

I have an extremely unique middle name and a nn from it. Everyone in my family still calls me that and everything from childhood says it. If it said my first name it'd be odd because literally only people at work call me that.

@Adira: Yes, he's always gone by Alex. Do you think you will always call him Xander or would you change it if he starts being called Alex at school? If you think he will always be Xander to you, I'd go with that.

Depends. We want the stockings to be good until they have their own family. A nickname as a toddler might not follow through to their teen years!

I think if you exclusively call him Xander (seems from HB you do!) you should get that. My actual name is Elizabeth but I go by Lisa and having a stocking with Elizabeth would be super weird to me and to everyone else, really. If he ever changes his mind and wants to go by something else, you can get a new stocking for him! no biggie.

@Adira: I'd just do Xander! It's what you call him! And when he's adult and has his own family, won't he want to get his own stockings?

@Adira: is the name embroidered? Couldnt it be removed later and you could have another name added if thats the case? I would go with what you call him.

@Adira: haha well i would go with embroidery over printing then, so it isn't permanent. Its not easy to remove (so google tells me) but its possible. Or you could always just replace his stocking later if it bothered him (although that would hurt my type-a self because i want the stockings to match haha).

I'd go with NN - I actually have this problem with DH. He goes by a NN, J calls him 'Da'.
I should probably just order plain ones for us! haha

I would go with Xander. I think it's unlikely that one day he'll want a completely different nickname. And it's not a babyish nickname. For example, DH's name is Matthew and as a child everyone called him Matty. I would think it was silly to put Matty on a kid's stocking because it's obviously babyish. But Xander seems like a name he could use his entire life.

Out of curiosity why did you choose to name him Alexander instead of just Xander?
