We just have one, but have thought about two. We fostered a dog and it made me think I want to stick to being a one dog household. Our dog is perfect with dogs outside of the home, but she was anxious about another dog taking her place inside our home. She became pushy. I also found 2 big dogs in our home to be a lot. We live in a small rental house, and they were always underfoot. The fur, oh, the fur! And they would constantly play with each other, even if it was just laying on their sides and mouth-sparring. If we had a bigger home and our girl was a little older/mellower, I would still consider it.

Here are some thoughts for you!

1. Is it another boy or a girl? People say that it can be easier to have a mix, but I know some homes that have both of the same and it is fine.

2. Your boy is still pretty young--has he mellowed out? It might be a lot to handle. On the other hand, you are still fresh with puppy raising, so you're well prepared!

3. Cost. Obvious, but a definite consideration. Puppies cost a lot with vet care right up front, and then you're doubling food prices, etc.

4. Care--arranging care for one dog is not too hard, but it adds up and is tougher when you have two.

I think it would be great to have a second dog so our girl would have a companion, but really, I think she prefers having all our attention to herself. I have heard that having an older dog makes raising your next puppy easier as they can show the pup the ropes.

I have another thing to add When another dog is around, I have found that my dog just wants to focus on the other dog. She becomes very doggy, and when we had our foster, I felt like I missed her! She didn't even want to sleep with us in our bedroom anymore, but shared a bed with the foster dog in the living room. I could no longer pull her up on the couch and cuddle with just her. If your dog is more aloof around other dogs or is already independent, this wouldn't be an issue for you. But I'm used to my dog being more of a velcro dog, and I missed having her by my side.

We have 2! It's great, because they keep each other company during the day while we're gone. There's less separation anxiety. It's also so neat to watch them wrestle and fight with each other. Dogs are pack animals, so the more the merrier...especially at that age!

We have two and I find very little difference. We have small dogs though, so I can imagine some extra work with two large dogs.

The main "problems" with two for us are calming them both down when people come over, or delivery man knocks at door, feel more guilty asking someone to dog sit for us, and increased vet bills. Otherwise, I love having two!

the younger one was potty trained in no time and they got along great from the start and it was easy to add one more. that being said, we have smaller dogs. a 17lb beagle terrier and a 12 lb yorkie. not sure the transition would have been as smooth with two bigger dogs sinc ei was still in an apt when we got them!

i will also say that if we had not gotten our two dogs before LO, we would only have stayed at one!

Well shoot, a dog that cute you should DEFINITELY get! Up until last spring we had two dogs and it was great. I loved that they had a built in playmate. They were best friends and so fantastic together. However, I will say that two dogs (esp largish dogs) are expensive! Lots of food costs, vet bills (and they were super healthy - just the cost of shots alone was crazy) and the cost to board two when we traveled was rough. Are you TTC now? We have adjusted to life with one dog now and in a way are grateful since we have two babies coming soon. I think someday I want to have a second dog again, but once we've adjusted to having babies in our life too!

We just adopted our second dog.

We knew two dogs meant more food but luckily we got both dogs to eat the same food.

Our first dog is a medium dog 49 lbs and second dog is 25 lbs. There is quite a size difference and I'm still worried about our first dog trampling over our new dog. Our second dog is a little smarter where he will hang back when my first dog gets very excited when I come home. My first dog goes a little nuts when I come home.

My first dog is a 7 years old female dog and our second dog is a 4 year old boy. Both are fixed but it's definitely different having to get our new dog to stop humping our first dog. It did give us a good laugh seeing it. My first dog is able to take care of herself and sits her butt down when he is in one of those moods.

There is jealousy. Vet said its normal and should go away. I think the first week, my first dog was trying to get extra attention and plus I think she was a bit depressed at times.

Walking two dogs on a leash is a total pain. Especially since we live in an apartment where they have to be walked. Well, our lease was up in Feb so we are actually moving into a house with a fenced yard. Yay! Moving this week! I'm counting down the days til I no longer have to walk them. Oh, we now take them out for walks separately. My first dog takes a long time to do her thing. My second dog is really quick. Plus my first dog pulls a lot.

I love having two dogs. I definitely keep seeing how different the dogs are.

Oh, my first dog is very attached to me and the second dog is attached to my husband. It's just so cute.

Oh, at the shelter, we had our dog meet the new dog. No aggression was seen. My first dog was pretty much indifferent to the second dog. Which was good.

The first three weeks, the new dog definitely bugged the crap out of our first dog. My first dog is really mellow and the smaller dog has a bit more energy.

Oh, here is a photo from the first weekend we got them. The look on my first dog ( the bigger one) pretty much explains how my first dog thought of the new dog.

Lastly, if you let your dog sleep on the bed, be prepared to lose your spot when you get up.

Since we are moving, we found a great excuse to finally get that king size bed.

We have one. I would like two.... But we take our dog everywhere and its just too much to have a baby, toddler, and two dogs at restaurants, festivals, etc. Maybe when the girls get older.....

@bluestriped bee: that sounds like a great place! I love where we go because they let them share a kennel at night and charge us half for the little dog. They love the people that run the place so I don't feel bad leaving them.

Our two are BEST buds. Both rescues and totally different backgrounds, but they bonded and are total lovies. They squish into the same bed to sleep together at night. We felt like our first was a bit lonely when we moved into a bigger house, and like that there's another bud home with him. We have a boy and a girl. Yes, it can be louder and more barky when someone comes over/someone rings the doorbell, but I love that we have two.

We love having two! They are both still VERY loving to us (noticed other posters said that was a negative) but they also love playing together. Ours have a 4 year age difference and are opposite sex. Main con is finding dog sitters when we go out of town and vet bills, but the pro of them having a play mate all the time outweighs that for us!

@MrsBrewer: I have so much I can say on this subject! But sickly I'll say that 2 dogs is not double the work.. When you feed one you feed both, when you walk one you walk both. Once the puppy is house trained its wonderful. We feel less guilty when we're not devoting 100% attention to the dog. And when we are at work. They cuddle and play and it is wonderful!!

This thread is making me want to get a second dog, but my dog is not a huge fan of other dogs... he'd rather play with their owners

Adding a second dog to our family was one of the best decisions we ever made. They play together, they keep each other company when we're out or when I'm too busy with the baby to play with them. They cuddle together, they lick each other's faces (it's like they're kissing!). They're best friends! Do it!!

We want another one, but we don't have the space yet. Our pup loves other dogs, and I can't wait to get her a playmate. I would go for it if you can afford the food and vet bills. And he is so, so cute!
