I want to paint our living room a light (well, not too dark) grey color. I picked up a few samples but they came out way too dark. Anyone have grey rooms?

We have a grey-taupe color throughout the main living areas of our home. It's pussywillow by sherwin-Williams.

Our main living spaces are Moonshine by Benjamin Moore. I love that it's light. To me it is a great neutral color.

@Sammyfab: nice! I think we're looking for more of a true grey, though.
@Leialou: @LAGS: those look good, thanks!!

Be careful if you go with the warm-gray tones. (pink gray's)....Because....welll.....we ended up with a purple looking living room. It's not terrible, but not exactly what we were hoping for. But we were moving in the next weekend and didnt have time to re paint before moving in.

Check out restoration hardware greys. Gravel would be too dark for you, but there's another lighter one in the same tones.. Can't remember the name off the top of my head and I'm feeding baby. I think it might be atmosphere.

We used Martha Stewart Bedford Gray (color matched at Sherwin Williams - I like their paint better). It may be a little dark for what you're looking for, but Martha Stewart has a lot of nice grays (at Home Depot)

We have grey walls - with a hint of taupe? I'll have to look to see the name of the color.

We have Benjamin Moore Abalone in our living room. We love it but in certain light it could look blue or purple so definitely paint a swatch first in a couple of different areas. I've also heard good things about Revere Pewter, also by Ben Moore.

We did LOs nursery in grey, but I'll have to look at the card when I get home.

My kitchen is Benjamin Moore winter solstice and I love it! My living room is one shade lighter on the same chip- silvery moon. I like that too but wish we'd gone with the darker one for both rooms.

Wow, so many greys. I'm gonna go to the Benjamin Moore store tomorrow, thanks ladies!
@MrsBrewer: one of the samples we got did turn out purple on our wall, ugh!

@Andrea: yep, I wish I would have known that before I painted all of our walls. But whatever....it can always be repainted! I'm glad you did the smart thing and tested yours though

@MrsBrewer: not that I have anything against purple, we have another room that color. It is more the waste of time and money. I wish they gave little paint samples for free!

@Andrea: I know at Home Depot the samples are only like $2 maybe a little more. But still cheaper than even buying a quart!
GOLD / wonderful coffee bean / 18478 posts
@MrsBrewer: oops, I thought it was more $. Ok, ignore my complaint then.

@Andrea: make sure to take the color swatch outside to see if it's really grey. We brought home 3 different samples and they all looked either purple or blue. I finally top k the color outside (out of the horrible lighting inside) and I was able to pick an actual "grey"

@Andrea: Ooo One more thought! I learned this when I was trying to pick out paint colors. I know at Home Depot you can actually go to the paint counter and "borrow" their huuuge thing of paint swatches. Like the thing that prof. Painters carry around. Yea you can borrow it for free! That helped me soo much, because I was standing there just staring at all the colors for probably 10 minutes, and finally a worked asked me if I would like to take the big thing home with me. I must have looked pretty pathetic!

@BabyBoecksMom: @MrsBrewer: thanks for the tips ladies! Looks like DH might be able to leave work early so we can go today. It going to be 99 degrees tomorrow and going to pick paint doesn't sound appealing in that heat. I just want to stay in my house with the A/C!!
@BabyBoecksMom: I just tried to view your photo but it says I do not have permission.

Here's the link for the swatches from Restoration. We color matched at Lowe's because the paint quality at restoration was sub-par (heat damaged).

Pumice was the grey just lighter than gravel.

After a very similar trial and error (although some of mine ended up too blue in addition to being too dark) we settled on Pewter by Benjamin Moore. I learned the hard way that you have to start with the swatch that says "Black" then work up to a lighter shade in order for it not to be blue or purple. Pewter is just dark enough to seem like we actually put color on the wall without being too dark to decorate with light furniture.

@BabyBoecksMom: so pretty! So there is no purple in that one? It looks a little purple but maybe only because you have purple accents in the room.

@Andrea: I LOVED the gray we used! It was the perfect shade and not too light but not dark either. It's called Wood Smoke by Glidden. There are two squares we did gray on my blog, here it is if you want to check it out!

@Andrea: No, it's really grey. I had a hard time trying to get the picture to show it. I think the accents and the lighting make it look like it has some purple in it.

@LAGS: We just painted our nursery sterling! It's a real nice light gray color. Although it reads a little blue sometimes depending on the light.
Dolphin Fin by Behr is nice too. I feel like gray is hard to find the right shade in.

@Andrea: http://lovelifeandmyjourney.blogspot.com/2012/06/week-22.html here is a picture of the nursery after we painted it Sterling by Behr. scroll down a little to see it.

@aMohror: @BabyBoecksMom: @mrskc: thanks so much! I love all your nurseries. I have so many options to check out now. Grey is such a pretty color but it is hard to get just the right one isn't it?

I've used Porous Stone by Dunn Edwards. I love it. It is a mossy-grey (so a little hint of green in it), but depends on the lighting in the room too, it can look totally grey , or mossy green grey
