You should try it, maybe he's ready. My lo was fighting me so hard when I tried to rock her to sleep, we had been doing that for months but before she turned 6 months, it was no longer working. I finally gave up and laid her down in her crib and she put herself to sleep. It was shocking, but I guess it was her way of trying to let me know she didn't want to be rocked to sleep anymore. @MsBam: It seems like he's ready for a different way of going to sleep. Are you planning on sleep training? I would see how it goes, give it a try if you are ready. You can always try again at a later point if it doesn't work out but it could also work, you don't know until you try. Temperament plays a big part for sleep training and there are many different methods of sleep training. Does he have a moderate temperament or is he a high needs baby? Have you tried putting him to bed drowsy but awake? You can try putting him to sleep drowsy but awake and see if he can settle himself to sleep. If he starts crying you can rock him and try again. If he's not having it, you should try rocking to sleep. These are things I would try for going to sleep for the night and naps. I would still nurse for night wakings and help him sleep whatever works the best and fastest- nursing and sneaking away or rocking to sleep. That's good he's been sleeping for over an hour, he's making it past one sleep cycle. His naps should start to get longer, progressively

DS2 will nurse to almost sleep but then I have to get DH to take him and rock him for a minute before putting him down. If I try it when he stirs he wants to nurse.

@MsBAM: I think you have to think of it in order of priority. The priority is to get him to take longer naps without nursing by himself. If, for a while, that is in a swing, that's okay in the greater scheme of things. Eventually you can approach moving him from a swing to a crib over time (some people, for instance, switch off the swing and once they are sleeping without swinging in the swing seat, they attempt the crib, etc).
