I've been confused about this lately especially when I hear people talk about having a "sunny-side up" baby. Whenever the doctor tells me that my baby's head is down I assume she must be facing backwards and her butt is right in front of my belly is that right?

I think you are right. From what I understand, they face backwards and as they head comes out, they are supposed to naturally rotate. I had a c-section so I dont know for sure, but thats the impression I have

Yes, ideally and usually your baby will be facing backwards (i.e. in the opposite direction that you are facing).

From what I understand, they should be facing your back when they are in your uterus, but as they go through the birth canal they do a corkscrew spiral thing and end up face up as they emerge.

My LO was facing left when she came out! First person she saw was her daddy.

I don't think it's clear from a doctor only saying baby is head down because the baby could still be posterior (sunny-side up).
Best position for baby is anterior, with the baby's face facing your bum/spine because she can tuck her chin in that position. My baby was head down but posterior so my midwife told me no more reclining and more cat/cow exercises and she turned.

My daughter came out facing the right side. Haha. Her little nose was smushed for a day. But I think they are supposed to face down.

@mrsjazz: Oh I do understand that I cant know for sure which way my baby is facing, the doctor just said the head was down and I wondered what the normal face position was. I know its possible she may be facing the "wrong" way but just wasnt which way is the normal or "right" way.
I wonder because the shape of my belly changes sometimes and when I see movements I try to guess which parts she is moving. I think her butt is right is front of my belly I wont know for sure til i get my ultrasound in a few weeks.

My baby was face up and wouldn't budge when I was pushing so I ended up with a C section.

My baby has been head down for ages, but judging from where I always feel kicks she is facing my left side. I'm hoping she decides to figure things out for the birth!
At our birth class our instructor had us attempt to pass an anterior and a posterior baby through a model of a woman's pelvis. Now I can see why you *definitely* want your baby to be anterior. It is not easy at all for a posterior baby to pass through the birth canal.

@Mrsbells: You should check out the Spinning Babies website, they have this tutorial on belly mapping and figuring out what position your baby is in.
