Curious what other people do. I feel guilty for not asking LO this year (2.5) but I think she will change her mind a thousand times if she even got the concept.

I think she was probably 2.5. Lots of ideas and changing her mind so we went to the costume store a few days before Halloween and she chose one - a shark! Super cute.

This year at 3.5 years old. She was 2.5 last Halloween and honestly didn't really care/understand the concept for me to feel bad. She loved the costume I made her.

This year at 3.5. Last year she didn't even know what Halloween was. Same as @Freckles: I made her costume. She was the beautiful butterfly from The Very Hungry Caterpillar and she just loved that she had a tutu and wings! She got a kick out of her sister being the caterpillar.

My daughter will be 3 in December. She definitely understands the concept. I'm going to let her pick, even though right now that means tracking down a horse costume.

Last year, at 2.5, she picked. She wanted to be a pumpkin.
This year she is insanely picky and there's no way I'll ever have any say in her costume again!
She wants to be Ariel, and I even showed her an Ariel costume and she said "no, that one's tail isn't shiny enough." Picky picky!

He's not really old enough to grasp the concept so I was really going to go for something I thought was hilarious.
However, I feel like if I asked him if he wanted to be a dinosaur or dragon, he'd say "yes!". So, I'm having a bit of guilt about this. Don't know what to do! aha

She's a few months shy of 3 and has been saying she wants to be Abby from Sesame Street, so that's what I'm working on creating.

We're in the 2.5-3 bracket and LO will choose hers! She' started talking about Halloween like 3 weeks ago (not sure why) and picked her costume. I haven't bought it yet, and won't until we're much closer, but she hasn't changed her mind yet!
When others make suggestions she vetoes and says her idea again.

this year we let dd pick. shes 2y9mo. we asked her what she wanted to be and its elsa all day every day. she already has her costume and wore it a couple days in a row when we first got it. now i have to hide it
last year she didn't understand it enough to pick a costume.

This year she will have just turned 3, last year she had no clue at turning two so I got 3 years of picking myself (although the first she was a 30 day old baby haha)
This year she's chosen to be a Pirate Princess....so there's that

I think D started picking at 4. He could have picked at 3, but I was a single mom and got a costume as a hand me down, so he didn't get a choice.
M will probably want a choice next year at 2.5. But, I won't let it be open. He can pick from 3 or 4.

He will be 3 and I am letting him pick this year. He didn't really care last year.

Last year at 2y4m I had a costume picked out for her and then a few days before Halloween, the handyman asked her in the elevator what she was going to be. Sheproudly and emphatically said "a bat!"...which of course was not what I'd purchased. Thank goodness for Amazon Prime!
I'll definitely ask her this year, and will not purchase early!

She picked it this year, 2.5. I gave her suggestions since she had HFM last year and missed, I don't think she knows what it is really. But she was excited when her costume came in the mail.

I'm letting her have a say but not choosing completely. Like you said, it changes a lot. So I want her to be something she will be excited about, but that I like, since by next year I feel like she will definitely be pickier.
So far it's either doctor, tiger, or ladybug. All things I suggested but that she likes. Probably tiger though.

We bought a race at driver costume last year that he refused to wear (he was 2.5) and luckily it still fits this year. So he pretty much isn't getting a choice! It's a good thing he still likes race cars!

I'll let her choose as young as she wants. But I don't know when she'll be old enough to understand.

My kid doesn't get it yet and I like family costumes. I've picked things that she likes though: last year bubble guppies and this year Daniel tiger. I'm sure next year at 3y9m she's gonna get the concept and have opinions!

@Rainbow Sprinkles: lol!
He's only 18 months so I'm picking. Maybe next year he will pick.

Last year at 28 months - she didn't really waffle, she wanted to be Minnie Mouse and that stayed firm every time I asked

@travellingbee: that's awesome! I think this is what my LO would pick if I asked!
I bought a clearance monkey costume last year so he's going to be a monkey! I did the same thing the year prior and he was Pooh. He's too little, I think, to really get it.

@regberadaisy: Seriously! I'm trying to plant the seed early this year for what I want her to be so she thinks it was her idea

@kodybear: My LO is Anna every day, oddly enough in an Elsa gown. I think she'd choose Anna if she understood that she could be anything. However, DH has drawn a line on Frozen and said she won't be anything from Frozen. Maybe I should just make it his problem.

She had a say last year at 2, and I've talked her into something this year.

@Corduroy: I am feeling conflicted about frozen too!! LO is 3y9m. Last year I let her pick with help and she came up with a stop light and I made a super cute costume. This year I swear since June she has been saying "Elsa". I was really hoping to avoid Disney until she was older.
But a few weeks ago we were talking about it and I asked what she would be if she couldn't be Elsa. She thought about it and said "Anna". I asked what if she couldn't be Anna or Elsa and she just said she didn't know in this little sad voice. So I caved! I like to make her costumes but it is not happening this year and I know she will wear the costume a ton for dress up.

We're letting him choose this year at 3.5. Last year was his first year dressing up for Halloween, and he didn't fully understand it until it was happening, but this year he's stoked for it, so we're letting him pick. So far it's between a ghost and Buzz Lightyear.
