I read an article today about "closet moms"- women who are big into boutique brands of kids clothes and bst pages. Some of it is way beyond me but I'd love to get some pointers because right now I just have bins of stuff sitting around, some of it fairly high end. Any favorite groups or brands? How do you manage the constant shipping etc?

I'm in a few BST trade groups- Hanna Andersson & Janie and Jack. I'm not sure I'm a closet mom only about 20% of her stuff is higher quality than Gap. But I love quality dress up clothes and nice jams.

@MrsBrewer: Me too. 90% of his clothes are from target and carters. Maybe that will change when he can wear something more than two months lol.

I have gotten into it a little bit lately. Mostly June & January. I just covet quality, unfussy basics so much and it fits the bill. No "Mommy's Little Man" or whatever on things! And the way it sells out so quickly and all the hype definitely got me hooked to an extent! And you can convince yourself it's not too bad to spend the money when it all has great resale value. I'm "in" to the point that now LO is going to be modeling for the brand
But ultimately I am too cheap and too busy to go too nuts like some do. 90% of what we have is Target & Old Navy unless it is gifted, and I try to sale shop.

ETA: not to say that I judge the people who are. I just don't have the brain space for that. I don't deal hunt or hardcore shop for anything else either. I'm just not skilled in that way

I am too lazy!! Wish I could though. I get a couple really nice items a year. Plus we use mainly hand me downs so I feel compelled to donate those when we are done.

I'm definitely not a closet mom, but i have seen some who are! DD has a lot of Matilda Jane, which we love because it wears so well and lasts so long! She has several pieces that are still 12 month that she can wear at almost 3 because of the way they are made.

@matador84: I've found that to be true of some nicer things we've bought too, the shoulders and arms funny look huge but they accommodate a wider range of sizes so dresses become tunics easily. I think my biggest hang up right now is we need a new printer and without a printer the whole thing is overwhelming.

I totally am! I buy and sell about 90% of my kids clothes on BST groups on FB or Kidizen. What do you want to know??

Well we buy a lot of items from online boutiques but I don't sell. I love having some unique items mixed in with out gap and old navy stuff.

@Cole: I just ship at our post office the old fashioned way! I don't do a ton of selling but we also don't have a printer and the cost/hassle of shipping at the PO is less than buying a printer... And it's worth it to sell! Though the PayPal balance burns a hole in my pocket fast

@Cole: I print at work! It's SO easy through PayPal. You buy polymailers via Amazon for about .25 cents each, some shipping tape and you're good to go!

@Trailmix: @daniellemybelle: Thanks ladies! Do you have favorite bst groups? Any tips on pricing or queen it's worth grabbing things? Any brands that have done better or worse than you'd expect?
The article I was reading was saying that a lot of these women are breaking even with it, so they're selling enough to cover their purchases. This seems semi impossible to me, hope do you balance the costs?
And laundry tips?! How do people keep this stuff so immaculate with a toddler?! We have a few pairs of mini Melissa and Livie and Lucas and I swear one trip to the playground knocks them from vguc to play!

@Cole: Mini Boden sells very well, typically. Specific Hanna Andersson pieces (PJs, play dress sets, applique shirts, etc) typically do well too. Shoes are definitely more of a gamble but if you clean them up a little bit before taking pics and the price is right, both LL and MM are in pretty high demand. Also, season and condition matter. Selling off-season is harder, although not impossible, and obviously selling play condition is harder, although also not impossible. My favorite BST group for HA and MB is called, haha, Mini Boden and Hanna Andersson BST. The best LL group is Livie and Luca Lovers Resell and the best Mini Melissa group is Mini Melissa Lovers BST. If you search the brand on facebook plus 'BST' or 'Resale', you can usually find the groups and request to join. I don't break even on my kids clothes because I'm a chronic overbuyer but overall, I'm not that far off! And they get to wear high-quality, super-cute clothes for minimal cost
Plus, it's a fun hobby for me, ha.

@Trailmix: thank you! I appreciate the pointers, I feel like I'm already semi obsessed, I may as well try my hand at the bst world. I'm eager to jump in but we are also trying for another baby so it doesn't make a ton of sense to be seeking everything but I might get rid of the things I doubt a 2nd child would wear and fund fun new purchases!

Hand raised! Total closet Mama over here - I love it! And I do think for the most part, I break even or close to (or rather, used to - bst economy has gone downhill recently and it's nowhere as vibrant as it used to be). I love Tea, Boden, FP, Rags - love their clothes and I would rather spend $20 on a Tea dress that I can at least get $15 back on rather than target that has no resell value
