We're doing some home renovations so I'm looking online for inspiration. Everything looks so great online but do people's houses really look like that?? I know my house doesn't and I have only been to one person's house that does. But she's super rich and is a big shot in the publishing world so she probably hired someone to decorate. How do I get my house to look like it belongs in a magazine? LOL.

Have you looked at pinterest? It has a lot of DIY tutorials for things.
I don't have a very fancy style. I prefer artsy fartsy, bright colors, etc. rather than what I see in the magazines. I think that my main problem is that I can't afford the stuff that I want for the house though.

I have ideas of how I want it to look but I couldn't ever pull it off without an interior designer helping me. I just am not good at putting things together to get the look I want, but I know what that look is. Having someone come in and do it was worth the money to me because she made it all look so easy!

i definitely need an interior designer. i wish i could translate inspiration into real life, but that's a lot harder than it seems.

Hi Andrea! She charges a flat rate and then I pay for all of the furniture and textiles purchased. On top of that, I pay a 25% commission on the items she has to purchase. It gets expensive but it's so nice to have it look just right.

@Andrea: most designers also offer e-designs. they are affordable and can help you make decisions like key pieces and paint color.

Andrea Oh yes, remodeling is a huge expense unto itself! I think it's wise to use most of your budget there. I have never heard of MrsBees idea but it sounds great.

@Andrea: they will pull together an inspiration board based on your budget, style, and room. they will pick paint colors, give you links to buy furniture & accessories... a pretty great deal for an interior designer's eye.
what is your aesthetic? i read a ton of blogs and might be able to direct you to someone that fits your style. i think they're usually around $300.

I love decorating/designing. I'd say my style is modern but warm. And I love the challenge of making things look awesome on a budget. Our house is a mashup of Target, Ikea, Overstock, West Elm, and a little bit of Bed Bath and Beyond ... but I like to think it looks a lot more expensive!

i would love to hire an interior decorator. i like to go to model homes and see how they decorate things. but it NEVER turns out that way. lol. never.

I'm not good at it, but I wish I was! My problem is I don't like clutter and neither does my husband, so all I can think about is 'If I buy this and put it on a shelf/hang it, it's one more thing I have to dust or clean'! But then I'm so envious of people's beautifully decorated homes with all of their personal touches!

Do you have to buy any furniture? Usually furniture stores have in house designers and they'll help you with a layout or purchasing accessories for free.

@looch: We don't have to buy a whole lot. I am mainly freaking out about remodeling our bathrooms and picking everything out for them. Hopefully the people at the store will be helpful ....

They usually are...they too have designers.
Just pick one thing you love and build around it. The rest will fall into place!
