@Navy_Mommy: Those coats are nice but SO expensive! I just found this though and now I want it! http://kowalli.com/shop/baby-carrier-cover/

@heartonastring: last year I bought a XXL wool coat from joe fresh that was big enough to go around us both. We're in Toronto and it worked really well for my January baby.

Sorry for butting in, but for anyone wanting to get info on winter babywearing, I wrote this a while back: http://www.hellobee.com/2013/04/18/the-big-chill-winter-gear-for-april/ and I have some experience. I got to personally speak to the inventor of the Kowalli and she is the nicest lady ever. They are really useful and don't even break the bank!

@Mrs. Twine: don't be sorry for butting in! The coldest it gets here is like 50f, lol, so I'm useless for"winter babywearing" advice.
I did take a cheap fleece jacket from old navy and cut a hole in it to wear when it was chilly out last winter though! It was just huge if I wasn't wearing him, lol. @heartonastring:
ETA I hand sewed a few eye hooks on the back to close the hole if I was wearing him on my front...

How do you wrap/sling a baby on your back? I'm thinking about a sling now that E has a little bit better head control. Both DH and I like to baby wear because it keeps him warm, but I'm wondering if it is possible to wear on the back with one person and a squirmy baby.

@Espion: I was actually going to make a video for this soon, but I hurt my back and can't right now. What kind of carrier do you have?
pomegranate / 3577 posts
@Navy_Mommy: I only have an Ergo. I've held off on a ring sling for fear that I wouldn't be able to figure it out!

@Navy_Mommy: & @Mrs. Twine: if someone were to get these three baby wearing options, would that cover pretty much all their baby wearing needs, a basic baby wearing intro collection if you will? are these good ones to start out with or would you swap some for others?
1. Wrapsody Breeze Baby Carrier
http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00AASF9IA/ref=wl_it_dp_o_pC_S_ttl?_encoding=UTF8&colid=3D7EIXN9JH93T&coliid=I3KCN59ZFIMMKC
2. beco butterfly II

3. k'tan

(and a britax carrier, but without much hope of using it http://www.amazon.com/Britax-USA-K011000-Carrier-Black/dp/B00503I252/ref=sr_1_1?s=baby-products&ie=UTF8&qid=1379273005&sr=1-1&keywords=britax+baby+carrier )

@mrs. bird: You know I love wrapsody, and the breeze would be a good intro for wrapping. Relatively inexpensive, easy to get a nice, tight carry, and versatile enough to use with older babies and toddlers. If you are interested in learning how to wrap, a wrap can cover all your bases. There really isn't any babywearing need that it can't service. So beyond a wrap, I would look into trying a handful of other styles (like the beco, k'tan, a mei tei, ring sling, etc.) to see what else works for you (without buying, if possible). Personally, I have to have one shorty wrap (I prefer size three) for quick out-and-about, one longer wrap (size 6) for more long-term carrying, and a ring sling for fast up/down. I guess for a sampler pack I would get one wrap (longer, so you can wrap any carry you choose-- you can always go shorter later if you find you don't need the length for your favorite carries), one ring sling, and a mei tei or other SSC (soft structured carrier).
nectarine / 2458 posts
@Espion: I would clip the waist strap on, then get your baby on your back (I do it the first way demonstrated in this video), then keep one hand on baby's bum while you pull up one strap, then pull up the other strap! Practice over a bed in case there's a mix up, lol
nectarine / 2458 posts
@mrs. bird: I feel like the k'tan isn't necessary if you're getting the wrap and I don't like the britax cuz it's a crotch dangler (a non ergonomic carrier). I think a BBII, wrapsody hybrid, and a ring sling would cover every aspect of your Babywearing needs. I like mei tais more than I like SSCs though (I talked about that earlier inthis thread).

@Navy_Mommy: I really want to try baby wearing this time around. (I wasn't able to do with DD because her hips were VERY stiff the first few months, and then she flat our refused to look inward after that). My biggest concern is the heat... I live in TX and I get hot easily, and so do babies (duh). I have a moby, but both of us would be sweating after wearing it for 10 min. Is there a better alternative that will allow me to wear the baby, but still get some air?
pomegranate / 3231 posts
I just bought a Beco Gemini yesterday! I was planning to get a Soleil but the woman at the shop said they tend to stretch out and sag. I hope she's right because the Gemini is supposed to be hotter.
nectarine / 2458 posts
@BabyBoecksMom: I live in Hades...aka the desert of central California, lol. I could never do the Moby cuz of that. I recommend a ring sling or a breathable woven wrap (linen blends tend to be super breathable, or just a light weight woven). Boba makes a super light weight soft structured carrier called the Boba Air; I have some friends who swear by it for super hot days.
nectarine / 2458 posts
@ElbieKay: A soleil stretch out and sag? I've NEVER heard that; soft structured carriers don't really "stretch" at all and the Soleil is meant to carry bigger babies than the Gemini...are you sure she wasn't talking about a Moby or a Sleepy wrap (those are stretchy wraps).

I haven't read all the way through yet but do have a couple questions. Hopefully all of these have not already been asked.
1. How long can you comfortably wear a NB-6month old in a ring sling?
2. Can you go without a baby carrier and just babywear fulltime when you are out and about with no interruption to babies naps?
Umm I think that is all for now. Just trying to figure out if I can just get a convertible carseat, a stroller and babywear in between. Thanks for answering all these questions!
nectarine / 2458 posts
@anonysquire: I could wear my newborn in a ring sling comfortably for HOURS, probably all day if I wanted/needed to. Some people recommend switching shoulders occasionally so you don't get "lopsided" but I never did (whoops!)
My son is, and always has been, a heavy sleeper. I joke that I could pull him out of his car seat, throw him over my shoulder, then toss him in his crib and he'd still be asleep. I've been able to pull him out of the car seat and even wrap him on my back without him waking up. From what I understand, that's pretty unusual, lol. I do have more than one friend who just skipped the bucket seat and went straight to a convertible seat because they knew they would only babywear, never carry around the car seat. I like bucket seats because I like being able to buckle in my itty bitty newborn while I'm still in the house so I can make sure I get him in there properly; I never let my kid nap in the bucket seat (outside of the car) or carry him around in it.

@Navy_Mommy: best gear to baby wear a preemie? Ring sling? Moby? Ergo? I was scared to death to baby wear with my LO even though I really wanted to. FYI- LO was 4.5 lbs when he left hospital.
nectarine / 2458 posts
@littlek: Not an Ergo. I don't know of any soft structured carriers that can hold a baby that itty bitty. Most of what I've seen (in facebook groups I'm in) for preemies is ring slings or wraps of some sort (either stretchy - like a moby - or woven).
GOLD / squash / 13576 posts
@Navy_Mommy: the moby confused me.. Is there a certain brand ring sling you recommend?
nectarine / 2458 posts
@littlek: If you have the money to buy a wrap conversion, I recommend that above a "plain" ring sling. Sleeping Baby Productions and Babyette are both great converters (if you want to buy a wrap and then have it converted) or you an buy a ready made sling from most wrap companies. I actually have a ring sling piece of a wrap I'm chopping for sale in the classifieds
If you can't afford a wrap conversion Babyette and Sleeping Baby sell "plain" slings as well, or something like a Maya Wrap would also work.

@littlek: I have a longer answer to where you can get a ring sling on the first page of this thread as well!

@Sugar.Biscuit: one of the women in one of my babywearing groups posted a picture wearing both her twins at once and said she followed this tutorial; it made me think of you!!!

@Navy_Mommy: wow. I can't wait to try this! Now find me a wrap big enough for all of us...I'm plus size so do you know if it is harder to find wraps big enough?
nectarine / 2458 posts
@Sugar.Biscuit: you'll need a size 7 or even an 8 if you can find one. A lot of wrap companies don't make 8s. C&Cs come in 6meter length which is like the longest wrap I know, and they're "budget friendly" compared to a lot of brands and come pretty soft before being broken in. They only come in solid colors though - but you could always dye it to spice it up a bit! http://www.risaroo.com/woven-wraps/colimacon-et-cie
nectarine / 2458 posts
@Sugar.Biscuit: Didymos regularly produces size 8 wraps as well (Didymos.de) but it will ship from over seas. Or you could always make your own using a fabric like osnaburg which is most DIY babywearers go-to. You would just need a length of it that you could hem the edges of.

@Navy_Mommy: Just got my WCRS from SBP and I love it!
I followed the tutorials on your blog to thread it and to get DD into it. Does this look right to you? It's only our second attempt!

@heartonastring: looks really good!! A deeper seat wouldn't hurt but that will come easier with practice.

@Navy_Mommy: awesome! Thanks for the speedy response! I'll work on getting a deeper seat next time. I can't believe how comfy it is!

@Navy_Mommy: I have a Beco Soleil and infant insert. I am not sure where my LO's legs should be, though (she's 11 weeks old). Should they be out to the side? She can physically do this but I am worried about messing up her hips (maybe that's silly?). Or should they be down? (When they do this they sorta dangle out the bottom of the carrier.) Thank you!!

I got my ring sling and I love it but I have the problem that when I tighten it, the ring comes down closer to LO and doesn't stay up by my shoulder. Once she's in, it's hard to fix! Help!
honeydew / 7586 posts
Also, I have scoliosis and wearing him in the sling hurts my back a little and causes me to lean more into my curve. Wearing him on the other side feels unnatural, but is that what I should be doing? Or am I just wearing him incorrectly?
nectarine / 2458 posts
@birdofafeather: @rahlyrah: you want to start with the sling just barely loose enough to get Lo in. The more you have to tighten it, the more the rings will move down. Have you watched the ring sling videos on my blog?
nectarine / 2458 posts
@rahlyrah: having him face out will put SIGNIFICANTLY more strain on your back.
honeydew / 7586 posts
@Navy_Mommy: He hates facing in! He is so curious, he wants to see everything.
Maybe we will work on facing in more often to get him used to it. He will do it in the ergo, but I haven't had much luck with the sling.
nectarine / 2458 posts
@rahlyrah: try putting him more on your hip than your front so he has an easy 360 degree view.
