I don't think we've bought any second-hand toys yet, but I have definitely bought second-hand clothes, especially when he was little little. There is an incredible kid's consignment store in my MIL's town that she and I hit up sometimes.

Heck yes! Nearly all of her clothes are 2nd hand, our swing and play mat, glider, and changing table were all off of craigslist.

Absolutely! We almost never buy clothes new. She does have a good handful of new toys but those were gifts. I love buying used especially when it's practically brand new.

Yes I wouldn't mind and am looking forward to visiting high end neighborhood consignment shops.

Yes, DH just picked up a fisher-price outdoor kids table from Craigslist a few days ago, and now all DD wants to do is eat her dinners there instead of her high chair!

we've purchased clothes for DD used and i would buy toys used too but she doesn't have need for any now!

I have bought some really nice clothes at a high-end consignment shop! I got LO several Janie & Jack dresses for like $7:)
My mom buys toys for LO at garage sales and even though she swears she cleans and sanitizes them, they skeeve me out!

most definitely. before kids i'm not sure. but after charlie was born, i realized there is no point in buying all that gear new! now i am a used toy/clothes buying/selling machine!

I don't mind buying second hand clothes. Most toys I would prefer to not purchase second hand.

I was wary about buying clothes...I had images of all these mystery stains and off-color stuff, but when I went to the consignment store I found most of the clothes looked /barely/ worn, if not new.

Totally. I just wash/wipe down whatever it is that we bought. There is a huge baby/kids consignment sale coming up in a few weeks, and I am ridiculously excited.
The only thing I ever bought second-hand and then changed my mind on was an infant crinkly book. I couldn't put it in the washer, but it was fabric and so seemed kind of gross to pass on. I ended up throwing it out.

Yep! I just bought my little guy an exersaucer at a consignment sale for $20. I took it apart, cleaned it, and it looks brand new. I haven't bought any clothes yet, but that's mainly because we have been gifted a lot of clothes and my mom loves buying him clothes.

There is a great consignment store near where I live that I've bought clothes at. I bought a glider and baby swing from kijiji. Just had to clean it all so I knew the germs were gone, but I cleaned all the new stuff too because you never know whose germy hands have been on it in the store.
wonderful grape / 20453 posts
Definitely! 95% of her closet is used! And a lot of her toys, too. Almost anything can be cleaned

Yes! We've gotten some really good used clothes at a consignment shop. I also bought a lot of our cloth diapers used. I figured he was just going to poop on them, anyway.

I just bought some clothes this past weekend at a consignment sale. I looked briefly at the toys but nothing interested me. I would only buy something I could clean really good.
Stuffed animals would never happen.

I've bought a couple second-hand toys that are easy to clean and sanitize, but that's about it. Not a fan of used clothing unless it's from someone I know.

Nope. I've never bought anything second hand for myself, and I haven't done it for LO either. I just like buying new, and I figure they'll get used again for future LOs, so I feel better about the cost.

I've only bought a couple of used baby clothes. I don't mind it but I'm lazy and its easier to buy it new.
pomelo / 5093 posts
Constantly. All of her clothing is used, from H&M, Old Navy, or sales at the gap, zulily, etc. The money that people charge for clothing that just gets stained and grown out of, I cannot even believe. Tons of used toys and gear, too. I just found the melissa and doug latch puzzle used for $8. It was like new! I love a great bargain find for myself, too. I find that I find much more interesting and diverse clothing that way.

So far, I have not gotten anything second hand. I usually just try to score good deals on new stuff. I am planning on going used for a jumperoo though.

There aren't any good consignment shops near me - I went to one "upscale" one in a neighboring city and was pretty grossed out by much of the selection. But I have gotten a few gems on eBay 2nd-hand and my sister has gotten me some great stuff too!
Toys are a little more iffy. They seem like they'd show a lot more wear and grime? I did get a used Bumbo, but it looks brand new and I Cloroxed the heck out of it!

@shopaholic: same
there are no consignment shops near me and the thrift stores in my area are really gross or lack selection. Maybe if I traveled to a nicer area the thrift stores would be better but I don't have that kind of time. I am a bargain shopper though and still never pay more than $5-7 per item of clothing for my son.
If it's a big baby gear item like an exersaucer I look on craigslist.
bananas / 9118 posts
Yes, if it's in good shape, I have no problem with that! Everything gets a good scrub anyway when I get home.
cantaloupe / 6923 posts
I don't have kids yet but I've been stocking up on clothes since before I was married. I have some awesome outfits and feel like I wouldn't need to buy a whole lot when I have a baby. I absolutely love thrifting and in my opinion the dirtier the thrift store, the better. Way less crowded and way more treasures!

Yep. MIL works at Goodwill, so I use her extra discount on stuff that's already cheap! She works at one in a nice area, too, so we've gotten some nice brands from her store.
cantaloupe / 6610 posts
@wheres_c: Will & Emma's closet in Boca! I have gotten H several Janie & Jack dresses, Juicy Couture, Tea, & Petite Bateau there for awesome prices and in great condition!
papaya / 10473 posts
Yep! I like to do it in person though. I'm afraid I'll miss a big stain or something if I'm only looking at an eBay photo. There are a few toys I wouldn't buy second-hand because they're hard to clean, like stuffed animals, but everything else is fair game!
pomelo / 5720 posts
I haven't bought any second hand toys but I have bought gently used cloth diapers and LO has a lot of hand-me-down clothes that were given to us. So long as the item is in good shape and washable, I think we'd take it if was something we'd use.
nectarine / 2886 posts
Not really. The only things I ever bought second hand were a bumbo and a swing for my LO, both of which were only used a handful of times and I ended up re-selling them. I'm weird about used things and DH is even worse so we prefer to buy new and will save them for #2.
grapefruit / 4442 posts
I bought some used baby gear like swing, bumbo and we got a lot of hand me down clothes. I just washed all the covers and wiped down everything.
I was talking to a friend of mind and she mentioned something about children's clothing swap... I was very intrigued because i have infant clothing and DD grows way to fast and I need more sleep and plays but buying them on sale for $8 still hurts.

I don't have any consignment shops near me so I haven't purchased anything used besides some cloth diaper covers.
