I live in a Uni town and people go nuts here! Huge drunk fest downtown, half naked people everywhere... I just have come to dread this holiday.
Plus, I'm just not really into the whole premise of Halloween. Anyone else?

Ahh I am not into it too much, I am dressing DD up of course, but I could do with out it!

BOO!
nope. Sorry. I love it. I can see how drunk naked people can be really annoying but where I live it's all Fall colors, little people in costumes and the beginning of the Holiday Season. Nothing not to love.

I prefer Thanksgiving's spin on gluttony, frankly.
But I still pass out candy and put out my papier mache pumpkin.
I detested Halloween in college for the exact reasons you describe. A parade of toddlers and elementary kids is cute. Drunk frat boys, not so much. I feel your pain!

I didn't grow up celebrating halloween at all. I've never been trick or treating- actually, neither has my husband!
So no, I'm not that into it. Also I hate being scared - I don't understand how that can be "fun", so I don't like the movies/ghosts/etc theme of the holiday.
But I am taking J trick or treating for the first time!

I'm pretty "meh" about it. I don't hate it, I just don't think its a big deal

My birthday is around Halloween so it was very exaggerated and I'm completely not into it. Im finding it's a little more enjoyable with a LO but he dresses up and not me.

I love the kid aspect to it. I never trick or treated growing up (we lived very far from the nearest town), and usually by 8pm I'm pretty over it. Never thought of it as an excuse to drink in college- rats, that would have been fun!
Our block started an annual block party last year, which I absolutely loved. Great way to get to know the neighbors and relax with a beer in our driveway.

I love it! But I am not so into the super scary aspect. Some folks around here decorate like their house is a haunted house and to me, it's not that family friendly. I like the kid-friendly aspect and before we had kids, adult Halloween parties were a lot of fun!

I'm kind of meh. LO always looks cute in his costume, but I don't decorate or dress up myself. We usually get a pumpkin but not much else.

I am not into the super G-rated version it has become, but I love what Halloween should be!
Don't get me wrong; I detest gore and am not about to truly frighten my poor two-year old. But, to me, Halloween is about mystery, spooks and good old-fashioned mischief. I personally dig the scary stories, classic horror movies and folklore associated with the holiday.
And I don't believe in ToT'ing before the sun goes down. Like wearing white to a wedding. No.

I like it! I've always liked costumes and dressing up, and yeah in college and after, I enjoyed a chance to dress up and go to parties and drink- but I freely admit that now I have interest in being around drunk costumed college students!
My LO seems to love dressing up as much as I did because she LOVED wearing her costume and seeing the other kids in costumes. And I just think she was the cutest thing ever. So yeah I'm a fan.

I work at a Uni. I'm actually at work right now...
I just started getting back into Halloween for LO but before this I didn't care.
pomegranate / 3411 posts
Not me. I loved Halloween as a kid, as a party girl in university, and now as a mom. I love Halloween from all angles.
pomelo / 5573 posts
I totally don't care about Halloween. We carve a pumpkin and give out candy but only because I feel like it's expected by my neighbours. Mostly I find it annoying, although now that I have a toddler I do like dressing him up like a fuzzy animal. But if the whole holiday got cancelled I'd be fine with it.

Halloween's not my thing, but my husband loves it, so I have gotten more into it.

Thank you for not making me feel so alone!
I think I just don't really get it. Then again, I live downtown with the naked and drunk college people and people from all over the country coming for the naked drunk party in the streets... so I can imagine it more pleasant in a different neighborhood.
@honeybear: YES, I live in a huge college drinking city. I also prefer thanksgiving- it is about seeing family and being grateful and sharing delicious food- that's my kind of holiday!
@Mrs. Pen: I am not into that stuff either! I don't really have any attraction to it!

I used to live in a neighborhood where a bunch of grad students did and a lot of undergrads hung out. I totally hated Halloween then. Now that I live in the 'burbs, it is okay. We sit in our driveway and hand out candy (even if it rains!) I love seeing all of the mini Elsa's and mini Thor's.

I'm more about celebrating "fall" and would rather decorate for the season versus just putting out Halloween decorations. I'm really only into it because of my LO now, otherwise I could care less! I never really liked dressing up when I was younger. And I hate now how much costumes cost for little kids! I think I'm one of the rare people in our area that still makes homemade costumes.
apricot / 443 posts
I think it's awesome when you have small kids who are adorbs in costumes and if you live in a nice safe are with fun trick or treating. But before I had kids I absolutely hated Halloween because I constantly was having to deal with the drunk party aspect.
pomelo / 5607 posts
It was fun to put together a family costume for the first time, but other than that I could not care less. I don't like the scary aspect and I'm a grown up now- I can buy all the candy I want! I'll still try to make it fun for LO. But I'm a Christmas girl all the way!
ETA- I also had a drinking problem, so I can't/don't drink, and have major social anxiety, so parties are no fun. We've never lived anywhere with cute trick or treaters to hand out candy to, so where's the fun in it as a holiday?
persimmon / 1345 posts
I'm meh too. I'll dress up LO and we will go to neighborhood/church parties but that's it.
I'm also not that big of a candy eater so it wasn't an appealing even when growing up. I also hate the fact teenagers come to your door without dressing up and asking for free candy. Maybe I'm cheap like that
honeydew / 7622 posts
Eh, after college I could not stand it just a cheap excuse to drink too much and dress trashy. We would go to my family's beach house to avoid Halloween for many years. Now we live in the historic downtown district of a farming town and it has grown on me. Beer cheese soup, backgammon and TOT is always a fun night. But I feel you.
pineapple / 12566 posts
Not really into it. Besides, people don't really celebrate Halloween where we live. I don't mind seeing people in costumes though!
papaya / 10570 posts
Its not really celebrated in the same way here. For one, the costumes are only spooky related, you wouldn't see princesses or firemen etc. Secondly, not as many people do the trick or treating - its rare to see a house decorated and its hit and miss as to how many kids you get (and you don't know any of them).
The reason I'm telling you this @Greentea: is that I think you should move here! Most people over here hate Halloween! Getting interrupted all bloody night..... its "a thing" here to turn off all the lights and hide!! Whereas you have the teal pumpkin thing, every year there's talk here about introducing a sign to indicate no ToTers because old ladies spend the whole evening terrified or the gangs of marauding kids!
Boo, hiss, Halloween scrooges!!!

Our town is really into it. There are "safe" ToT's downtown, at the mall, and the local university. Lots of the churches also put on large scale events too.
As for me, I liked getting dressed up and going door to door as a kid, my 3yo gets it this year for the first time, but he doesn't realize the tradition of TOTing on Halloween night exists, he thinks going to daddy's office and getting candy (they put on a big event) is halloween, and this year im not going to correct him. Haha.
persimmon / 1259 posts
I actually am normally really into Halloween... I love scary movies and passing out candy and attending Halloween parties. This year, being 37+ weeks pregnant, I have not gotten into it at all. I didn't put one decoration up, I still need to buy my trick or treat candy for tonight, and I'm not sure I can handle a scary movie without peeing my pants!
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
I've never liked the scary side of Halloween at all. I don't get all the morbid stuff. My birthday is 2 days before and I hated my birthday as a kid because of Halloween. As an adult I think it's fun to dress up my kid and take him TOTing, and parties are fun, and I LOVE fall, so I like it, but still don't get the scary stuff.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
I haven't cared about Halloween since I was maybe in middle school. But now my son is interested and my husband, who grew up in a country where it is not celebrated, is all into it because he can trick out our front lawn. So I go along with it.

@Miss Sarah: me too, Sarah. I just realized this morning we never took DD to get pumpkins! Mom fail. She did get to paint one pumpkin at preschool and another one at a library program so I'm counting that. 38.5 weeks pregnant and I just don't give a damn about Halloween.
