OMG, my post totally screwed up on my I phone. LOL. I meant to say, "I love this book program!". We did it as community outreach to younger siblings when I was an elementary librarian.

There's so much research to show that 1000 before K is so important to early literacy.

I am not in the majority, but I would not do this even if our local library offered it (I have no idea if it does or not). I do not need another thing to keep track of and feel bad about not being able to accomplish. I think fostering an environment conducive to reading is important, but just to say you "read" a certain number of books before Kindy? No thanks.

@honeybear: You are right, but you would be surprised at how many kids in our country (I live in the US) have 0 access to books. In a certain class/education level, reading to your child is totally normal and something we do every day, but I had *many* students in kinder when I was an elementary librarian who had never had a book in their lives-no library books and no personal books.

I worked in a 99% low income school where the student population was almost all English language learners, so I don't know if the issue was the expense of buying books, the time to get to the library when parents are working jobs with long hours, or the fact that the parents couldn't read books in English anyway and most books here are in English--or a combination of all three, but it was heartbreaking and I LOVED the 1000 books program for that reason.

Our program gave small prizes for each level completed, so it didn't matter if a kid/parents got to 1000--the philosophy was that 10 or 100 or 500 is way better than 0.

And it's amazing what giving away a free book bag or having an event with Clifford the Big Red Dog will do for getting parents into the library.

ETA: oh, and we had a great bilingual/spanish kids book section because of our student population, so that was a hit, too.

i don't know if our library does it. i feel like we read to LO enough and i'm hesitant to put a number on it as i tend to stress about benchmarks like that, so no 1000 books for us!

@Anagram: I sincerely wish I could change careers! I get such envy every time you post! I love kids, I love books, I am passionate about literacy! Ugh! Why didn't I realize this sooner!

@Cole: that's awesome that you will start with book 1!

@Anagram: I know! And publishing was actually what I first pursued after college. My mom is actually a retired librarian, but she did acquisitions and never worked with kids.

If you can do the same books I probably have done this as I read to DS since he was in womb and every night since he was born so at almost 4 with at least one book a night (and usually its more than one) he most be close if not over 1000 right? DD sadly probably hasnt gotten as many because as a second child its harder I admit but I will make it my goal to do this now with her too. I need to get that app
