What do you consider the basics for the newborn, 0-3, and 3-6 month stages?
How many onesies, sleepers, bundlers, socks, caps, outfits... what do you consider the ideal closet for baby?

Wagon Jr. was a winter baby, so we had 5-7 long sleeved onesies, 5-7 short sleeved onesies, 2-3 pairs of pants, 3 pairs of mitts, plenty of hats, 5-7 sleeping gowns, 2-3 miracle blankets (swaddling blankets), plenty of socks (8-10 pairs?) and 2-3 nice outfits for going out.
LMW is a summer baby and got bigger faster so we went from onesies to footed sleepers quickly this time. She basically lives in those each day. And then of course plenty of cute outfits for going out.

LO was a summer baby so I would say 14+ onesies (some with pants, a few long sleeved but mostly short), 7 footed sleepers, 8 swaddling blankets, 2-3 nice outfits, a few pairs of socks and a couple caps. We were gifted a lot in the small sizes though, especially things like jeans which he hardly ever wore!

Boy:
2 knit-waist jeans
2 knit pants/sweatpants
2 pants - cords, cargo, trouser, etc
8-12 onesies, for layering or colored ones (like Carters sets) for summer
5 dress shirts, and/or long sleeve tops
2 sweaters
Now that DS is in sizes longer, he definitely has MUCH more than that.
Girl:
5 dresses
2-4 tights/leggings
2 knit waist jeans/pants
8-12 onesies
4 tops such as long sleeve
2-3 sweaters, at least one cardigan
For both:
2 winter hats
pair of mittens
2 pairs of shoes in each size (size 1, size 2, size 3) that STAY ON (so far only Pedipeds and Robeez stay on)
6-10 pairs of socks
2 jackets
6-10 PJs
2-3 sleepsacks (not needed until baby isn't swaddled anymore)
4 swaddlemes (if of swaddling age)
I would say considerably LESS for NB stage. Just sleepers, preferably 5-8 and 1-2 outfits for going out (I had a soft knit overall and onesie set as well as fitted knit pants, onesie and button cardigan).
A little more for 0-3 than NB, but less than what I outlined.
And that is the perfect amount for 3-6 months. Cobi is 8 months and STILL in 3-6 mos so we've gotten a lot of good wear out of his clothes!

I am insane. So I did things by outfits. The only time the baby wore just a onesie was when he was sleeping. He was born in May and if I put him in your standard pj's he would sweat, so he just started wearing pajamas. I would say I had 20 outfits. 10 every day, 5 dressier, and 5 comfy. I also hate laundry and LO would average 2 outfits per day. He never fit in NB clothes.

NB: anything that snaps, I wanted to avoid putting anything over her floppy head. Side-snap sleepers, footed everything. We didn't take her out much so no real outfits.
0-3: she finally started wearing onesies paired with pants and socks, or rompers for when we'd go out. Sweaters on top of the romper when it was chilly. But footed sleepers were still what she mostly wore. She got to wear dresses that were gifted to her but I'm not a fan of the dress + tights combo. I find it fussy to hold her with it on (always adjusting it).
3-6: She mostly wears onesies + pants now with cute socks. A sweater on top of it. I'm still a fan of rompers. I still don't like dresses, but she has to wear them eventually (gifts). She still wears sleepers, but mostly not footed. The ones with feet, I'm making sure runs big so she can actually wear them for awhile.
6-9/12: My mom's bought her all her big girl clothes. Skirt/tights combos, pants, onesies, jean dresses. Basically the same stuff as 3-6, but more variety.
I can't wait for her to be able to wear dresses, I love the way they look, but I personally don't think they're practical before she learns to walk. I hate having to always fix them, or stopping her from eating the dress.
As for how many? It depends on how often you want to do laundry.

BTW, I made the mistake of going crazy with sweaters in 0-3 and 3-6. I should have stopped myself! There's a few she never got to wear 2 cute cardigans in different colors would have been fine. The rest should all have been in larger sizes.

I am insane and have always been a little over-the-top with Cs wardrobe. I would say our essentials as a newborn were:
10 Onesie and pants sets
5 Sleepers (she wore fleece ones as a Nb)
Socks
At least 1 cardigan/jacket
She owned, and wore, much more than that, but that would be my minimum I think.
Now, at 7 months old, its more like:
Onesie/shirt pants sets
Jackets/cardigans
Tights and socks
Mary janes in black and white
Tennis shoes (she has converse)
Sleepers
Sleepsacks
At least 2 winter hat/mitten sets
Winter coat
C goes out decked in full gear, including shoes and a bow, every single day. Girl likes to look her best. She wears a lot of stuff like dresses, tutus, skirts, etc as well.

I'm the wrong person to chime in because I'm nutso when it comes to clothes. Honestly I have too much. For the first few months she lived in sleepers. She HATED having anything pulled over her head so I skipped onsies altogether. So my advice is to stock up on those plus probably 5 or 6 hats for the early months. My LO wore hats a lot because she wasn't gaining weight fast enough. The pedi suggested hats and they worked really well. This is mostly what I dressed her in, and still, the one pieces are some of my favorites.
For the 3-6 month and on I would definitely say at minimum you need 10 outfits. LO can easily go through 2-3 a day, depending on the day. I use both short and long sleeve onsies underneath if it's not a "onsie" outfit because it's chilly out. Honestly though, my favorite outfits are the onsies with comfy pants. I just think that is what I would want to wear every day if I could. haha. I usually have a few really nice outfits too, for when we go special places. And definitely 4 or 5 sleepers. This should get you through the week if you do laundry twice. I also have a handful of sweaters or sweatshirts (and a couple fleece vests - so cute!) in case it's a bit chilly.
I'm not a big fan of baby tights, at least not at 4 months old. I'm big on putting leggings underneath a dress or skirt. The one thing I was short on early on was socks. I now have a ton and I like them to match. LO has dozens of bibs as well, since she's a big spitter. Sadly, I try and coordinate these when I can too. It's just so cute when she's dressed and coordinated from head to toe.
Seriously, I need to look into consigning her used clothes because I buy way too much. Exclusive of sleepers, I could probably easily go 2+ weeks without doing laundry. Yes, I have a serious problem! lol

Another wrong person to ask. I love dressing up L and have a little shopping problem
For nb she basically lived in footed pjs. She hated anything being pulled over her head. I had two hooded fleece jackets (she's a feb baby), a few hats (she hated them so we mostly used her hood), a few mittens (never stayed on). I bought more outfits once she hit 0-3 but the mainstays were still footed pjs. I'd guess I had anywhere between 10-15 sets? She was constantly spitting up and having blowouts so we easily went through 3-4 pairs daily.
Now at 8 months, her closet is mostly "real" clothes.

My september baby just lived in footy sleepers and onesies with footed pants until about 6 months, maybe? Underneath the winter warm suit. I also had some tights with a built in skirt, and that was totally awesome. I started with the outfits after that.

You ladies are making me feel good about all the shopping, er stocking up, I've been doing for baby! I don't have that much stuff for each size yet I guess! So far I really haven't bought anything in NB size, I figure it will be used so minimally and we'll probably get that stuff at the baby shower. But seeing this list, I might have to get some footed sleepers if we don't get any/enough after the shower.

@shopaholic: we had two showers, after which we didn't get as many clothes as we expected and the clothes we did receive were at least 3 month+... i actually had to buy nb onesie sets and a few footed sleepers so we'd have enough for the first month or so! (i'll let you know what we actually end up using!)

So far, we've been using footed sleepers and long sleeved onesies with leggings. He fits perfectly in NB sizes (he was born 7lbs 11oz and is now 8lbs1oz at 16days old) but can do 0-3 as well. I would say 6 or 7 sleepers and 6-7 onesies with pants to go along--I personally like when he fits his stuff exactly, so I like having him in NB onesies and pants, but don't mind if his sleepers are a little big. I also usually only put him in sleepers for bedtime and change him into onesies with pants every morning. He also has a NB fleece jacket and a 0-3 jacket that is big on him. We also have plenty of socks and a handful of hats.

When LO was first born, she lived in gowns-They're awesome because you can pull them up (so you don't have to put them over their head) and you don't have to deal with snaps. LO was on the petite side (6 lbs, 4 ounces and 19 inches) and is long waisted, so the sleepers never fit her right. When we went out, I loved sun suits (or bubbles-same diff) and swing tops and bloomers. We had 5 or 6 gowns and 2 or 3 sleepers...
Now that its getting colder, we do a lot of long sleeved onesies and leggings. She loves to pull her tops and dresses up over her head so I've kind of given up putting her in those sorts of things.

@mrsjyw: I do remember you saying that before! I'm just going to wait and see what happens! But I'm learning on here more and more that you do need SOME NB sizes! You only have 2 more weeks to go!
@hilsy85: I will have to consider this count when I get closer, thanks! p.s. you need to share more pics of baby Leo!
