My co-worker had a Jeep Liberty and had a lot of issues with the power windows constantly failing, so keep an eye out for that. She says she loved it other than the window problems.

My friend has a Liberty and traded it in cause they were having so many issues with it.

Mr. Bird went through multiple jeeps, they were giant headaches for us & I wouldn't consider buying one again.

We've had a Jeep Wrangler Unlimited for the past 6 years and it was my daily driver for the past 5 years. We are fans of Jeep and Dodge four wheel drive vehicles but I've never spent any time with the Liberty. I rode in one once and hate the lack of legroom in the backseat but I have long legs so I hate that in most vehicles.

Me. Hate it. It has power window problems and power lock problems CONSTANTLY. I've gotten locked in the car, and have had my baby locked in the car, on several occasions now. Tnank god when it happened the power windows were also broken, so I could just push one down with my hands to let myself out or get in
ETA: We have an '04 Libery 4WD.

I don't think I know any happy Jeep owners (especially those who bought used).

I had an 02 Liberty for about 6 years. That car was a work horse nad i loved it! I had a few issues with catalytic converter and i only had 2 wheel drive not 4wheel drive so after a pretty harsh winter when i slipped all over the place and i looked into getting a car that was better on gas with front wheel or all wheel drive.

I married into a Jeep Grand Cherokee because DH's entire family drives Jeeps (including 2 Liberties) and he's never driven anything else. In my experience, I'd never buy another Jeep and I would personally be REALLY leery about buying a 10 year old Jeep of any kind.
Basically, if you don't keep up with the maintenance religiously, the cars are huge money pits. Our '07 Grand Cherokee is in good shape, but it costs us a FORTUNE to keep it that way - there's always some little maintenance thing that has to be fixed or replaced. Every time we get an oil change, we find something little that needs fixing that ends up being $150-200 to repair. It gets on my nerves, but we always spend the money because if you don't stay on top of these 4WD vehicles, you'll have a $1500-2000 repair on your hands. Just the brakes and tires on the thing cost a fortune. DH's last Grand Cherokee lasted him 10 years and he still ended up dumping $1500 on the transmission the last year despite regular maintenance. We're looking at keeping this Jeep for a few more years, but we're definitely going to dump it before its 10.
My SIL drives a Liberty and never does anything to it, so my FIL has to constantly bail her out with HUGE repairs (like thousands of dollars). Her excuse is that she can't afford to make the small repairs all the time and I have no idea how often she gets her oil changed, so that thing is limping along. My BIL only drives Grand Cherokees, but he buys them 2-3 years used (off a lease, with new tires and brakes), drives them for 2-3 years, never does any maintenance on them except for oil changes, and then trades them back into his dealer for a new 2-3 year old Jeep. He basically gets rid of his cars once they are 5 years old so he doesn't have to do the brakes or tires or any significant repairs.
OH, also check on your particular model of Liberty - they have issued 2 safety recalls in the last year on them that affected my SIL. The dealer should fix it for free, but it was due to something crazy like a fuel tank exploding or something.

I just sold my wrangler that I had for 9 years and I loved it! Never really had any seriously problems. I only sold it because it was a two door and it was really hard to get DD in and out of her car seat especially rear facing.

I don't know much about the older models, but we have a 2014 Grand Cherokee and have been happy with it so far. The only downside is we have to take it into the dealer every time there is a system update regarding navigation, etc. Other than that, I love the car and I do feel very safe in it.

@pelikila: Would you rather have a 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee or a 2014 Dodge Durango?
nectarine / 2465 posts
I have a 2012 Liberty and I love it, it does only have 40k on it though, so if there are any issues I haven't seen any. People either love or hate Jeeps, and in snowy New England I loooooove mine.
ETA they discontinued the liberty's, I believe because of all the issues or because of the bad rap, so maybe look into another Jeep?

I have an amazing grand Cherokee that just runs and runs with zero issues. This one and my last have been nothing short of amazing and are crazy good in the snow. I've had 2 and my sister has had 3, we only have good things to say. No experience with the Liberty model though...

Wanted to add, our Jeep Grand Cherokee is going on 100k and we haven't had any issues yet, so these previous posts make me nervous!

@MrsMcD: Grand Cherokee. When I gave the Wrangler up to become the play toy I was considering a 2014 Lexus RX350 (I have so many friends that swear by them) and a 2014 Grand Cherokee and I would have picked the Grand Cherokee over the Lexus any day. It really has become a competitor for a smaller luxury SUV and handles great. I'm not a fan of the lines of the Durgano though I did not test drive it. I also love that you can get the GC in a diesel, which I know is not important to most people but is to my husband.

Yikes. Well, you all have definitely answered my question. lol.
That 01 CRV is looking better and better. It just like my old UK spec car, just newer and with less miles! lol

@Mrs. Polish: Im honestly surprised. The 04 Liberty has great reviews pretty much everywhere Ive looked.
blogger / nectarine / 2010 posts
@loveisstrange: I'm surprised too. I've never heard of anyone having that much difficulty with Jeep. I've always said my next car will just be a newer model.

@loveisstrange: there are lists of the best and worst used cars. Honda always tops the best lists and Jeeps are always on the worst lists! I used to have a Cherokee sport and the door fell off .... Years later DH got a grand Cherokee and his door fell off!!! Wtf?!
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
@loveisstrange: we bought a used CRV (2006) and it has been great. Dh isn't exactly easy on it either, he takes it on crazy back roads for work but it's really held up.

@cmomma17: @Charm54: My British CRV was crazy reliable and I really liked it. People want too damn much money for them in the states.
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
@loveisstrange: try canada, even worse!! Ugh. It was $$ but we needed a small, reliable SUV to get dh to work safely in sometimes treacherous conditions. No regrets so far!
pineapple / 12526 posts
@Charm54: I found an 01 for $4k, which seems crazy to me, but that's a good price! lol. I paid $1500 for my one in the UK.

DH has a Jeep Patriot. The time on his clock radio has been slowing down and they can't figure out why. They replaced the radio but it didn't solve the issue. Now a case manager was supposed to contact him by yesterday and still hasn't. We will not purchase another Jeep.

We are a Jeep family. DH has a '11 Patriot and I have the new '14 Cherokee. Lovelovelove.
ETA we had an old Jeep Grand Cherokee and drove it to well over 250,000 miles.

We owned a 99 Jeep Cherokee Sport and loved that car. Yes, we had to put a bunch of money in it, but it wasn't until it had well over 150,000 miles on it. We would probably still be driving it today if it hadn't been totaled in our wreck.
I test drove a Jeep Patriot and I loved it. I think we'll get another Jeep when we get our second car.
As for the Liberty, in my limited experience I hated it. The backseat was very narrow and uncomfortable, and as an adult I didn't like that I couldn't roll down my own windows in the back.

We have a 2005 Jeep Liberty and I don't have any of the issues that previous people mentioned!

Bump!! We are car shopping, and really liked the 2015 Jeep Cherokee Limited.

@dc yoga bee: We ended up buying an 05 Honda CRV, just as an update.

@dc yoga bee: if it is any help we are looking at cars and I've looked at the consumer reports reliability ratings - generally Jeeps aren't rated well.
pomegranate / 3863 posts
@dc yoga bee: If it helps at all, I'm driving an '08 Grand Cherokee Limited and had an '03 Grand Cherokee before that. Neither have been in the shop for anything but an oil change. They've been amazing and I'd absolutely buy another. In fact, I was just reminded on Monday during the snowstorm how much I love my Jeep while passing other cars and SUV's that we struggling in the weather.
grapefruit / 4770 posts
@loveisstrange: The crv is still on our list, but it looks like we can't upgrade to a v-6 engine
@CakeLady: So far, I've looked at Edmunds, but still need to look at more ratings and such!
@petunia354: DH's primary concern is how it handles in snow and ice (in addition to safety of course), so that's good to hear. My Honda does well, but we want a small suv and 4wd.
bananas / 9229 posts
@dc yoga bee: We loved our Ford Escape 4WD, meh about our Jeep Liberty 4WD and love our current Ford Edge AWD.
