@Navy_Mommy: gotcha. Will take a look tomorrow during his nap! thanks so much! I have not been pulling the bottom rail between us, will try that.

@Mommytotwois: I think that's the Infantino sash carrier. You should be able to roll the waist strap before you tie it so the body of the mei tai is shorter if she wants to look around.

@Navy_Mommy: Yes it is an infantino. That is a good idea. How do I keep her from leaning back? It's confusing.. I want her to be able to look around but I want her body snug against mine.

    You are awesome

Ok, here's my question - I'm making the leap to buying my first woven. I've narrowed it down to Kokadi, Didymos, and NatiBaby. Pros and cons? Which would you recommend?
Some specifics to help you out - I want a possible long term wrap, it's hot as heck where we live a good part of the year, and my babe is 3 months old.

@grizz: I've used all three of those!

I've never wrapped with aDidy and thought to myself, "I need to keep this forever!" and I've actually ended up selling all of them to fund other things.

Nati wraps used to always be pretty thick, but word on the babywearing streets is their new wraps have been thinner. I've never used their all cotton wraps but their linen blends tend to be a little beastly to break in. But I love natibaby and I love their selection of patterns, and once they are broken in they're amazing.

Kokadi is amazing. Even their all cotton wraps tend to be super supportive and generally speaking (apart from their scale wraps) really soft straight out of the box.

For a first time wrapper I would recommend a Kokadi. But just to warn you... they're addicting! Lol

@Navy_Mommy: Ooh, and one more question - I've read on the babywearing groups on FB to watch out for fake Kokadis, specifically the Wunderland series. How do I make sure I'm getting one that is authentic?

  11. Navy_Mommy

    nectarine / 2458 posts

@grizz: fake wonderlands?? It'd be pretty hard to fake a woven wrap. Maybe they were talking about faking acolorway? Like my dyed Erna looked like ela, which is "worth" a lot more since it was never part of their standard line.

@Navy_Mommy: Ok, that makes sense and makes me feel better. The wraps that are really giving me the drools right now are the Nati Foggy Elves and the Nati Delin Platino. Swoon!

@Navy_Mommy: How do I create a good seat with my ring sling? It's homemade so I am wondering if that's part of the problem, or I'm just doing it wrong. This is what I've got going on, and I know it's not right... Maybe I just need more practice but any tips would be helpful

@Navy_Mommy: thanks so much for this thread!
Just wondering why people convert woven wraps to ring slings instead of starting with a ring sling?

Also, where would you recommend starting with wovens?

  18. Navy_Mommy

    nectarine / 2458 posts

@sslm: same as Hilsy... you need to pull the bottom rail up between you and baby. There's a video on my blog for ring sling basics I posted a few Wednesdays ago, if you watch that it should help A LOT.

I still have an inside baby (4 more weeks!) We received a K'tan at my shower. i know theres a bunch of options on how to wear it. I find it a little intimidating.....Whats a good/easy way to start and practice with it before baby gets here? I feel like my belly will be in the way. Mom suggested i practice on the hubs

If I'm going to register for one baby carrier that DH and I can both use, which should it be? I'd prefer something I can use from birth, but it doesn't HAVE to be, and I'd like to get a lot of use out of it, so one that works up to a toddler size if possible!

    bananas / 9229 posts

Ditto to @Emsmems: question! I already know I want to babywear but don't know where to begin. I would prefer something DH can use/wear too (I haven't asked him but I doubt he'll mind), and lean towards more of a backpack style carrier (but front) for both of us. But maybe also a wrap for me? And the longer it can be used the better!

I'll be back to answer all your questions!! Right now preggo wants a panera bagel, lol, so W and I are running out.

@oliviaoblivia: like I said earlier, woven wraps are MADE to wear babies with, other "baby carrier safe" fabrics are generally utility fabrics so obviously wrap conversions are more comfortable. Plus they're more supportive. My first ring sling was a used C &C sling that cost me $65.

@oliviaoblivia: I actually posted an intro to woven wraps on my blog last Wednesday. It's a lot of info, but a great place to start If you have more specific questions after reading that lemme know!

  26. Navy_Mommy

@sslm: MUCH better! Is it more comfortable? Practice makes perfect!!!

  27. Navy_Mommy

    nectarine / 2458 posts

@Chillybear: it's really hard to practice before you have a floppy, squirmy baby to practice with. I would just recommend watching lots of YouTube videos to learn as many "tricks" as possible in advance. Just search for baby k'tan newborn and start watching!

@Navy_Mommy: Thanks for your response. I'm sure I'll be revisiting this thread once she gets here for more tips and tricks. Its probably a good thing that my dog is 65lbs or he might have been used as practice...lol

@Navy_Mommy: thanks! Sorry for the dupe questions, I thought you were referring to homemade ring slings. I had assumed the commercially made ring slings were already made with baby wearing fabrics. Good to know!

@Emsmems: @LindsayInNY: if I could only have 1 carrier that both DH and I would share I would personally choose a mei tai over a traditional soft structured carrier. I don't like buckles. And I don't like having to adjust straps (especially if you're going back and forth between two wearers). Is there a learning curve? Yes - you have to practice tying the arm straps, but it's so worth it. If you have the budget for it I would recommend a wrap conversion... but they're expensive. Like, a few hundred dollars. If you can't afford that I would recommend a "custom" (as in not mass produced) mei tai made with canvas. Less expensive than a wrap conversion, more expensive than a mass produced carrier. If you can't afford that, I would recommend a Babyhawk.

If you're opposed to a mei tai the SSC I would recommend is a Tula. They have an infant insert you can buy for newborn wearing and even have "extenders" you can purchase so they have proper knee to knee support through toddlerhood.

I'll come back and link to some conversion artists in case you're interested in a mei tai once I'm on my actual computer.

@oliviaoblivia: the only Babywearing specific fabric out there is woven wrap material. Commercial slings are usually either 100% cotton or 100% linen bottom weight fabric.

  32. Navy_Mommy

    nectarine / 2458 posts

@LindsayInNY: if you get a woven wrap you can use it comfortably and ergonomically from birth to death (I've put my adult sister in a woven wrap before). If you're interested definitely check out my woven wrap post on my blog then come back and ask more specific questions!! I woven wraps.

@Navy_Mommy: definitely feels more secure, but it's hurting my shoulder a bit.

  34. aprk

@sslm: I spread the fabric of my RS down so it cups the shoulder. A little more comfy that way.

I have a challenge for you. I've seen it done but it looked like a PITA, how to baby wear twins. Easily done on your own.

  36. Navy_Mommy

    nectarine / 2458 posts

@Sugar.Biscuit: I've worn two babies with one wrap before! Lol

  37. Navy_Mommy

    nectarine / 2458 posts

@Sugar.Biscuit: tandem wearing isn't easy. My friends who have twins tend to just wear the needier baby. I know you can wear two babies in the front with a stretchy wrap (like a Moby). The safest way to tandem wear is one carrier per kid (so one on the front, one on the back) but you can't do that with newborns. I've also seen people (online) wear two ring slings at once. Your best bet would be to go on facebook to a group like "Babywearing love and support" and ask cuz I know there are a lot of twin Mamas there.

@Navy_Mommy: Just wanted to thank you for this thread and for spreading the babywearing love!

Just got my Gira (earthy rainbow) in the mail a couple days ago. I<3 it. Planning to send it off to Jan at SBP to get it converted to a RS.

One babywearing question I've been considering lately: how will I BW in the winter? I live in Canada....it's cold and there are lots of heavy coats involved. Like, should I just carry DD into wherever it is we're going and then take my coat off so I can wear her?

    nectarine / 2458 posts

@heartonastring: there are Babywearing jackets out there! I live in central California where it's generally warm, but I know they exist.
