Anatomy scan was today. Cervix looks good, which since I've been having bad dreams about pre-term labor is comforting. Movement is normal, growth is on track but not 100% normal. Very big head, small to average body/limbs. And something's wrong in the brain. Enlarged ventricles. The significance is pretty much unknown, but possible downs and spina bifida, or who knows? They said it's almost certainly not just nothing, but no way to know what yet. I'll see a maternal-fetal medicine specialist asap for a more detailed ultrasound. The kidneys were also a little enlarged, but they didn't seem as worried about that. Still sort of in shock, but trying to mostly focus on the "probably not fatal" part and not the "probably never going to be neurotypical" part.

@Torchwood: aww hugs. I know it must really suck to hear that things may not be normal. I hope the specialist will have good news for you. Did u have the nuchal scan done? If so, did results show anything?

My daughter had an echogenic focus in the heart or something which could be a marker for Down's syndrome, but she turned out not to have it. Hope everything comes out well for u too.

@Torchwood: I hope the specialist has good news for you! Did you have Any first tri screening? Did those results show anything?

    I'll be thinking of you!

@tequiero21: @Mrs. Jump Rope: Thanks. We didn't do any screenings, since we aren't high risk for anything (that we know of). Kinda regretting that now, but not sure it would have made a difference other than giving us more of a warning. We're apparently going to be talking to a genetic specialist at some point, but not sure when or what exactly for. And they drew some blood today to do some screenings of some sort, but didn't really explain whether it would just rule them out or what.

@Torchwood: at around 16 weeks or so, they take blood to look for spinal defects, i believe. Harmony test is still an option if u want to check for trisomies. People just do it earlier cuz they can. Supposedly 99% accurate.

  7. Torchwood

    pomelo / 5607 posts

@tequiero21: I expect from what they said that they'll recommend something. Harmony or amnio or whatever, not sure what.

Also, they never mentioned it but it says on my report that I have an anterior placenta. I thought that meant I wouldn't feel movement early? I think I felt some as early as 14 weeks, and by 16 it got pretty certain. Now (20w tomorrow) it's very definite. Though I never felt any sort of gentle "butterfly wings" type stuff, it's all been thumps and bumps. So maybe that's related?

I hope Chloe stays on board with having a little sister! She kisses my ultrasound pictures & this week she had a tea party with sissy. I'll spare you pictures but she was sticking fishie crackers in my belly button and pouring "tea" in it. I'm going to let her think baby's come from belly buttons for as long as I have to!

We had gone shopping one afternoon and she picked this out for sis:

@Mrs. Jump Rope: That's so adorable!

Question- We don't want to tell most people (i.e. anyone but our parents and DH's twin sister) anything about this until we know more. But because of my blog, a LOT of people know we had the anatomy scan yesterday. How would you answer any questions about how it went? I'm thinking something along the lines of not having all the results yet, but that could open up some more questions. I don't want to say anything about it being questionable, because I don't want to alarm people or get a ton of questions, but I also don't want to straight up lie and say it was fine. Any thoughts?

@Torchwood: Lots of people have to go in for additional screening because the baby wasn't cooperating or because they couldn't get the measurements they needed. Just say something like "No updates on the anatomy scan yet because we're not finished! They couldn't get all the images they wanted so we're going to another doctor with a better ultrasound machine."

@Torchwood: Wow that has got to be scary. You always expect to go into a scan like that expecting nothing but normal so it must have been a shock. I'm sorry you're in this limbo.
I hope that you can continue to focus on the good and get some answers from the additional testing and genetic counselor. And know that no matter what you'll love that baby and that baby will love you

I too was surprised when at my early anatomy this week they said "anterior placenta". Because I started to feel him moving this week and actually felt some of the movements we saw on the screen. And I'm only 17 weeks! Maybe there are varying "degrees" of anterior placenta? Maybe it can be partially anterior so you can still feel quite a bit? I know that I'm feeling him, it's quite obvious now.

Just feel like whining today. I'm 19 weeks and I already feel huge, especially compared to my last pregnancy, and I have gained a lot of weight in my face I'm just having a hard time imagining what the next 20-21 weeks will be like if I already feel so big so soon....

@Pancakes: sameish. My hips exploded this past week & my belly is huge. My mom commented that she can't imagine me double this size come August/September.

    Thanks.

@SweetiePie: I mentioned above that I had the same question. I'm feeling tons of movement, and have been for a while, but my results say anterior placenta. Not what I expected.

Okay, I'm over my pity party (for now!). Did y'all have a nice weekend? We had the ILs overnight and my parents drove up this morning and we all had breakfast and went to church together. The service was really nice but DD talked and squirmed through the whole service (she refuses to go to the nursery--that's a separate issue!). We had a really nice Easter lunch at our house; my dad grilled rack of lamb and I made a yummy mint pesto to go with it. It was nice hosting people in our space and my mom and MIL helped out a lot in the kitchen too, which was great. They all left after lunch, and then all 3 of us took a nap (!) and we had dinner and a mini egg hunt at a friend's house. So all in all a very nice weekend, but whew, I'm tired!

Hope you had a nice sunny weekend!

My hips exploded this week too! My belly is def bigger but it's my hips that are surprising. I started itching there like stretchmarks were brewing so DH has been on belly butter duty. Boobs hurt more this week and my lower back has been killing me.

Work was bananas Thursday and Friday and I was at work until 6pm last night! We had a nice Easter service today and we ate leftovers from Friday (we had an Easter themed dinner for Bible study and had ham, corn casserole, salad and veggies). We also grilled meat for this weeks meals, took a nap, and watched some playoff hockey. Had a nice date night at a Mexican joint and did our grocery shopping on the way home. Hanging out until bedtime now. Work is gonna be tough this week but looking forward to our anatomy scan on Thursday!

What are ya'll feeling BH-wise? I'm having way more than I expected this early. Not enough to be a cause for concern, I think, but definitely a lot more than I would have thought.

  21. Mrs. Jump Rope

    blogger / coconut / 8306 posts

@Torchwood: I've been feeling BH for a few weeks now. It seems to be directly related to dehydration so I'm making more of an effort to drink more.

I had two strong contractions last week that were painful enough it made me catch my breath. They were 33 minutes apart and I haven't had one since.

  22. Torchwood

    pomelo / 5607 posts

@Mrs. Jump Rope: Mine are almost all enough to catch my breath a bit, or at least the ones I notice are. I occasionally poke my belly and realize it's harder than usual, but don't feel anything, and I've wondered if those are just less strong ones. Nothing regular, and the ones I notice aren't more than 1 or 2 an hour (and not every hour), so I'm not worried. I was going to ask the midwife, but wound up not discussing anything but ultrasound results, unsurprisingly. When they call me with my MFM appointment, if it's a nurse calling instead of a receptionist, I may ask what's normal and what I should watch for. In the meantime, more water!

    pomelo / 5607 posts

FINALLY heard back about an appointment with MFM. Tentatively going in on May 2nd, but that's just their current next available. They're still hoping to be able to work us in sooner. So worst case we'll be able to move forward in a week and a half, and hopefully it'll be sooner.

  24. Pancakes

    nectarine / 2180 posts

@Torchwood: Glad you have an appointment, but I really hope they can work you in sooner!

I don't think I had any noticeable BH contractions with my 1st, and this time nothing yet, except once last week I had the dog out for a walk and I got sharp cramps across my abdomen (probably due to dehydration?), bad enough that I had to turn around and go home. Not sure if that is BH or not.

  25. tequiero21

    honeydew / 7968 posts

@Torchwood: glad they got u an appt, hope they can squeeze u in earlier!

I'm pretty sure I'm having my bh pretty early. Can't remember when I had it with the first, but it definitely wasn't this early. I was better about drinking water w my first tho. It's definitely correlated with my lack of drinking water.... I'm drinking more now and have had less bh.

So, had my anatomy scan today. How annoying. They tell me to drink four cups of water an hour before. Then don't see me until 2.5 hours after my appt. I was literally dying. So annoying how they make u do that. They don't even need really full bladder to see the cervix. Ridiculous.

    I haven't checked in a while so I thought I'd say hello!

Pregnancy has been pretty boring lately, with the exception of having back aches every morning because I can't find a comfortable sleeping position. Body pillow coming soon!

I felt the first recognizable thump in my belly last night while my husband was reading Harry Potter to the baby (we started re-reading the series this week when the baby started to hear). And today I've been noticing that all the little flips and pops and twinges I've been feeling but brushing off lately are most likely the baby moving. I'm looking forward to something very definitive though!

My belly popped out this week (I don't have a gold membership, so no belly pic for the thread), and people at church this weekend started to touch! I'm trying to come up with a really nice, sweet way to tell people NO. It's hard when your husband's a pastor like mine is, and I know that most of the ladies are just excited for us, but it is SO awkward and uncomfortable.

my anatomy scan is May 7 and fingers crossed we can stay team green! (E is paranoid they will slip during the u/s!)

In the meantime I'll stay distracted because my brother in law is getting married this weekend!

@Torchwood: I'm sorry you had so much unknown/concerning in your scan. Friends of mine warned that the anatomy scan can be really scary and discouraging and that most of the time it is nothing, so I'm hoping that is true for you and me!

  28. Mrs. Jump Rope

    blogger / coconut / 8306 posts

@Torchwood: I'm glad you were able to get an appointment date! Fingers crossed they'll get you in earlier.

@LatteLove: can you be honest and say you don't enjoy being touched? Or, as my principal would say (I went to Catholic school) "leave two feet for the Lord!"

@tequiero21: why did you drink water?! I didn't have to & tried to avoid liquids that morning and still peed twice while waiting for my 8:30am appt. did you find out what you're having or are you team green?

  29. tequiero21

    honeydew / 7968 posts

@Mrs. Jump Rope: I found out I'm having a boy with the harmony test, but she confirmed with boy parts.

I know! I'm not sure why they made me hold my pee. I only was in pain once in my life and that was for the transfer, which was worth it. This was not!

@LatteLove: too bad u can't wear a shirt that says do not touch. I think people should just learn not to invade other peoples space, but it's hard, especially when u r a pastors wife. They feel like it's their right to touch your belly.

@Torchwood: I'm sorry to hear you had some upsetting news in your anatomy scan, the uncertainty is so difficult to deal with. In my last pregnancy, I had a really bad scan where the tech said she saw amniotic bands (will cause at least disability/malformation and at worst death) and had to wait several weeks for the next scan with the specialist, those weeks of waiting were horrendous. Thankfully the original tech was mistaken and the baby was fine but I still remember the stress of not knowing. We're all thinking of you.

We embarked on a big DIY project over Easter weekend, we (and by we I mean DH) dug out most of the back garden and the old 1970's crazy paving patio, we've put cement down and will put in a new wooden deck next weekend. I might even splurge on some stylish new outdoor seating...

Unfortunately for DH I seem to get a crazy strong nesting instinct when pregnant, I have a long list of other projects to get done, ranging from all those niggling little unfinished bits every house has to stripping the paint off the front exterior.

Anyone else go a bit overboard on nesting?

my biggest accomplishement yesterday was making pasta salad and not throwing up. it's one of my favorite summer time foods, but i had the worst aversion with it when i was pregnant with chloe. so bad that i haven't made it since I was pregnant with her!

but it was yummy & now i can't stop eating it.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: yummmmm! Pasta salad sounds so good right now.

@London Mama: Sounds productive! Now that our nursery is finally empty we're just waiting to find out what we're having so we can start buying everything! 8 more days.

@LatteLove: I don't know how you do it...I would be so weirded out with people touching me! I can barely tolerate our families doing it. My initial reaction is to jump back or swat away their hand

Hi everyone! Hope everyone had a relaxing weekend and a happy Easter (if you celebrate!)

@mrs. Jump rope and @pancakes I hope you are both doing okay, those sound like really scary experiences.

@torchwood I'm glad you have a follow up appointment, I hope you can get an earlier appointment! Waiting must be very difficult.

@lattelove I don't know how you deal with people touching you! My mom visited this weekend and she asked if she could touch it (which obviously she can haha).

  35. psw27

    pomelo / 5220 posts

Also, not sure if anyone else has been having this but at night my uterus gets super, super hard and I can feel it sticking out of my skin -- are these BH? It doesn't hurt really, just feels very hard and kind of tight. Should I be worried? It is usually only when I first lay down for the night. I have a doc appt on Friday so I plan to ask then, but I didn't know if this was cause for immediate concern. I don't think it happens during the day, at least not where I notice it.

Also, how worried should I be about sleeping on my back? I try to sleep on my sides but usually I wake up in the morning and I am on my back cause my hips get too stiff if I stay on them all night.

  36. gingerbebe

    cantaloupe / 6131 posts

@LatteLove: Ugh, my DH said our landlord came by last Friday and when he asked how he could help her, she said "oh I came by to see how your wife was doing and touch her belly." Even DH was weirded out by that. Thankfully I wasn't home, but people are so weird.

@psw27: I've been sleeping on my side with a pillow between my legs - that seems to help the hip/back soreness. If I sleep on my back, I put the pillow under my knees - somehow that feels better to me. I thrash around a lot since getting pregnant, so I end up wherever I end up in the morning, but I always try to fall asleep on my left side.

  37. psw27

    pomelo / 5220 posts

@gingerbebe I'm kind of the same. I start out on left with pillow between knees and then it becomes mayhem by the morning! Lots of thrashing (poor DH) and tossing about.

  38. tequiero21

    honeydew / 7968 posts

@psw27: sounds like bh. Are u drinking enough water? Doesn't sound like contractions or anything since u don't get them often. I say drink more water and see if that helps. It helps me.

  39. gingerbebe

    cantaloupe / 6131 posts

@tequiero21: I can't believe so many of you are struggling to drink enough water. I swear, I have a panic attack if I walk 30 feet without my water bottle with me because I'm so thirsty all the time. DH says I'm flying through our 5-gallon bottles and he will have to go buy more before our next water delivery because I'm becoming a water buffalo!

  40. tequiero21

    honeydew / 7968 posts

@gingerbebe: u are borderline diabetic, right? Not diabetic, but prone to it cuz of family history or something? Maybe it's related? My brother in law was the same. Drank all.the.TIME!!! He was always thirsty. Turns out he has diabetes and needs to regulate it with pills. But he was extreme, really didn't take care of himself. He was always thirsty but instead of water, he drank bad fruit drinks. Like fruit punch. My husband thought it was really weird that he was always thirsty, so he told my bil to get checked out and yup, my hubby was right.

Seriously though, in the beginning, water tasted BAD to me. It's better now, but still have to chug to drink it. Wasn't this bad with my first pregnancy.
