My LO is 9.5 months old and all of a sudden his tongue seems too for his mouth. I know a lot of babies do this, but is it normal for it to suddenly start? This has been going on for a few days.

When I worked at a preschool years ago my kids started at around 10 months old. One started sticking her tongue out a la Miley Cyrus and then the other kids started catching on. It was all I could do to keep the drool in check. Where the first one got it from, who knows, but the rest thought it was the coolest thing ever. It was cute in the beginning but I had to break that habit.

My younger sister's tongue did not stay in her mouth until she was older. She was/is a tongue thruster. She ended up having lots of orthodontic work, but that isn't because she is a tongue thruster.

@Mrs.Panda: oh you mean they did it on purpose? Haha! I definitely don't think my son is doing this intentionally.

@singingbee: interesting! do you know if the tongue thrusting suddenly began at some point, or if she did it from the beginning?

@MoonMoon: almost from the beginning. We have most of her baby pictures with her tongue hanging out.

@singingbee: aw that's cute! That seems to be the norm. I wonder what it means when it suddenly begins out of nowhere?..

I recently had my son's tongue checked by a pediatric ENT because it is out so often that our pediatrician was worried it might be too big for his mouth. Turns out, his tongue is perfectly normal. The ENT assured me that some babies just use their tongues to explore the world. He also does it when he is concentrating.
In other words, it's just babies being babies!

@MoonMoon: my son did that around that age as well, it definitely was intentional though

@MoonMoon: I'm not sure that the first one did it on purpose, but the others sure did. The first one I think just... did it.

@rahlyrah: that is reassuring, thank you! I'm extra paranoid right now, because LO's head measured big at his check up and they're sending us for a head ultrasound this week. Now I fear every little thing is a sign of trouble!

@Pumuckl: @Mrs.Panda: so funny to picture little babies making faces on purpose! I can't believe he's at that age already...I'll feel a lot better when my LO is choosing to stick his tongue out, instead of how it is now!

@MoonMoon: maybe you can talk to the doctor about low muscle tone in his upper body or jaw? I know that sometimes causes LO's to stick their tongues out. When he sits down on the ground does he form a "W" with his legs?

@Mrs.Panda: I will ask about muscle tone, thank you! He doesn't seem to be making a W when he sits...

@MoonMoon: well that's good! Just keep an eye on it as they make the W to reduce pressure on their back and it's kind of a "lazier" way to sit if that makes sense. I'm sure your LO is just tasting the world

our therapist also told us sticking out the tongue could be a sign of low muscle tone. olive used to do it around that age but she grew out of it.

@MoonMoon: maybe in the meantime you can do some exercises with him in case it is low muscle tone? Like guiding him to move his tongue to one side or the other, lifting toys above his head, things like that.

Did your LO just cut a new tooth? Mine started sticking her tongue out ever since she got her new teeth. I think she likes feeling them on her tongue.

@Mrs. Bee: I'm glad it's something they grow out of!
@Grace: yes, he just cut his first 2 teeth 2 weeks ago, ah that's reassuring!
