For the last few weeks LO has had huge patches of rough alligator skin on his body. Half of his trunk and one of his thighs is covered in it. It isn't red or inflamed (unless he gets really hot and then it shows up in red patches that soon disappear) and doesn't seem to bother him. We have tried piling on the lotion but nothing helps. Anyone's LO have this? Did you ever figure out what it is? Anything that helps?

Could be eczema. We use aquaphor, and also a prescription cream.

we use aquaphor but many times it isn't enough. The pediatrician prescribed us a stronger hydrocortizone to keep on hand for bad patches, and it usually clears things up within a day.

I'd take him to a dermatologist. I've battled skin issues my whole life and lotion is not really always the answer.

@CMOMMA17: eczema occurred to me because I have it and it runs like crazy in my family but it doesn't seem red, irritated or itchy but then maybe it doesn't present the same way in babies? We have his 4 month on Monday so I will ask the doc to look at it then

It might be patches of eczema. You can try Aquaphor a few times a day; but sometimes you might need something stronger like a hydrocortizone prescribed by a doctor. I would definitely bring it up at his next appt. The key to Aquaphor is to put it on immediately right after a bath to help absorb it in faster. I put it on both of my boys (almost 2 and 5) head-to-toe since they were babies b/c of eczema. They don't have it anymore but it helps with dry skin. It's greasy but they shower before bed time so they're not smearing it around the house.

@tillma: our ped diagnosed LO with eczema and it seems like it can present in different ways. He has a few red spots, but also areas that are just dry/rough with no redness.
I'd pay your doctor a visit to be sure. The prescription cream we got is fairly inexpensive and heals things up super fast! -
Sounds like exczema. Take him to the dr! Babies can have lots of weird skin stuff

I agree with everyone who has said eczema. My LO has patches of it and it's not itchy or especially red; for her it looks a bit like ringworm. It took a visit to the derm to confirm; and an RX keeps it at bay.
We use Cetaphil and CeraVe lotion and really slather her up.

Our doctor said eczema, even though there was no redness. Just like you, lotion wasn't helping us much. We spent a few weeks in CA and that made it virtually disappear-I have no idea why! Maybe the cold winter air, heaters, etc. triggered it.
