I probably will win the award for most random post of the day.
I'm trying to think of gifts for my parents for Christmas. They are taking an African safari next year.
If you have been on one....what do you need?

Are they good with a camera? You could hire them a photography tutor to help them learn how to shoot manual... Bee did that last year, and it really helped her photography!

@mrbee: Ooh yeah! I Know our local REI actually teaches weekend workshops on photography for travel (for beginners using a point and shoot, usually). I wonder if there's something like that out there, at an adult ed center or something?

A coupon to make a photo book after it?
Also, I was just telling someone at work to take either nice ear plugs or noise cancelling headphones. My IL's went to Africa 3 years ago and my FIL had the hardest time sleeping because he said the "sounds of the African wilderness at night was traumatizing". Not sure if they are doing the camping thing (or high end camping) but its a thought.

I was going to suggest binoculars as well - they're a must have! You could also get them a guidebook for the countries they're going to that include pictures and information about the different animals they'll be seeing (disclaimer: I'm a pretty big nerd so I loved reading about the history and other things to see there in addition to the animal facts).
You could also make them a 'survival kit' that includes insect repellent with Deet, sunscreen, water purification tablets (or a purifying wand, I think it uses UV light to kill all microorganisms in the water and is very handy to have), mini flashlights, batteries, rain coats (if they don't already have them), quick dry towels if they're going to be camping at all. Hmm, I'm trying to think what else they'll need....
I'd probably go with binoculars though!

I like Ree723's idea - you could package it in a nice Land's End tote bag: http://www.landsend.com/ix/luggage/Luggage/tote-bags/index.html?catNumbers=2431~2443&visible=1~2~1
I also really enjoy reading fictional books set in places I'm about to travel to. I don't have a recommendation for you off the top of my head though
