@Mrs. D: I'm American and have been eligible to vote for half my life and still had to google it.
I had a fb comments convo about this and apparently some Iowans love it. I'm still confused though.

I don't live in Des Moines anymore (I did from 2010-2013), but I don't remember the 2012 caucus getting anywhere NEAR the attention it did this year. It's such a crazy process, I would have loved to do it this year if I wasn't in a different state now.

@Torchwood: yeah... I think while everyone has been caught up in the trump circus they forgot to notice how terrifying Cruz is. He is probably more conservative than trump, and likely agrees with all the stuff he says (but at least has some filter, I guess). I've been way more freaked out by Cruz all along.

@Silva: even as a staunch conservative, Cruz freaks me out. I don't understand why Rubio hasn't gotten more attention. I was thrilled and shocked to see he came in a very very close third in Iowa. I hope that gets his campaign more attention.

@Applesandbananas: I have to believe that Cruz won't be viable nationally. I'm very liberal, and all along I've said we should be so lucky as to get a trump nomination! He'd never win a general election, and he is so polarizing that all those lazy college kids who never vote will actually get themselves to a booth and Bernie will win! I mean, don't get me wrong, he he has highlighted som terrifying and rampant misogyny and racism in our country, but he has never had a chance of actually becoming president, especially with an increasingly socially liberal general population.

@Applesandbananas: I am SO pleased with Rubios performance. While I do think he is too junior to be president I like him so much!

I caucused several elections ago when I was young and spirited (not in IA!). I have no desire to go now, although I might feel differently if I really, really loved and felt passionately about a candidate.
I love the Bernie support, but I think it’s also misleading long-term. It’s young people who, when it gets down to it, don’t ever bother to actually vote in large numbers. So, I don’t want them to rob us of an election because they, as a group, can’t get their shit together election day.
Cruz is utterly terrifying. He’s as bad as Trump, he just knows how to button down the insanity. Even the R establishment HATES him. And they have plenty of reason to. He makes me much more nervous than Trump does.

Here's the video DH and I watched to help us learn the difference if anyone is interested. This guy is good at breaking down political things so a 5 year old can understand. Haha. Sometimes I need that.

@Silva: @Applesandbananas: I think I am more terrified of Cruz because he may end up being more electable to many than Trump, but currently is getting a pass on his crazy because of the Trump show.

@Mrs D: I feel like after Obama, no one is too junior to be president lol

@Applesandbananas: a very true statement...but I am one that doesnt think he has exactly proved himself in the 8 awful years...I wouldnt want Rubio to find the same fate

@Mrs D: I think that he's our best shot though. Christie's unhinged, Jeb could never beat Bernie or Hillary, Carson and Fiorina aren't going to get past the next few states, I do like Kasich but I doubt he's going to garner much support over the next several primaries either. I think at this point it really comes down to Cruz, Rubio, and Trump.

@Applesandbananas: I agree...I will be happy if he is even a VP on the ticket. I do not care for Cruz...so I hope he does not see the momentum some are saying he may. While Trump says some off the wall things - I am generally not terrified about him the way I am about Cruz...

@Mrs D: @applesandbananas: what's the problem with Jeb? Isn't he pretty much Rubio justt older?

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I personally just dont think he has what it takes. I just dont see him as being as strong of a leader. I think he is where he is mostly because of his name and just dont think there is enough substance there...

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts on that. My understanding was actually the opposite - that tea partiers want to cut government spending so that they can actually pay off the ridiculous government debt. But this is certainly something that I will now look more into.
I'm surprised that Cruz won in Iowa because he doesn't support ethanol subsidies. I think Trump was the only one who supported the subsidies. Speaking of ethanol - did anyone see The Bachelor Chris Soules' farming commercial play 1,000+ times during the caucus coverage?

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I personally don't dislike Jeb, but I think he lacks electability. I think people associate him with his dad and brother. And he's old and tired lol. He's not going to get anyone excited.

Having grown up in Iowa I will say that for those who caucus it is often seen as part politics, part social time so it's viewed less as a burden.
Yes, those with kids may be less likely to go or send a single representative from their house while the other parent stays home. But my cousin has a group of friends that all caucused together and had someone babysit their kids together. And in the case of my sister and BIL, as a "house divided" they flipped a coin to determine which caucus/parent their 8 month old went with (she hung out with her dad for a couple of hours and BIL reported there were a number of kids there).
FYI - the Dem/Rep caucus voting is a bit different, public v. private vote (Nightly News had a good breakdown - having trouble posting from work).

Saw this and made me laugh. Possibly just because it's Star Wars humor.

@artsyfartsy: that was perfect. Thank you. I was confused too, and yes, I love when things are dumbed down for me haha.

@Applesandbananas: I actually do like Jeb, but he'll never win because he's a Bush.
