We do $20 in a Christmas card every year, and continue to get great service from our mailman so I think that works!

@hellobeeboston: We do $20 here in a Philly suburb, so I think that's totally reasonable. We also have had the same mailman for the entire time we've been here (7 years), and we're pretty friendly with him. I think that's perfect.

Do you tip your garbage/recycling men? It's harder to do for us, because they essentially drive up to our toter, and a machine on the side picks it up and dumps it for them. So there's no real reason for them to get out of the truck unless there's a bulk item there. Recycling is the same way.

@hellobeeboston: Eep...sorry! We used to have guys that came and physically took it and put it in the truck too. So we would always tape it. Last year it remained taped to the toter, and we realized they got new trucks with the lift. So there went that!

We do the same as @yoursilverlining: and I also have a box of snacks and bottles of water for them to use during this busy season.

I think it's technically illegal to give postal workers cash? I thought I remembered reading that somewhere once. And also that a gift can't have greater than $20 value. I coudl be totally making that up, though.

That being said, we gifted our mailman a $15 Fandango gift card in a holiday card.

We don't do anything for the garbage collectors. I have no idea how many guys are on those trucks and they have the mechanical lifter/dumper thing.

@littlebug: yeah I read the same thing- they can't accept cash. That's why I figured a small gift card to Dunkin' Donuts- and those are on every corner around here.
