Not to me. Also - Elias?

We named DS the same name as one of my first cousins. He is ~16 years younger than me and on the opposite coast. I've seen him maybe 2x in my life?

My vote is that Eli is perfectly fine! I think of it as a separate name from Elliot and Elijah.

I think it's fine - either just use Eli or whichever name you like better. Unless you see your cousins a lot (I don't even know any second cousins) it's not a big deal.

FWIW DH has a brother and a cousin (who they saw several times a week) named John - they both had different nicknames so it was never a problem.

I think it's weird, but you could do Elias! It's pronounced how Eli is, and then add an "us" sound.

Elias coincidentally, was actually one of my cousin's picks, but then my other cousin named his son that, and she was sad because to her that meant it was off-limits.

Your cousins, not off limits. LO's cousins, especially if they're close in age/proximity, off limits.

I don't think it's weird. Maybe a little if they went by the same name, but even then I wouldn't let it stop me. My dad and his cousin have the same first name, but my dad goes by his middle name. My cousin's son (5yo) has the same name as well, and goes by it.

I say go for it! Honestly, if there was a name I had my heart set on and a cousin, sibling, friend used it or was named that name, I don't care. Your baby is one of a kind. Name him what you want

ETA... However, I wouldn't use the same as a niece or nephew, so maybe I would scratch what a sibling used. Everyone else is fair game

I think of Eli as a name and not as a nickname! We seriously considered it for DS.

That being said, we've used names that are historically NNs for both of our kids' first names.

Why can't the name just be Eli and not a nickname for anything? Solid name.

@pawprints: Maybe that's why Eli alone doesn't sound weird to me? I've known many Jewish Elis.

I would just use Eli as the full name, especially since they are your cousins and not your son's.

Not off limits to me. The only thing holding me back from using family/friend names is the idea that that person may think we named LO after them? Which is weird to me, but probably silly!

For me yes cousins names are off limits, as well as their kids names.

Nope. My DH cousin named a kid same name, same nn as him. I thought nothing of it!

I'd go for it. I think it's way less weird to share a similar sounding name (or even the same) with a cousin of a different generation than a cousin peer.

My first cousin has two kids: Kyle and Kayla. In my younger days both names could have easily been on my short list. Her kids will be at least a decade older than any of mine. A name like Michaela for a girl would be fair game.

Yes F/ E or F/S are bad ass sidekick names.
