My two year old uses a fluoride free toothpaste by babyganics and I just wonder when I can start using something more effective on her teeth. At what age do kids start knowing how to spit when they brush? I am also taking her for her first dentist visit this month so they should be able to give us more advice too

@Mrsbells: LO just turned 2. We started fluoride (Tom's) about a month ago . She know show to spit it out; 75% of the time.

My dental hygienist said at around four years. No personal experience yet though, sorry!

@NurseMommy: wow 4 years?... Can't wait it to get an appointment for her to see a dentist for the first time! More than anything I was to be reassured I am cleaning her teeth right

We use the foaming toothpaste because I couldn't get him to brush with regular. 20 months. Spits in sink about 19m

I took my LO to the dentist for the first time at 16 months and was told to start with fluoride toothpaste now. LO doesn't know how to spit yet, plus we can only brush her teeth if we lay her on our laps on the floor, but we use just a tiny amount of toothpaste where I think it is ok. The dentist told us to just hold the tip of the toothpaste to the brush, squeeze until the toothpaste touches the brush and let go. Even when she brushed LO's teeth with fluoride toothpaste, she did not attempt to get her to spit.

We've been using fluoride toothpaste for a few months, ever since the ADA recently changed their guidelines and said that they recommend regular toothpaste for kids as soon as their teeth make an appearance. She doesn't spit it out, sometimes she will try to mimic me but she hasn't gotten the hang of it yet.

Our dentist had us switch to regular toothpaste at 15 months. She gets hardly a smear though.
