Yes, using tobacco products at work. What would you do? Ignore it? Mention it to him? Mention it to someone else?

I'd ignore it, unless he was doing it in front of clients or customers. Then I might mention it to him, or just ignore it and wait for the boss to find out on his own.

@.twist.: Gross. It's like..tobacco grounds that you hold in your mouth between your gums and lips, for up to half an hour. You produce a lot of tobacco saliva which is usually spit out. Gross. Does horrible things to your mouth.

Chewing tobacco that is spat into a cup. Its a gross especially if a person uses a can or cup and brown stuff os visible.
I have sat in meetingd with clients doing it. I usually make some kind of comment and people remove the dip entirely. I dont comment to make them stop dipping, but I guess they dont like the attention.

So gross! I dated a guy who dipped who had spit cups everywhere!
I would ignore it and hope the boss notices!

Lots of people in investment banking dip into Snapple bottles... so gross.
pomegranate / 3204 posts
I guess I am just used to it, it doesn't bother me as long as they are discreet about it and keep it out of their teeth. My DH dips and I hate it, but I have accepted it.

@autumnlove: ....I'm his boss..............LOL

@mediagirl: Does your company have any policies around smoking/tobacco use?
pomegranate / 3204 posts
@mediagirl: Oh I didn't realize YOU were the boss lol. I would definitely say something especially if its against policy.
hostess / wonderful watermelon / 39513 posts
@mediagirl: LOL, does your company have an employee handbook? Maybe send him an excerpt if there is a section about tobacco and alcohol on the job? Yikes...good luck!
cantaloupe / 6800 posts
@mediagirl: Do you mean dip, or chew? I know a lot of people get them confused. The first picture is dip, and the second is chew. If you company doesn't allow it I would absolutley say something!
@FutureMrsMcK: It's only gross if you are gross about it. Normal people are quiet about it lol. It's gross when people are spitting on the ground, or spitting loud, etc. I actually have dipped about 1/2 a can a day since I was 12.
Either way, I wouldn't say anything at my job. A LOT of people dip around here, unfortunately the people I work with are big smokers, so they just step out back. If they sat at their desk & dipped I wouldn't care or say anything. We don't get customers and we're a pretty laid-back office.

@MrsTiz: Sorry, I didn't mean to offend! Everyone I've ever known who's dipped (or chewed) has been super gross about it.
persimmon / 1427 posts
I have a coworker that does this and its disgusting. He thinks he's being discrete, but everyone knows and its just gross.
I ignore it. Its disgusting, but its not offensive or negatively impacting me, so I don't feel the need to discuss it with him or anyone else.
cantaloupe / 6800 posts
@FutureMrsMcK: No, you didn't offend me! I know it's unattractive & is very easy to be gross with. I quit just before TTC..DH is thrilled lol!

@autumnlove: I don't know, I just Google'd it and those pictures came up haha!

It is against our company policy to use any tobacco products outside of designated areas. We recently had to crack down on chew/dip because there were remnants in the drinking fountains. Now it is only allowed in areas where smoking is allowed.
coconut / 8472 posts
I don't think it's professional to be doing that in an office. Even if he doesn't meet with clients, he still has to have some level of interaction with co-workers.
As the boss, I think it's your responsibility to tell him to stop.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
Well, i guess it depends if it's legal or not at your company and if you have any grounds to tell him that he can't use them. At my company, there is no tobacco use on campus, so it'd be an issue.
Lots of my coworkers have gross habits, but I wouldn't say anything unless it wasn't allowed.
pomegranate / 3329 posts
I did not know there was a difference between dipping and chewing. It's something that almost every guy does here, and I know a few girls who do it as well. My husband "dips" I guess, and I hate it. I've learned to accept it, but I wish he'd quit (again).
If you have a policy against tobacco use then I would say something, if it's offending co-workers or clients I would also say something.

I would be horrified! I work in a dental clinic though. That would definitely never fly!!
grapefruit / 4187 posts
Considering the fact that I almost complained about my coworker who blows her nose all day long at her desk (especially during lunch), I would definitely say something about this.
grapefruit / 4187 posts
Oh, but to answer your question, I would say something to my boss. I would never confront the person directly since that is our boss's job.
hostess / papaya / 10540 posts
@MrsTiz: Im happy to hear you quit! We know a guy who was still pretty young that developed horrible mouth cancer because of it.
@mediagirl: What's your company's policy about tobacco use? If it's not allowed then of course you have to say something. But if it's allowed you can't so anything about it.
pear / 1664 posts
I'd ignore it unless it was directly affecting me. None of my business, I figure.
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@mrbee: @mrsaudi: @autumnlove: @boogs: unfortunately, we have a "no smoking in the building" policy but nothing about general tobacco use.
persimmon / 1087 posts
@mediagirl: Can you ask HR about whether or not you can say something to him about it?
hostess / wonderful persimmon / 25556 posts
@calsmom: we don't really have a HR person.... I think I'm just going to ignore it unless someone complains about it to me. I just think it's so weird that he would dip at work. He quit smoking and started dipping - because it's better for him.
persimmon / 1087 posts
@mediagirl: That's not a good position to be in! I would be offended by it, but I am anti anything tobacco related. I hope that someone complains about it!
nectarine / 2886 posts
@mrbee: Yep, I used to work in banking and so many guys would chew in the office. Didn't bother me.
coffee bean / 48 posts
I think I would treat it like gum. If he's customer facing and affecting that aspect, then address it. Or if it's a hygiene issue like he is spitting non-stop, then address it. Otherwise it's a personal thing. I've worked with many Swedes who liked Snuff, but they were super discreet and cleanly about it. (One time I asked to try one, and I threw up)
admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts
@betsyboop: It's pretty nasty when people take those huge chaws out of their mouths while you're talking to them!
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
Yuck. Our old office had rules against tobacco & alcohol use in the building, so I'm sure dipping/chewing would've been against the rules.
GOLD / wonderful coffee bean / 18478 posts
@mrbee: yes, true. They come into meetings with their bottles and I just want to puke.
admin / wonderful grape / 20724 posts
@Andrea: Yup back in the day, everyone would spit into their Snapple containers. At first I thought everyone just loved Snapple haha!
