@lizzywiz: definitely do your research and make the best decision for your daughter.
All our family histories are different. It would nice if all my family led long healthy lives and I can make decisions for our kids carte blanche. .

We don't use low fat anything, we don't want any fillers in our food. We just eat less of it if we're worried about the fat content.

@lizzywiz: Sounds like you need a new pedi!
I have asked some DUMB questions to mine and he always answers them with grace. I'm pretty sure all parents ask "silly" questions because they are worried about their LOs and want to make sure they are doing their best for them. Your pedi should never make you feel bad about that.

We might switch, he doesn't really drink much cows milk though.

Doc said to switch and I did as soon as they finished their whole milk. I mixed it as first but they drank 2% just fine. They don't drink as much, but I really think that's due to going off the bottle nipple. We do straw cups now and they started drinking less.

We just had the discussion w/ our pedi about switching to 2%, but we're not going to do it. DD is quite slender and has plateaued in her weight gain for almost the last 8 months. Also, I just have this gut feeling that food should be eaten the way it appears in nature. I'm not quite brave enough to go for raw milk, but organic whole milk is what we've all been drinking as a family since DD turned 1 and started drinking cow's milk. (DH and I don't drink much milk, but when we do...)

I grew up on skim milk and low-fat everything, and I won't do that to my kid! I always thought milk was *supposed* to taste basically the same as water... sad state of affairs

We all drink 2% in our house, but wuth food we don't reach for the low fat options. Good fats keep you feeling more full and satisfied, so you don't actually feel like you have to eat as much. Low fat isn't as filling so people eat more...and usually low fat = more sugar (like fat free ranch dressing). So we stick to normal things.

We are not planning on switching. I also believe there is no such recommendation to do so here in Germany. I use non-homogenized milk for LO and it helps him better digest it than the processed milks.

@skibobrown: do you have local dairy farms near you? Many local farms near me carry a low temp pasteurized non homogenized milk. It's as close to "raw" as you can get without going raw. I'm not brave enough to try raw until the kids are older.

@locavore_mama: Yes, we often buy non-homogenized milk from a local dairy. (They carry it in many of the grocery stores near us.)

we don't plan on switching to low fat anytime soon, but will probably work on limiting her milk intake around 2 (she loves her milk!)

@locavore_mama: You are completely right that the best milk option is raw and preferably local. However, affording that is another thing entirely!
As to the original question: we won't be switching to low fat at 2. Our family health histories don't warrant it and I don't think fat, in and of itself (if it's from a good source), is bad at all. We just enjoy full fat items in moderation.
