I just fed Xander strawberry yogurt for the first time today (he's had strawberries once before, but not yogurt) and he had an immediate allergic reaction (hives, itching, difficult breathing, etc). After 4+ hours in the ER, we're home and he seems to be doing fine.
Has anyone had to deal with something like this? Was your kid permanently allergic to whatever it was? Did you see an allergist and have the allergy confirmed? Can babies grow out of allergies?

Oh no! Is it a dairy allergy? If so, good thing you caught it now before the introduction of whole milk!
The exact same thing happened to Noelle when we fed her a bite of PBJ the first time when she was 14 months. She still has her allergy to peanuts (we got a blood test done when she was 2). There's a 20% chance she could grow out of it later, especially since we have no family history of peanut allergies, but we aren't counting on that.

@Mrs. High Heels: We're not sure if the allergy was to the strawberries or yogurt. Hopefully we can get him tested and find out. I hope it isn't to dairy! That will make life so complicated!

Sorry to hear! We have peanut allergy with my DD so I can relate. Some kids to outgrow their allergies.. But it's not something you can predict... Definitely get a recommendation on an allergist. We consult with our allergist pretty frequently since kids who are allergic to things like peanuts (and dairy) tend to have other allergies as well...

Glad he's doing OK now.
My cousin has bad food allergies and has grown out of some of them. Definitely see an allergist so you know what he has.

Poor Xander! So glad that the little guys is ok.
This makes me even more sure I am giving R peanut butter for the first time in the doctor's office just in case.

@oliviaoblivia: Glad to hear that some allergies can be outgrown!! I'm hopeful, but obviously have noooooo idea about any of this! I've never had to deal with food allergies before!

@MoonMoon: Awww, don't be scared! I'm sure the majority of babies are totally fine and aren't allergic to things! Just take it slow! And the first reaction is usually not too bad, so just keep an eye out for any signs when you're introducing new things!

Oh you poor things. I'm so nervous about this because my wife has so many serious allergies to food and medicines. But if it's any consultation some of the allergies she had as a child (including strawberry) have been replaced with new ones as an adult (avocado! ):

Yes, kids with eczema are more likely to have food allergies as well. I have dealt with eczema, dairy intolerance, and nut allergies with my two kids. We go to see an allergist every year for tests. I'm sorry you had an ER experience. So glad he is ok now!!!

What a scary experience. Glad to hear that he is better now.
My LO has eczema and a few food allergies. He was tested when he turned 1 with a blood test, which indicated the following allergies: eggs, peanuts, and dairy. We later went to see an allergist who did a skin prick test on LO. It confirmed the allergies we knew about plus added dust mites to our list. We get blood tests done twice a year to see if his levels have improved. So far they have gone up. 
The allergist has hope that LO will outgrow it. Just have to wait and see.
Luckily his reaction can be controlled with a dose of benadryl. We use steroid cream as needed for his eczema. I also have an epipen on me in case of an emergency, which I have yet to use.

I've had eczema and a food allergy all my life. I've never outgrown them, sadly.

@shopaholic: The blood tests continue to get better too! The next test LO takes will be able to break down specifically what part of the egg he is allergic to. It'll be nice to see the results.

@Smurfette: I thought this same thing, but someone pointed out that doing that may put children at risk in the waiting room (if severely allergic to peanuts) ..I'd never thought of it before!

We have a life threatening nut allergy. I'll try to work on my blog post about it. I might suggest not getting the allergy testing for 6 weeks or so. This will give his immune system time to calm down so that he doesn't test positive to everything. It'll be important though because I think it's really hard to determine what it was in response to!
I'm glad everything is ok now and am so sorry it was scary!

@Mrs. Jacks: That's a good point about waiting for his system to calm down before getting him tested. I really hope he's not allergic to dairy... that would be so stressful, especially with him in daycare full-time! I have a follow-up appointment with a pediatrician tomorrow and then hopefully I can get an appointment with an allergist!
