My dog is microchipped only because she is a shelter dog so she came microchipped already.

Yep, both of our dogs are microchipped. They got it done when they were spayed/neutered.

Yup. He tends to stick by us so hopefully we'll never need it. But we decided to do it because it's pretty cheap and our dog doesn't love his collar so he often doesn't wear one.

yep, dogs and cats are all microchipped (with the exception of maybe my oldest cat). I don't use collars unless we're out on a walk, so it's pretty much their only identification (bad, I know, but I fear strangulation and I don't like the way it mats the fur).

There's a dog one neighborhood over who's always getting out, and the only ID they have on him is the rabies tag with their vet's info. I've gotten stuck with the dog after hours, and it's somewhat annoying to walk a lunging lab around until their owners spot him.

Yes. I had to b/c she grew up in a big city. It's very inexpensive and you can just go to your local SPCA to do it if your vet charges too much. Just remember to update your address every time you move.

Our dog is, but I honestly wouldn't know what to do if we needed to take advantage of it.

piper is microchipped -- she is a rescue and and it was part of the agreement with the rescue the she be microchipped. actually, they did it for us!

@Meggo5: if you find out what company the chip is from (Avid, Homeagain, etc), contact them to keep your address and phone numbers updated.

If they ever get lost, call their hotline to report them missing. They usually send out faxes to all vet clinics in the area reporting them as being lost. They will also get you in touch with who found them if the pet is located so they can be returned to you.

My dog isn't and I feel like we should because if he gets out, that's it! He's on a full on dead sprint to heck who knows where. He ran out under a hole in our fence one night and we were so scared that he was gone forever. He's a jack russell so he can RUN!

@lemondrop: Thank you for this-- my dog is microchipped, but I never updated the address info when I moved and forgot who or where I was supposed to contact. It's homeagain, I think, so I'll look that up.

And yes, my dog is microchipped. My ex-SIL worked at a vet so we got it done for cheap. He really isn't a runner, but it's nice to have it just in case. I didn't know they would send faxes out-- that's nice peace of mind.

I thought my cat was because he was adopted from a shelter, but I had to take him to the emergency vet this weekend and when they scanned him they couldn't find anything.

We talked about getting our dog chipped, but she's an inside dog and the only times she goes out, she's on a leash with one of us, so I'm not sure it something that we need to do.

4 dogs and 4 cats...all have micochips.
