Have you discovered any place online that seems to be a safe place to discuss religion? I feel like I have so many questions, but I don't know where to go to ask them.

@HolisticMama: That's a tricky one. I try to limit that kind of discussion to one on one chats because in a large group, it usually gets heated.

I *think* if you word your post right, and make it clear that it's a religious discussion and not a debate and non-religious people need not apply, you could make a post like that here. *shrugs*.

I have not. Most of the time it seems like people are just trying to convince other people about their own views...doesn't mean you shouldn't/couldn't try here!

I'm up for any kind of religious discussion. my degree is in religious studies though, so I'm into anything and everything.

I'm scared to try here or anywhere. LOL.
I posted on my facebook asking for different types of religious texts that people recommended and it became a brawl. Haha.
Although it did occur to me that it doesn't seem that all religions want to arm wrestle over me. I thought surely I could get nearly all religious texts for free (because it's SUPER easy to get a Bible), but that's not actually the case. I thought that was quite interesting.

@Dagny: So what kind of religions do you cover in religious studies?

I think a post here is possible but would need careful and constant monitoring... Or reponsese limited to people actually answering the question only. But I agree it's scary to have online discussions about heated topics!

If you're trying to figure out where you fit in, there's a fairly interesting quiz on Beliefnet. It sounds silly, but it's neat.

@snowjewelz: Yeah, someone commented on my Facebook question: " in my opinion--EVERYTHING you need is inside the Word of God" and all bets were off.

I agree with others that you could probably start a post here so long as it's informative and not a place for debate or conversion and that is clearly stated in the original post.
I'm not sure what kind of religion you're interested in exploring or if you're just curious about religion in general, but I have a degree in Biblical Studies (and one in Speech-Language Pathology for more practical purposes... I double majored because Biblical Studies is an interest of mine) and can answer questions related to the Bible or Christianity. You're welcome to wall me if you'd like.

@HOLISTICMAMA - I studied all different religions but focused on east and south Asian (various forms of Buddhism and Hinduism), but my personal back ground is Judeo-Christian. What type of text/book recommendations are you looking for? Specific religions? Or more general books covering multiple religions?
It is unfortunate to not be able to feel safe when discussing religion and spirituality - I'm really sorry you got some discouraging responses. It really makes me sad because discussing religion and getting other's perspectives can be such a wonderful way to grow.

Feel free to wall me I am very open and don't judge :))))))

Internet monk is my favorite Christian site. Really good for those struggling to fit into a traditional church setting and especially good for those burned by the baptist church (as a baptist I can say that without being a jerk!)

@loveisstrange: Wow. The questions on that quiz are surprisingly difficult and thought provoking.

There was a hospital chaplain that I met who would do Christian services for individuals and after chatting with him, I discovered that he was Buddhist. I thought that was so interesting.

@Dagny: @coopsmama: oooo I'd love to hear suggestions from both of you on more theology-based religion books (vs inspirational/evangelical) - I've been all about learning history behind specially christianity this year, but also any world religion stuff would be cool too

@Dagny: me too!
I don't have any great recommendations off the top of my head, but are you looking for spiritual inspiration, or learning more about different religions?

I'd be interested in a book rec as well, more of like a history of world religions. I have tried searching, but my key words probably aren't specific enough.

Do you mean one religion specifically, or just religion in general?
If your looking for something general, I also recommend beliefnet.
If you are looking to learn something about an individual religion, I would suggest first trying to read the texts of that specific religion. Unfortunately, especially online, you get people who don't properly represent the religion they claim to be a part of.
