Um no. I don't even understand all the hoopla and it's such a non-issue to me that I don't even care to read about it.

@peachykeen: This exactly! It's not like the old cups had crosses and angels and nativity scenes on them! How is removing pagan symbols an assault on (the true meaning of) Christmas?!
Frankly, my first thought was that it was a money saving initiative not having to get the cups printed with designs. Who knows, and really, who cares?! If anything it was a GENIUS move by Starbuck's marketing department. Look how much press they're getting!!!

@Mrs. Pickle: Me, too! I didn't even notice until I saw an article about it online. I was excited for the red cups to come out, not the red Christmas cups!

@snowjewelz: I know, I feel if you'd rather have a traditional Santa pic, just go to another mall! No big deal

This is so ridiculous. A Christian friend of mine posted this on Facebook which I thought was spot-on:
Apparently some American Christians think a future conversation in heaven is going to go like this:
Martyred Syrian Christian: "So yeah, I was beheaded by ISIS fighters. How about you? What was your persecution like?"
American Christian: "Wuss. Let me tell you what real suffering for Jesus looks like: A luxury warm energy drink company didn't put 'merry christmas' on their cups around Christmas time."
Martyred Syrian Christian: "My bad. You totally had it worse. That was a very real persecution, and I feel ashamed for even calling the loss of my head a persecution compared to your loss of words on your cardboard coffee cup."

It offends me that people spend time and dollars redesigning a stupid cup. Just use the same cup year-round and take the savings from the marketing budget to do something that is actually meaningful. (Either reinvest in your business or donate to some charity.)
People who pay attention to stuff like this have too much time on their hands.
(I will admit that I'm a secular American Jew who doesn't really care about Christmas too much.)

what baffles me more than someone being irritated by a red cup is how the topic has blown up in the media. I don't get it. Doesn't everyone have better things to do?
Side note, it would be hilarious if this was just some hoax/payoff by Starbucks to build more revenue.

@Mrs D: Yes, peppermint time! And I agree about the merry Christmas thing. I'm an atheist, I celebrate a secular Christmas, but if you want to wish me a happy [insert holiday of your choice] I'm just going to appreciate the kindness behind it. Except for the people aggressively wishing me a merry Christmas to make a point that THEY celebrate CHRISTMAS in this country because this is America dammit.

I just saw red cup outrage guy, Joshua Feuerstein, in a CNN interview. He provided several reasons why the cup outrage is real. At one point he said we live in a Christian-Judeo society and that is why Obama had to pretend to be Christian to get elected. MUTE

@Mrs. Microscope: I wish I could've seen that!! Though in all seriousness I'd be a little scared to pull that here. People can get really nasty.

This is one of the things I really dislike about social media...the very fact that people do things like this just to rally the troops against something, and it works, because there will always be people out there to support you. I know nothing about this guy, but the description in the article is "social media personality" - which tells me all I need to know about his motives here, I think.
Seeing these cups everywhere really has me craving starbucks!

@Autumnmama79: Just FYI Starbucks actually is a publicly owned company so they do have to answer to their share holders. Which is exactly why they don't align themselves with a particular religion.
ETA: That came of kind of snappy, I didn't mean for it to! Just saying it's even more support for why it's absurd that people are upset over this!

People love sensationalism and complaining. I love the clean minimal design.

@youboots: Same! I think it looks better.
I also appreciate that the new cup probably costs less to manufacture.
cantaloupe / 6059 posts
Honestly, I think this is being blown out of proportion. I'm a Christian and not offended in the least. And I don't know anyone who is. I'm not who is driving this campaign against Starbucks but I've not encountered anyway who didn't think it was stupid.
The cups, however, are BORING as I'll get out!
hostess / wonderful apple seed / 16729 posts
Do you know who should be offended? Graphic designers! They could have hired one instead of going with a boring ombré red cup! Haha. (I know a graphic designer probably was hired to make a few designs and this was probably chosen. Oh, I know as a wife of an artist how even an ombré red cup may need to designed by a professional.) I know the graphic design field was all up in arms when they changed the gap logo. I think they used a boring font.

I thought the only group who cared what colour of cup they drink out of were toddlers

I really wish the couple of people who voted yes would say why. They'll probably get flamed though, so I don't blame them for keeping quiet.

@Pirouette: this was exactly what I was thinking!
And I have a different perspective on Christmas because I have always celebrated Christmas and I've never been a Christian (I was raised Buddhist).
I wonder how many people like me there are in the US because for me Christmas has never been about Christ or religion at all. When I was a kid it was about Santa and presents and as an adult it's about family.
grapefruit / 4418 posts
I don't get this at all. Why is it offensive to say happy holidays to be inclusive? Alternatively, why are you offended if someone says merry Xmas and you're not Christian? I'm Jewish and never care when I hear merry Xmas, I take it as a kind greeting. People need to chill.
pomegranate / 3003 posts
The funniest part of this whole thing is that the people claiming to be mortally offended don't even know how a proper boycott works. You can tell the barista your name is Merry Christmas or The Duchess of Bunghole; Starbucks is still getting your money. If anything, this entire media frenzy is probably working to their financial advantage.
Although now I do wish they went from festive "Merry Christmas" cups to rainbow. Might I suggest this strategic move, Starbucks?
bananas / 9357 posts
Not offended at all. I hadn't heard about all the outrage over the red cup until today. I honestly didn't even realize they put designs on the cups in previous years. I don't really pay that much attention to a cup.
pomegranate / 3393 posts
Wow, for a second I was embarrassed because I thought atheists/liberals were outraged at recognizing the holidays. But thank the flying spaghetti monster it's the religious wackjobs creating this fake controversy!

@Eko: I've had the same thought of wondering if this is not just some fancy pr work...

@bluestriped bee: actually Starbucks is known for having the best in-house design department in the country! I'm guessing this was driven by executives hoping to be as neutral as possible and they did the best they could with just red.
pomegranate / 3411 posts
@simplyfelicity: I thought it was at first too. Then when I first heard that the red cups were actually offensive, I thought it must be for some wacko reason but Christmas did not enter my mind.
grapefruit / 4361 posts
Like @sleepybear said, I have a ton of conservative Christian friends and not one of them is upset about this. I'm definitely not.
And like @badgermom said, the former designs weren't faith-based. They were generic winter designs or had their roots in pagan traditions that have been co-opted by Christianity.
@sera_87: Literally LOLed.

@sera_87: lol!!!!!
Between pregnancy and GD, I would kill for a Starbucks drink out of a rainbow cup..... Idc what color it is!!!
grapefruit / 4584 posts
i honestly didn't even pick up on the fact that the designs were gone until I saw the media coverage. I noticed a red cup in someone's hand at school drop off this week and was like "Oh, Starbucks put out their holiday cups". Totally didn't miss the ornaments.
grapefruit / 4187 posts
Not offended, but I do think it's sad. We definitely seem to be moving away from acknowledging Christmas in order to be more inclusive. The head of my group at work the other day said he was going to take us out for a Christmas lunch and we were floored. No one says that anymore in corporate America!
hostess / papaya / 10219 posts
@Modern Daisy: yeah, I guess I just don't get that at all. I never find it sad that people try to be more inclusive. And christmas seems bigger than ever to me. Christmas music everywhere, decorations are out already in early November, stores sales on Thanksgicing because Black Friday wasn't enough.

I wish people who get worked up about things like this would get real problems. There are so many terrible things going on in the world, the design on a $5 coffee cup sing one of them.
