"No-makeup" makeup. What products/brands do you use?

Most times I wear no makeup but when I do, I go for just some highlight on my cheeks and a bit of mascara at best. I have quite a few things that I carry around, but my lifestyle is such that I have no time to make sure all of the products maintain its form on my face. The makeup process is becoming more and more elaborate. I was watching a tutorial on simple makeup and the girl took 30 minutes to get her face ready. That was long. and then she also suggested doing your hair. And I was wondering how many things does this girl get done in her day. That is just too much time.

@periwinklebee: sorry I'm late in replying! I use it when I want to even out my skin tone but don't want to do a lot of makeup. So basically when I'm going to work, a casual dinner, etc. (I mostly am a SAHM and don't wear makeup daily).
I use an oil as a moisturizer so I put that on and let it sit for awhile, then add the tinted moisturizer.
For what it's worth, when I first started buying it it was because I had a makeover done at a local shop. The woman who did it for me applied the tinted moisturizer with a foundation brush and it was amazing. Really remarkable coverage but in a very natural way. I have a cheap foundation brush and sometimes use it But I don't think I've ever been able to fully duplicate what she did (no idea if that's skill or the brush!)

@periwinklebee: I dont use TM but I use tinted moisturizer from another brand. I use my oil or lotion before the tinted moisturizer. I dont think I "have to" and I think it could take the place in a bind but my practice has been both.

FWIW - Beautycounter just launched a 5 minute face thing...where they are promoting a quick simple face in 5 minutes using 6 products. They have a bunch of videos on their youtube channel and on their website. The videos make it easy to re-create. Their on staff makeup artist leads one in patricular...she has a bunch of super models and celebs in her list of regular clients...so chick knows what she is doing and is great at giving tips tricks on how to apply.

(I am affiliated with them - but didnt post my link or anything here so I am hoping this is allowed? If not I can remove)

@Silva: Thanks, this is very helpful - I have the same issues replicating what the person in the store can do!

@Mrs D: I'd never heard of Beautycounter, will check it out. Thank you for sharing!

Question for those of you using highlighter (partially inspired by the blog post on NYX cosmetics)...what are you using? I bought a stick highlighter via Benefit, that Watts Up stick and I think I used it twice! I need to use it.

I put it on after my foundation but before my powder, is this right? I was putting a thin stripe above my cheekbone and a small dot on the tip of my nose and above my cupid's bow. Anywhere else?

@looch: it depends on your face shape. I have a square/wide face and add highlight to my chin to bring attention to the center of my face. You would avoid that if you have a long face.

@Raspberry: I have an oval shaped face.

No insight on highlights, but just popping back in to say that I've been very satisfied with Laura Mercier - great recommendation, thanks everyone! I've been using the tinted moisturizer, setting powder (makes my makeup look air brushed!), and primer (only for long days where I need something to keep the makeup in place). All great products!

i really like the balm's mary lou manizer. https://thebalm.com/products/man-681619700583?variant=16601887558 it has a bit of a shimmer but it will definitely be muted if you use powder after, and i like the effect a lot. i have a long/oval face so i usually put it on my upper cheekbones/temples and then i put a bit on the bridge of my nose. honestly i also often don't motivate to use it day-to-day but it makes a real difference, i should!

@looch: I don’t do it before powder because then the powder mattifies it and takes away the glowy effect. I do it as my last step in makeup.
I do it in a crescent from my brow bone down to the top of my cheekbone and blend in. I also do a strip down my nose and corners of my eyes. Sometimes in my Cupid’s Bow. I use Watt’s Up too. I like it.

@SweetiePie: Hrm, I need to experiment I think. The powder I use is a true yellow matte, I wonder if I need to switch the powder to something else. I got started using the yellow powder because the beige ones are always too pink, but maybe for the winter I don't really need to use it, especially if I buff the foundation in well.

@looch: I would use a translucent powder if I was you then. If you just want it for setting and no color or camouflage. They actually look white.

    I’ve heard good things about:
One Heck of a Blot by Soap & glory.
    By Terry’s hylauronic powder.
Makeup Forever Ultra HD microfinishing powder
    Estee Edit Flash Photo powder

I use Bobbi Brown Nude Finish Illuminating Powder and I don’t think it has any color to it at all, despite being a mosaic of things. Pic attached.

@SweetiePie: I am on the hunt for that Bobbi Brown powder, out of curiosity, what color is it and does it have any shimmer in any of the blocks? I want to try to get to a store this weekend, we'll see!

  17. SweetiePie

    honeydew / 7463 posts

@looch: Yes a bit of shimmer in the brick but I don’t see it on my face ever. I’ll take pic of the bottom so you can see label.
FYI I think today or tomorrow is last day for Sephora sale!

I went to a Bobbi Brown counter over the weekend and ended up getting a new foundation with a serum and the Nude version of the palette above. I can't believe how much brighter my skin looks with these two new products!

@SweetiePie: I love the powder! It's perfect for my skin and it really does give me that "glow" without being glittery.

I can see the beginnings of the bottom of the pan of my powder blush and I think I am going to try Hourglass, one of those Ambient blushes.

I use all natural products. My favorites are 100% Pure, RMS Beauty and Kjaer Weis. They are on the expensive side, but I only use a little bit, so it lasts a long time

I wear SeneGence's color correcting tinted moisturizer. It provides light coverage while evening out your skin tone to combat dark spots and redness. It also provides a mechanical sun shield. The fun thing about it also is that it's long lasting and contains their proprietary formulation of Seneplex which helps with anti-aging and cellular cell regrowth.

@looch: let me know how you like the blush! I alternate between the stila one that adjusts to your coloring, the Benefit Benetint in rose, and Ilia muti stick in Tenderly (though I hate it for lips just cheeks).

@looch: @SweetiePie: I bought the hourglass ambient blush at the sephora sale. I got basically the lightest one they had. Its a SUPER pale pink, but it goes on really well and its not too shimmery or in your face glowy. Its nice for winter (I have pale skin) but probably wouldn't show up much in summer on me. I'd recommend going into the store tho and trying them out.
I typically use Nars in orgasm and deep throat, as well as one bare minerals. But I like the formulation of the hourglass (i really like their ambient light palette too)

@Littlebit7: I added this to my wishlist!

I just realized that I started this and commented here and there but never shared in one post all of my no-makeup makeup!

For my primer I like Laura Mercier Radiance. It’s glowy and I like that it goes under my BB cream so it’s not glowy on top. If that makes sense. It comes from under.

BB Cream I use Peter Thomas Roth. It’s probably the most committed I’ve ever been to a cosmetic - I’ve repurchased 3-4 times and usually I like to keep trying new. I have tried a couple others and always return and go back to this. I just feel like it gives me the perfect amount of coverage without looking like I have full coverage. I can still see some of my imperfections but they are sort of muted? So I can wear just the B.B. Cream and feel like I’m covered enough to not be embarrassed, but still look natural. I really do want to try the Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer though. And I just added Jane iredale dream tint to my wishlist.

I use concealer and when I want a no-makeup makeup day I use glossier stretch concealer. It’s also sheer but buildable and doesn’t look like true concealer.

For no makeup cheeks I like Benetint in rose. I also dab that on my lips so they are a little rosier but still look bare. I’ve also liked Ilia multi-stick but it’s slightly less natural looking (since it’s more like a balm than a liquid)

I mentioned the Bobbi Brown shimmer brick already. I’ll just dab that over my cheeks and bridge of nose to set things a little but not “look” set.

Eyes I either leave totally alone or do one really light coat of Clinique glossy mascara. It’s not really thickening or lengthening or anything. Just adds a little color and shine.

For lips I’ll either just leave that benetint as is, maybe put a little aquaphor over it or glossier balmdotcom. If I forget to do that during my makeup routine (lips are relatively new for me) I keep a couple things in each purse - Vaseline rosy lips is awesome. And I like Fresh sugar lip treatment in rose. (Just now realizing my rose theme). I just got nude this morning for Christmas so I’ll try that out later.

@SweetiePie: ooo I want to try the peter Thomas Roth one. I use the Laura mercier (but to be honest it’s lasting power isn’t the best and sometimes I feel greasy)
I like the nars one more.

@Littlebit7: hmmmm good to know about the LM. I really like her primer which is why I thought it might pair really well with the moisturizer. But it’s good to hear real-life experience.
I do think I want to try the Jane Iredale next just because the online review I read of it was so spot on for what I like.
Do you read Into the Gloss? They have what they call #topshelfies where regular people can share their products and I love it because you hear about real experiences and you can also get a sense of their personality, skin type and lifestyle and how it would translate to yours. And I read about lots of products I wouldn’t have seen just from browsing Sephora.

@SweetiePie: Speaking of Fresh, they have a ton of masks I want to try...I am thinking of splurging on the Black Tea one.

I was just reading above about your routine and I remembered I also have a luminous primer...I stopped wearing it when I switched makeup to the summer formula and I didn't need it, but I know I still have a bit left. So, I want to use it up before I get another bottle of my fave Smashbox brand.

@looch: Oh yes, I got a sample of the Fresh Rose Face Mask (like a deluxe sample) and it’s awesome. Love love love it. I also have that and a TON of other masks on my wish list. Masking has become my new indulgence over the last year or so. It’s so easy to do in the evening while I’m tidying up or watching TV.

I also got the Peter Thomas Roth mask-a-holic set and I love rotating those. And caudalie also has some nice ones. I like the moisture mask.

I have the Kiehls calendula one on my wish list next and there’s a few more that are super expensive so I just daydream about them.

Based on this thread, I recently bought the Fresh Sugar Lip treatment in Rosé and I really love it! I always use Labello lip balm since I feel like my lips are constantly dry, and the Fresh keeps them super hydrated with a hint of color.

@runnerd: what do you use from maskcara? the concept seems interesting esp that you don't even really need foundation and you can do it for 5 minutes and it's all in 1 compact...

@SweetiePie: You inspired me to do a mini spa treatment last night...I did a double cleanse, an exfoliation with Decleor Aroma Cleanse, multi-masking with a charcoal mask in the t zone and a hydrating mask on my cheeks, then a spritz of essence to finish. I felt great.

I also got the catalog today from Ulta and they have a ton of things I want to try, so if the weather cooperates this weekend, I will take a trip and buy some more masks, I really want to try a sheet mask.

On the makeup front, I am thinking about adding in Marc Jacobs Dew Drops....does anyone use this? I watched The Frugalista (she's in her 40s, like me but wears makeup much better than I do, she wouldn't be considered a no makeup makeup person, but she has great products) and she was doing the Dew Drops under her foundation. I looked a bit online and they seem to be very gold, but I am dying to try them. That requires a trip to Sephora, though, maybe next week.

@lamariniere: I just saw this, so glad you like it! Yes it really is so hydrating for more of a “beauty” product.

@looch: Yay! I love doing a mini facial once a week. I’m still not sure how that will go when #2 arrives in a couple of months so I’ve been really getting them in as much as I can now!

I haven’t seen those Dew Drops yet. I use something maybe kinda similar? I use the Laura Mercier Radiance Bronze Primer when I feel like I need some extra color/glow. The regular Radiance primer is more pearly but the bronze is...well, bronze. 😄 I’ll need to watch the video you cited though to see if it is similar or not.
