I know you don't want to make one but that's what we did - just made more sense. DH attached it to one side and it swings open and latches when closed - that way its permanent and can stay outside all the time rather than bring in and out.

Is there something you're trying to protect her from? Or just a big open area in general?
If the latter the only one I can think of is like one of those baby jails. How old is LO? -
@locavore_mama: Just from going down the stairs. There are about 9 steps that she could just fall down. We have a huge deck and she loves being outside. She is 12 months.
@Mamaof2: Do you have plans or something? I do think it would be the best to just build on in the long run since we want another LO.

We have a Babydan. It's supposed to be a playpen, but it's meant to come apart and pretty versatile (you can add and take segments out). It's metal and we plan to use it around the grill during the summer, but right now it's surrounding our fireplace. We did have to buy wall mounts since it didn't come with it. But buying the playpen was still a better deal since it's a lot bigger (especially if you're using it for the backyard and need a wider area to section off).

@Smurfette: you have a railing around the deck I assume?
I would just go to home Depot or Lowe's then and pick up a wood gate and some extra spindles if needed. stain to match your railing?
Or if you feel it'll be impossible to match paint it a contrasting color? -
@locavore_mama: Yes, there is railing around the whole deck. When we bought the house it had a sunken hot tub. We just got rid of it, and patched the hole. DH cleaned the deck but we are waiting to restain till the new wood weathers more. So not worried about it matching.
DH just called me and said that he already found a plan online and he is planning on making it this weekend. Shows what I know!

@Smurfette: I was gonna say I could send you a pic but it sounds like your DH already found plans - our is super simple, no plan needed, just some 2x4's and spindles to match the deck!
Its so nice to be able to "lock" the kids on the deck!
