I read that yesterday. I thought the mother's comment that she (the mother) really wished that she herself had never been borne so that she could not have given birth to her daughter and caused her (the daughter) so much pain was particularly poignant.

When will people get over this ridiculous black and white thinking about abortion? It is unreal how the conservatives have found new ways to chip away at this freedom.

This is so heartbreaking. I am so angry at the people who are trying to take our rights away, and for this poor woman and her daughter. Abortion is definitely not black and white.

Ugh- this is absolutely heartbreaking. I just can't believe all this woman had to endure because her doctor did not run a simple test for rubella (even after she ASKED about it). She believed with all her heart that her baby was ok. She loved her baby and prevented natural abortion multiple times because the doctor told her her baby was ok. Her poor daughter has suffered for 4 decades because she was given bad medical information.
@Madison43: I agree that the mother's comment about wishing that she herself had never been born was the most striking sentence in the article. She clearly isn't upset about the burden of caring for her ill child- she visits her often and does as much as she can for her. She just wishes that there was anything that could be done to make sure her daughter didn't have to go through this.

Well, this is all directly related to that insane Texas law (proposed law? was it passed?) where Doctors can lie to pregnant women with fetal abnormalities if they believe the mother may abort.
INSANE.

@Anagram: This infuriates me. I read it yesterday and it's still in my browser because I want to share it.

I keep coming back to this article and this story. To me doctors have a duty to inform patients and do whatever they can, within reason of course, to provide patients will all the information they need to pursue the best care. Its absolutely shameful the politicians are not holding accountable doctors who are not living up to that duty because the politicians disagree with what the woman does with that information. Where is the support when the government forces people to do what they don't want to do or need to do?
I remember reading another article about a mom with a child who has DS. When her doctor delivered her baby he exclaimed "he's perfect" just like the mom in this story. However, the DS mom was informed of her child's diagnosis throughout pregnancy and was able to make a choice for her life and his life. The rubella mom had no choice in the matter.

I think a lot about these issues, as someone who had a TFMR due to the effects of a virus, with a similar prognosis as with rubella. I am grateful that I had a choice, an awful choice, but I knew what I was committing myself to. There is sometimes a fate worse than death.
One of the doctors who advised us said you'll likely feel guilty either way - so at the end of the day, try not to let your guilt let you lose focus on what is best for your child and your family. I struggle daily, but I am grateful he could be so honest with us about what we might expect, both in terms of the prognosis and the emotional ramifications.
It is unthinkable that politicians with no medical expertise and no experience in these matters are making these decisions FOR us. I am angry. So Angry. And I'm using my anger to try to tell our story and make sure that people know that we are not invisible.
