Even though this is an Onion article, it pretty much sums up how I feel about Spirit:

Their customer service SUCKS. The seats are tiny.

@Bookish: But I should say that it depends on what you're willing to put up with. My BFF flies Spirit all the time because it's so cheap even though she hates them, too.

How much more is the next option? I would probably go with a different carrier given that your hubs doesn't want to be stressed out. I know with mine, I have to convince him to go anywhere so it has to be low stress if we ever travel.

My sister finds Allegiant to be pretty cheap and not as bad. I personally love JetBlue.

We flew from Houston to Chicago in October on American Airlines and our planes going both ways were small but only had two seats instead of three so we had the row to ourselves. It made our first flight with baby much less stressful knowing we weren't bothering a stranger next to us!

Ahahahahahaha...a few years ago we flew Spirit to Cartagena. DH and I still laugh anytime either of us says "Spirit Airlines" because the experience was kind of hilarious when we look back. If you think Southwest has an unusual boarding process, Spirit just has everyone rush the doors of the plane and fight for the seats. There was also an incident on the flight where someone collapsed and none of the flight crew knew first aid so they started reading a gigantic manual while we all worried that the person was dying in the aisle. Finally they asked for a doctor...and had to clarify that they meant "medical doctor". In the end they just left the guy lying in the aisle and people stepped over him. They're cheap for a reason!

We do it every summer to Myrtle Beach from Niagara. It's about 1/4 of the price from flying out of Toronto. It's not bad, but we didn't have kids when we did it. Baggage fees are super high, but we did have too much on the way home and they didn't make us pay so that was good. In 2011 when we flew with them carry on was free so we did that. This year when we went carry on was like $25 per bag and checked bags were $35. So we just checked one large bag for $35. The first time we used them our flight was delayed 3 hours But it's been ok since then.

@Bookish Spirit is awful! They literally have no customer service, if you call you will just get an automated message and no way to actually speak to a live person, we tried for almost a week after our flight was cancelled for no reason and the next one out was the NEXT DAY (and this was an 8:00 am flight that was canceled). They also did not follow through on the miles we were supposed to receive after opening a cc with them but again, couldn't talk to anyone about it. After those two experiences, DH and I swore never again.

I refuse to fly Spirit... my husband flew them once to save money and said it was terrifying (he flies constantly for work and never complains) and they charged him to put his bag above his seat and for a bottle of water. The extra savings are not worth the hassle.

Have an upcoming trip planned with them (our first weekend away without dd) I'm sure I'll regret flying with them - I could already tell when booking on their site that I was going to HATE them. They clearly nickel and dime you, have no regard for their clients and see you as pocketbook that they try to squeeze every last half penny out of.

Reading through these comments is kind of making me regret having actually booked the flight with them...God I hope it isn't a bad experience...

They charge you for carry-on luggage and for you to pick your own seat? Hell no.

I've flown them once, not with LO, and it was fine.
If you check their website, they are actually pretty clear about the fees. DEFINITELY check their website, because you can be seriously gouged if you aren't paying attention (like the cost to print a boarding pass at the airport is huge, but you can print at home for free or something like that and the same with telling them how many bags you are checking).
Ultimately, the fees for bags, etc ended up meaning that the flights that initially appear so inexpensive actually aren't all that inexpensive, so American or Jet Blue might actually end up costing the same.
