Who let's anyone hold your baby if it's not your nurse?? Okay, who let's someone take your baby outside of your room without you going with them??????? Our baby never left our sight the whole time she was in the hospital - including her hearing test which is the only time she left our room - my husband went with her.

Looks like it happened right after discharge, so the baby's security band was removed. My question is why do they sell the hospital stamped scrubs to anyone off the street? Scary!

OMG that is so scary! I can't imagine how crazy you would have to be to steal a baby...

@Anonysquire: The article doesn't indicate that the scrubs were hospital stamped, only that the woman was wearing "black hospital-style scrubs" and that the top had "UPMC" letters on it (which sounds more like embroidery than a stamp).

I don't think my daughter had a band while she was in their NICU. Seems like they will have to rethink their protocol.

This is awful, prayers for the family and safe return of the baby!!!
Sounds like it was a lot of miscommunication but I don't think it's fair to point fingers at the parents in this situation. She was in nurse scrubs, obviously very similar to the ones being worn in hospital, very scary.

Baby was found alive and well: http://www.wpxi.com/news/news/local/breaking-news-baby-kidnapped-magee-womens-hospital/nRJHK/
I worked in the nurseries at Magee for 2 years. You wouldn't believe the number of parents that handed their babies over to me to take out of the room, no questions asked. I don't necessarily believe you have to keep an eye on the baby every minute you're in the hospital but there are safeguards that are supposed to tell you who is authorized to take the baby. At Magee for example, the people with clearance to take a baby from a room had a pink stork as part of their badge. And the babies, while they are patients of the hospital, have ankle security bracelets that require skin contact to be active. If those go off, the doors to the unit automatically close and stay locked until the alarm is cleared. I can report I have seen nurses go RUNNING down the hall when those things go off. So, while you can't prevent everything, I really do think Magee has a good system in place and is still a great hospital. There are still a TON of questions to be answered about how this happened. And how to prevent it from happening again.

@earinej: Whew, glad to hear it ended up ok. My nephew was born at Magee and their security procedures were pretty stringent, I thought.
