So now that I am at nearly 36 weeks, I am starting to think about what happens after this kid is born. I keep reading that the baby needs to be fed every two to three hours during the first two weeks and that you should wake him/her up even during the night to ensure that the baby gets enough milk (and also to prime your supply). Honestly, this recommendation seems like it violates some kind of human rights treaty. It means that the mother is getting only an 1.5 hour or so stretch of sleep at a time, which surely constitutes torture. I know that if the baby wakes up, I'll certainly tend to him and feed him, but if he happens to go 4 hours is this depriving him? This is all assuming he is born without weight issues obviously.
What did you do? Did you wake your newborn every two to three hours at night? Do you think I am silly for even asking this because the newborn will certainly wake me up that often?
