I have yet to encounter anyone IRL who is offended, but I keep seeing it all over the web and twitter. Are you offended?

I wonder if these people are equally offended by red Solo cups?
pomelo / 5509 posts
No this is the most ridiculous thing ever. It's a freakin' cup. People will use any excuse to get offended these days.

Not at all! The red signals Christmas to me. My holiday is being acknowledged. If anyone should be offended it's all of the other religions with winter holy days that are left out because red doesn't mean much to them.
Telling barista your name is "Merry Christmas" is a dick move. The frontline baristas have nothing to do with cup designs.

it's a cup...
We have this outrage going on at our local mall too -
I don't take santa pictures tho.

I think the red is pretty, but honestly wouldn't care if it stayed the same all year long.

As a Christian the outrage outrages me. I saw and shared this on Facebook yesterday. The entire "war on christmas" is kind of absurd in the first place but this is just plain ridiculous.

I'm a Christian and I'm not offended at all. I think they were just making a universal cup for the holidays. And that's great! People need to lighten up

People have way too much time in their hands if they're sitting around dreaming up conspiracy theories like this.

As a Jew, I am offended they only make cups in red and not blue.
Just kidding, this whole thing is f*cking ridiculous.

As a Christian, it makes me mad that people are getting so upset about this. It's a red cup. And I'm anxiously waiting for my eggnog latte....because my faith isn't affected by what coffee I drink.

Where do people get the energy to get offended over cup color? I mean, there are actual, real problems in this world...

I have a lot of really conservative Christian friends (I myself being Christian as well) and I have not seen anyone who is offended. All that Starbucks did was take snowflakes and reindeer off a cup...if that ruins someone's Christmas, I think they're missing the point of the season entirely (especially if they claim to be Christian).

@snowjewelz: This mall thing is out of conteol too! I'm hoping if all these people are really
"boycotting" it, it won't be so crowded on Black Friday

No reindeer on the birthday of our saviour? That's basically like crucifying Him all over again. Like when they took The Gospel According To Santa out of The Bible. How dare they declare war on our religious beliefs. What next? I'm gonna tell Starbucks my name is Frosty the Snowman and really put the Christ in Christmas.

Saw this and am just so confused as to how this could possibly matter to people! Seriously?! It's annoying enough that they give you shit for saying "happy holidays" (even if there's nothing about them to indicate they're Christian (like a Christmas sweater) (also, not all Christians celebrate Christmas! My aunt and uncle don't), but now they HAVE to have Christmasy coffee cups? Wtf people.

A friend went to Starbucks this morning, and said about 30 church members in line in front of him all ordered using the name Merry Christmas, just to force the baristas to say it each time they called out the drinks. When it was my.friend's turn, he said his name was Hail Satan, which got some laughs from the baristas and the non church member customers!

People sure do love to complain about inane things!
ETA: As a private company, Starbucks can do whatever they please with their company logo or wares - hilarious that the public think they are entitled to a say!

I am a church-going Christian (though a very open-minded one) and the most confusing part to me is that snowflakes, reindeer, trees, etc have absolutely nothing to do with the religious part of Christmas! So very confused at this manufactured problem...
I do think the more decorative cups were prettier, but could really care less - either cup holds my coffee just fine, and the red cups are still plenty festive to me!

I'm Christian and I'm not offended. I'll also add that my Christmas card every year says Happy Holidays. I celebrate Christmas but I understand not everyone does.
pomelo / 5257 posts
Haha this whole thing is ridiculous. The designs weren't even Christian! Unless I forgot the part of the Christmas story where the three snowmen visit the baby Jesus...
ETA: Also ridiculous that their form of protest is to get a coffee and tell the barista your name is "Merry Christmas." So you're protesting a company by BUYING their product? Sure, that makes sense... The Starbucks people are like, "Lol, thanks for your money!"
grapefruit / 4545 posts
I just like the red cup - bc it signifies I can order my peppermint mocha without shame...
Honestly - I dont get the fuss over it. No one is trying to offend anyone by having their holiday graphics on anything. I do get bothered by companies who instruct their employees they have to say "Happy Holidays" only...
Its a nice gesture...does it really matter if someone tells you Merry Christmas?! They are being polite...be happy.
I am Christian - so my instinct is to say Merry Christmas, and I do. That said I would never ever take offense or be bothered if someone said Happy Hanukkah or Happy Diwali to me...wtf people?! With all the hate in the world cant we all just appreciate a nice gesture for what it is...
pomelo / 5678 posts
I actually get it. I can see where the offended are coming from. I don't think it is about being offended as much as it is about being passionately devoted to (those people's) values. But it is starbucks, not exactly the poster child for values...
kiwi / 661 posts
people really like to get upset about stuff that means nothing in my opinion! it's a cup-- does starbucks advertise and align itself as a christian company?
What does chick-fil-a do to celebrate christmas
grapefruit / 4545 posts
@bluestriped bee: agreed - I usually buy a separate pack of cards to send to people I know do not celebrate Christmas...one year my good friend who is jewish yelled at me for doing that...cant win.. apparently she likes her annual dose of Christmas!
@peachykeen: this is what cracked me up too...it wasnt even that the images were religious ones...
pomegranate / 3411 posts
wow, even after watching that video, i have no recollection of what starbucks did to their cups in past years, so i can't be offended if i can't compare. And even knowing the story now, i am amazed that this has become a thing.
wonderful kiwi / 23653 posts
@fancyfunction: apparently both malls have now either changed it or added back the "traditional" background... But then the whole thing did turn off a lot of ppl. I'm in a local moms group and people are so worked up about it! Which I do understand if every year you go and take the same picture and suddenly Santa moved to a spaceship... Lol!
GOLD / watermelon / 14076 posts
@MrsSCB: Yeah, it seems like a better form of protest would be to take the money you'd normally spend at Starbucks and donate it to charity (and given how expensive Starbucks is that would actually be a lot of money!). But I guess these peeps need their coffee too much
wonderful olive / 19353 posts
Nope! Prior to the new light shed on this controversy, I enjoyed the red cup return. It kind of said the holidays are coming and put me in the mood/spirit! Who knew something as simple as the color of a cup could cause such a havoc!
blogger / wonderful cherry / 21628 posts
I didn't notice there was no decorations on the cup this year until I read about the outrage..... so I'm not offended.
apricot / 448 posts
Not at all offended. However, I was really excited to see what the design would be because the fall one was so pretty... So I guess the red cup was just kind of a disappointment lol.. womp womp
