Lately, every time we put Xander (10 months) into his high chair to eat, he just starts crying uncontrollably! He'll usually still eat - he just sobs the entire time! Big fat tears rolling down his face, but he still opens his mouth and eats food (purees only). WTF is going on???

@lepamplemousse: Would teething cause this response? Especially because he's just eating purees and doesn't actually have to chew anything?? But he has been extra fussy lately in general, so maybe that's what it is... I don't know!

Does he cry if you feed him somewhere else like a booster or regular chair?

Maybe he was busy doing something when you strapped him in.

Mine cries when he has teeth coming in, even purees. I think maybe it's actually soothing, so the second the food is swallowed he wants more so immediately that he cries Either that or theres a toy he sees from a distance that he wants lol.

It sounds like he doesn't like the high chair. Try a booster seat or stroller or somewhere else and see if that helps.

@winniebee: Well... I don't have anything else to feed him in at home, so I'm not sure. He doesn't cry when I feed him when we're out at a restaurant, but that could be because it's a different setting...
@Dandelion: Hmmm... I don't know. I feel like I've gotten to him at many different times - sometimes he's being fussy because I think he's hungry, sometimes he's playing, sometimes he's just taking a break and having some water... I don't get it!
@pinkcupcake: That's kind of what I'm thinking! But should I just continue feeding him like that? I want him to know that we eat at the table and in his chair... I shouldn't just give in to his crying if that's really the problem, right??
@knittylady: Oh, hmm... maybe it is teething?? I did notice the other day that if I was shoveling the food in fast enough, he didn't seem to be crying as much! But other times, he's crying so hard, he's refusing to eat!
@cmomma17: Yes, pretty much! Although it's not always immediately... sometimes I'll give him puffs and he plays with them for a bit, and then when I start to feed him, he'll start crying, even though he eats everything I give him!

@Adira: R will cry when teething and if the spoon hits her bottom gums. Try tomorrow, him sitting in your lap and see if that helps. Could you try not strapping him in as well? Maybe something feels tight or is pinching him?

@Adira: We are bad, we never strap R in. I worry about her choking and then can't get her out fast enough.

@Smurfette: I don't blame you! Xander isn't eating any finger foods yet, so I haven't worried about choking.

@winniebee: I was going to say the same thing! @Adira: Maybe he would do better with some finger foods? Something soft, that you feel comfortable with... maybe he wants some control in how he's eating? Hope it gets easier for you soon, it must be stressful!

@winniebee: @travelgirl1: I offer him puffs before I give him purees, but he usually just throws them on the floor!

@Adira: Maybe try something else like steamed veggies or something with lots of colour in it? I know with A, she wouldn't entertain purees at all but once she got control and was able to pick what to put in her mouth and do it herself there was no stopping her. Still a lot of chucking it on the floor though, lol, sigh.

@Adira: Try bananas. R will not eat purées or other food some days but she always will eat her banana.

@Adira: it was around this age when T wanted nothing to do with purées. You could try avacados or other soft stuff. Another big hit in the early days of table food was elbow macaroni and the contents of soup (soft carrots, celery, potato, noodles).

no advice, but poor xander! just imagining him crying while eating makes me so sad.

My LO wanted nothing to do with being strapped in or purées at that age. He wanted to feed himself
