I am looking for an excuse to buy this Baby Gap jacket for M, but would it be totally impractical? I assume she can't wear something like this in the carseat? We're going to Chicago when she's 12 weeks old so I need some warm outerwear for her.

If its thick it cant be worn in the carseat but can still be worn once you take her out of the carseat. At 12 weeks though a thick blanket OVER the car seat straps is the most effective

You said practical...I am not a practical person so, maybe I shouldn't be answering but,
Here is how I reason it:
I only have one child. He is my world and I like to shop. So, I shop for him. If he wears something once, we take pics. Then, he grows out of it and I either save it for the next child or I sell it.
Sounds logical in my mind.
M will be in a stroller like A LOT in Chicago right? In/out of subways and/or being carried. I honestly used a jacket for E everyday in the winter, for stroller rides and times when we had a lot of walking in/out or stores.
*Can't be used in the car seat when shes in a car, but E wore his in his carseat all the time when I had his car seat locked into the stroller and or the bassinet part of the stroller. He didn't use the full body of the stroller until he was like 5-6m at the earliest.

@lawbee11: super cute! I'd think a puffer jacket would work best in walkable Chicago fall/winter weather tho!
I actually just read an article that says No babies should be in their carseat with their winter coats on because it diminishes the safety/security of the fit.
Here's a similar article: http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/news/2012/12/winter-coats-and-car-seats-keeping-your-child-safe-and-warm/index.htm

I think it looks ok! It doesn't look to be filled. You can test it... I am hoping one of our resident carseat experts will post here, but you can put the coat on your LO, put LO in the carseat and adjust the straps, take LO out and remove the coat, and put LO back in and see if the fit is the same. I think its mainly the puffer coats you have to worry about. DS has worn a couple of little jackets like that in the mornings lately, and they don't affect his carseat.

If it has a filling, like down or fiberfill, I wouldn't use it with the car seat.
Are you travelling with your infant seat? What about a shower cap type cover?

DD never wore a jacket in the winter months that she was an infant (Nov-Feb of the year she was born, she was 3-6 months). We had the JJ Cole Bundle Me for her carseat and that was enough to keep her toasty.
A jacket like that is super cute on its own so maybe you can put it on her as part of an outift (after she's out of her carseat?).

@lawbee11: p.s: these are awesome, because they cover the entire body. No need for warm pants and/or socks or even mits. . I am living vicariously through you ad your daughter. http://www.rhbabyandchild.com/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=rhbc_prod381561

@looch: the description just says it's "quilted"--doesn't mention anything about a filling.

@lawbee11: I personally would use this in lieu of a jacket. Who wants to button and unbutton a jacket off a 12 week old?

@lawbee11: that's a tough call, but I will be honest, I am in the better safe than sorry camp.

we have a JJ Cole Bundle Me for DD for the winter months. we have a few 'bunting type snowsuits' for her, but that will be if she's out walking around with us(probably in the carrier....MIL bought them for her, i didn't think we needed them)
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@TurtleDoves: ok I have seen those and I am obsessed! The only problem is we live in southern Texas so it's normally not that cold out. But I do love them!! Maybe I should just get both
squash / 13199 posts
I just want to mention that even the Bundle me by JJ Cole is now not recommended by many carseat manufacturers because it goes inside the carseat between the baby and the seat.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@locavore_mama: the only issue with something like that is that we would get no use out of it at home (we're in southern Texas--never snows, rarely dips below freezing). I feel like with the jacket she could wear that on the coldest days here.
wonderful pear / 26210 posts
@locavore_mama: those are also not recommended for use in the car seat, we have one for the stroller, though.
There are ones that go over the entire seat, after you're all buckled in, though, that is what I would get.

@lawbee11: is it like the Patagonia down sweaters? I know those are rated OK by a local car seat tech.
coconut / 8475 posts
@lawbee11: damnit! I didn't mean to make you get both If I knew I was pregnant, I'd buy them both from you when you're done. Both are beautiful. But, because you live in TX, I'd get the original one from Gap because, as you mentioned, there would be a chance that she could wear the pink one in TX once in awhile too.

@lawbee11: i'd vote the jacket then, esp if it's just for this one trip! this jacket u can always use at home on chillier days!
GOLD / wonderful coconut / 33402 posts
I would get the jacket, and if it is too thick to wear when strapped in the car seat, just put it on her backwards like a blanket.
cantaloupe / 6751 posts
Might be too thick for a carseat, but I would still get it and put her in it when we're out and about! It was late spring when my LO was that young, but still chilly enough for jackets, so I always had her in a cute fleece zip up or other type of jacket.
@TurtleDoves: um, omg, that is like, the cutest thing I've ever seen. GAAAH. I need another baby. ASAP.
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@locavore_mama: I'm not positive but it looks about the same or thinner.
@Smurfette: Oooh good idea!

we live in northern New England, and my (5 month old) daughter has a quilted coat like that. We use it in the stroller, or when we are outside playing. I don't put her in the car seat with it on.
We also have one of these: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00D3EPHGM/ref=cm_sw_su_dp
and use that in the stroller or front pack when it is colder.
In the car seat we just do regular clothes + a blanket on top. Then I put her in the appropriate outerwear when we are getting out (or just wrap her up and carry her inside).

@lawbee11: I can justify just about everything. Which is why I just ordered the pink puffy vest. R needs layers for her 8 month pictures in November
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@TurtleDoves: *hypothetically* if you were going to buy one of those faux fur buntings which would you get? I think the snow leopard is my favorite.
GOLD / wonderful olive / 19030 posts
I think if she's giong to be in a stroller in Chicago go for it! And in the picture it doesn't look poofy so it *might* be okay in the carseat, however I had a 12 week old in december and we just threw a blanket over the carseat and it was the best protection.

@lawbee11: my mom bought a similar Gap jacket for DD a few months ago. I didn't realize it before, but now that DD is active, it's very thin. So thin, that it would only really work for a late spring day or a chilly summer night. It's way too thin for even fall.
pomelo / 5469 posts
This looks like a jacket I recently bought for S for the fall. It's not puffy, just thicker fabric. It wouldn't have occurred to me not to have her wear it in the car seat!
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@TurtleDoves: K good because that's the one I bought...in addition to the gap jacket
pineapple / 12566 posts
@SugarplumsMom: I agree, that jacket does not look warm enough for Chicago in February. The last time I visited Chicago it was also in February and it was biting cold out and this was before I had DS.
Depending on how you plan on getting around with DD (car seat or stroller) and how much time you think you will be walking around outside, I would suggest a snowsuit or puffy coat. I second other PP's suggestions about the car seat cover, blanket or a stroller footmuff.
pineapple / 12566 posts
@lawbee11: ah, sorry, don't know where I read February! The jacket, which is totally cute, may work then. I would plan on lots of layers.

I'm the wrong person to ask because my LO already has three winter coats and three puffer vests. I tried to get her to wear a puffer vest this week (she's 10 months), and she tried to pull it off, but then she got used to it.
I"m with @TurtleDoves: this maybe my only baby girl and I love to shop, so why not!
GOLD / squash / 13576 posts
@TurtleDoves: hahahaha... I am the same way! I love shopping for my LO. He just looks so dang cute in everything (not biased mom at all).
I would buy the jacket, you can definitely have your LO wear it in the stroller and while out and about. And lets get real, it's freaking adorable. BUY it!!!
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@lamariniere: I did buy the faux snow leopard bunting that @TurtleDoves: mentioned above (1) in case it happens to be very cold and (2) because I have no self-control
@littlek: Done! It didn't take much convincing!
honeydew / 7091 posts
@lawbee11: Oh my goodness - you are going to have to post pictures of that!! I'm sad it doesn't come in bigger sizes for DD!
