We let DD have a soft muslin blanket from about 13-15 months but took it away after reading the same article. We just have her sleep in long-sleeve pajamas and she seems fine.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: in the winter our kids bedrooms are chilly -about 63 degrees

When they were little they slept in cotton long sleeve pjs and a fleece long sleeve pj on top - it was perfect!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: As a sleep aid? I never thought of them like that, I used them for warmth only.

They have ones that have openings for the feet, so they can move around easily and stand with no issues.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I do still put on pajamas underneath every night, but you probably don't have to.

@travellingbee: Ditto here. My kid is 4 now and even now, she won't stay under a blanket. She sleeps in long PJs and socks all year long.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: even though they feel cool to the touch, it doesn't mean that they actually feel cold. My daughter is exactly how you're describing, and any time I've tried to put anything warmer on her, she's very uncomfortable. If the room is at 75 and you have long PJs and socks on, I bet you LO is perfectly comfortable. Kids tend to run warmer temp-wise, too.

We use the sleep sacks from Vaenait Baby (it's a Korean brand with a store on eBay). Their sacks have feet holes so kids can easily walk in them. We have them in every weight, from an ultra thin cotton for summer to a thicker sweatshirt weight cotton to fleece. We bought them bigger than necessary, mostly so that the legs would cover our sons' feet in the bed, so they last a long time.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: My 3 year old still doesn't use a blanket at night and we keep our rooms cold. We have always done long sleeved/pants cotton sleepers and socks and haven't had any issues. Sometimes his hands are cold when he wakes up but the rest of him is warm!

My almost 12 month old has slept in a fleece sleeper every night of her life - even during the hot summer that we are having! But we always have air conditioning on and the ceiling fan in her room constantly moves the air. So long sleeve, footed fleece it is!

My child runs warm and always kicks the blankets off anyway. So I would just use a fleece footie pajama and put him in the crib. But if your child does not run warm then I would consider a sleep sack. We never used those.

My son is 3.5 and still kicks off the blankets more than half the time.

Last winter (from about 11 - 16 months) we put DD to bed in cotton pajamas - pants and a long-sleeved tee - plus socks, with a footed fleece sleeper on top.

We have been using a dream blanket since our daughter was the same age as your son without any problems. I feel like those thinner blankets are easier for them to get caught up in, that situation was certainly a tragedy I think the recommendation of 1 is a good one. She loves being covered up and pulls it back over several times over during the night even during the summer.
