Where does the $20 go? Is it for the bride and groom or is it for the bar?

Was it at an event venue where they had to book out a place? Or was it at a bar/restaurant? And was it really a ticket vs. helping out with costs.

I've heard of "Jack and Jill" parties where people pay to get in and the proceeds go towards helping the couple with the wedding. But I've never actually heard of anyone throwing one of these.

I think those are "buy a ticket, proceeds go to the groom" kind of thing. They're pretty common in my hometown and I forbid my father to have one for my husband or brother.

It's definelty a regional thing - my husband and all his friends had this kind of party. The tickets cover food and beverage, and sometimes also to purchase prizes for raffles (like bottles of alcohol) and then whatever is leftover is given to the groom for honeymoon, or whatever. In my area, people often buy tickets to support friends (aka - make a "donation") and then never go to the actual party. It's very weird.

I've never seen one advertised as that, I've had to chip in money for a bachelorette party to pay for the limo/party bus/ect. and that never bothered me, but I think just to attned the party would. I have went to some where I skipped the bar hop and just attended the social gathering part, I wouldn't want to pay then since I didn't not drink or ride the provided transportation!

It's definitely common around here. my husbands and brothers bachelor parties were pay or the ticket. But they had more than enough food and good food. Then they also had raffles and 50/50. The point is(I think) to get money for the groom and to help pay for the bachelor party. Usually the guys throwing it take enough money out that was made to cover the food/drinks/entertainment and the rest goes to the groom.

I've heard of various money-making wedding "schemes" via WB/Knot but never seen any but the money dance in real life. I'm not a fan, at all.

Never heard of it, and I think it's weird. Chipping in for a party, I can understand, but I wouldn't be down w/charging friends like that.

I think it's regional. I've heard of this in other locations (Canada, I think?), but it's not common in my area.
