I don't have any LOs so I only shop for the DH and I, but I don't seek out organic labeled foods. If it's on sale, cheaper than non-organic products, or I like a particular product that happens to be organic, I'll definitely buy it.

Nope. I even work in a food science and safety laboratory and no one here seeks out organic food and most people support GMO technology. Our chief scientific officer is even one of the most vocal about this issue

@lindseykaye: I'm a scientist in the biotech industry and I'm not worried about GMO foods, either.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22646 posts
nope, we don't seek it out. there's certain things that we buy organic for LO but for the most part we don't specifically shop organic.

ME. This also just confirmed my disinterest in organic food: http://www.washingtonpost.com/national/health-science/is-organic-better-for-your-health-a-look-at-milk-meat-eggs-produce-and-fish/2014/04/07/036c654e-a313-11e3-8466-d34c451760b9_story.html
And don't even get me started on all the hysteria over GMOs... lol
pomegranate / 3980 posts
Definitely not, like you if it is cheaper or whatever I'll buy it but I never seek out organic food.
nectarine / 2358 posts
In general, no I don't purposely buy organic unless the price is close enough to the non-organic version. I would prefer organic products but I'm not going to break the bank to do so.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
The only thing we buy that's organic is milk and it's because it lasts so much longer. I have no interest in paying more for food that I don't think is better for you.
nectarine / 2085 posts
I buy some stuff organic, but I care more about the ingredient list and whether certain produce is local. If local is not available, the country of origin of food is the next thing I look at.
apricot / 346 posts
I try to focus more on buying local. If it happens to be organic, great. I love going to the farmers market in the summer because it's a better price than the grocery store and I know I'm supporting a small business.

The only thing I purposely buy organic is milk, mostly because it stays good longer.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
Nope, sometimes milk though because it lasts longer. The cheaper the better though!
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
Interesting about the organic milk, I was actually thinking of just switching to regular now. If the only reason to go organic is because it lasts longer, I would just get regular...or is that a bad idea?

@lawbee11: @Mrs.Panda: @loveisstrange: @Bao: @looch: question for those about the organic milk - I thought the same thing because of the sell-by date, but my container said "use within 7-10 days of opening" ...isn't that exactly the same as conventional milk?
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@sorrycharlie: LOL I have no idea if ours says that (we buy Horizon), but I always drink it until the date it says and I've never had issues!
nectarine / 2358 posts
@sorrycharlie: I'm kind of liberal with that... haha. I've never had a bad experience. I'm more concerned about the hormones that goes into regular milk as I have PCOS and I don't need anything to throw me off!
pomelo / 5000 posts
There are certain produce items I like to buy organic, like strawberries. I also like to buy meat from our local farmers.
watermelon / 14206 posts
Just milk. Not cause it lasts longer - cause we breeze through milk - but I think it tastes better.
But I don't seek it out for anything else.
GOLD / wonderful apricot / 22276 posts
@sorrycharlie: @lawbee11: Haha yeah it says that but we drink it til that date anyway
clementine / 849 posts
Nope. Don't care.
To be fair though, a lot of our organic food is cheaper because it was grown near us! (we live in the midwest though)
honeydew / 7091 posts
I do not care. If it's cheaper, then I would get Organic. Not about to spend extra money for it.
If I was to care about anything, it would be local. That I wouldn't mind paying a little more for (like at Farmer's Markets and such)
persimmon / 1386 posts
I actually seek out non-organic. It mostly just seems like a scam to me so I try to avoid supporting. Except the family size fresh baby spinach. It is only sold as organic. Ha.
persimmon / 1085 posts
Only milk for DS and sometimes apples. The rest of the produce I buy is regular.
pomegranate / 3917 posts
I seek out organic celery (lol so much better) but other than that prioritize buying locally over anything else.
pear / 1517 posts
I prioritize local over organic but I use organic growing methods in my garden each year (which is 75% of our produce consumption, year round).

I care for some items and don't care about it for others. I buy organic milk, meat (mostly just ground turkey and the occasional beef), and some of the dirty dozen veggies/fruits. Sometimes I will go with whatever is on sale because that stuff starts to add up. We can't afford everything organic.
pomelo / 5509 posts
I only seek out organic for certain foods, like the "dirty dozen," because I'm more concerned with pesticides/insecticides going into my body than the whole GMO issue.
I'm also more particular about meat and eggs because I don't want the extra antibiotics and hormones in my body. If I can't afford the free-range, grass-fed stuff, I at least try to get the "no added hormones, antibiotic-free diet" stuff (if you can believe the labeling!)
blogger / honeydew / 7081 posts
I don't actively seek it out, but will buy organic if they are on sale. We shop at the farmer's market as much as we can, and I'll buy local if I can.
cantaloupe / 6885 posts
At the grocery store I don't care if it's organic or not.
I do try and buy as much local produce though to support local farmers and it usually happens to be organic.
blogger / eggplant / 11551 posts
i care about some things and not others. i do care about organic dairy and produce (the dirty dozen).
the things i don't care about are organic clothes, sheets, blankets, and organic processed foods/anything packaged up and labeled organic.
