So, we made the appointments at the US Embassy in London to apply for LO's certificate of birth abroad, ss# and passport.
How long did it take you to get everything back? How much of a pain is the process?

My son was born abroad. It wasn't a pain at all. If my memory serves me correctly, we got the birth abroad certificate and passport within a few days. The SS card took a while in the mail though - maybe a few months?

Our LO was born here in Tokyo. The process was pretty easy. We received her passport and certificate of birth abroad in a few weeks. The SS card we got in about a month and a half.

It was super easy. The hardest part was getting the passport photos done, so we just laid LO on the bed and did an overhead shot.

I hadn't even thought of this. Glad I have a few months to figure it all out.

Awesome. We're bypassing the base (we're stationed overseas with the USAF) and going through the embassy because we've heard so many horror stories about how long it takes to get everything back if you let the base send it.
We're doing it the first week of July and I want to fly home in September, so I was just hoping I would have LO's passport by then. Yay! Gosh, I hope the embassy isn't backed up from the Olympics.

I'm dreading this because it'll be a 3-hr commute one way to the nearest Embassy. When the time comes, we'll probably make it into a weekend trip so there's a hotel stay on top of the transportation and application fees to pay for.
Plus, I'm a naturalized citizen and my mom can't find my naturalization certificate! I still need to get a copy of my high school transcripts as well (unless college transcripts are good enough). It'll most-likely be our first trip out of town with the baby.

@Crumbs: We live about 2 hours from London, so we're staying at least 1 night.

If I recall, the whole appt lasted about 10 minutes. So glad we could just go to town for it.

@zippylef: when we went to the embassy, we met a couple who drive in to tokyo from the base in Yokosuka, to register their baby.
