Posting for a friend:
I need a baby gate here. We've tried tension mounted but because of the detail on the pillar, it makes them ineffective. Would rather not drill into the wood, but I'm ok with drilling into the wall. We have a similar problem at the top of the stairs but it's dry wall on both sides, but it doesn't match up, so the gates would be at an angle.
Anyone deal with this problem?

Have you considered using zip ties to "mount" a block of wood to the detailed staircase, then drilling into that? You can use the block of wood as a shim. you can get an angled piece of wood, too.

We have a similar staircase, and the previous owners drilled into the pillars. I cringe looking at the screws in the wooden pillars, but at least they left the gate for us. Once we're done having kids, and they're older, we'll remove the gate and screws and patch them up with wood putty. Hopefully the patch work isn't too noticeable!

and it's tension mounted, but the feet would fit on the squared portion of the pillar and against the wall. It's a very small round foot.
Otherwise I would shim it like this.

I've got this and it works exceptionally well. We've had it for over a year and have had no problems!

I would use a wood block as a shim on the newel post. They also sell adapter kits for a lot of the baby gate systems.

@NaturallyCathy: we have this exact gate too on our tricky top double banister. It feels secure and Norah has never had a problem with it.

We have retract-a-gates and love them. We'll have a similar stairway issue in our new house and we'll use a retractable gate with the bannister kit.

@autumn865: I've had both kids on that bottom step, holding the bars, and shaking it. Besides it trembling it's never budged. We've had to tighten it a few times but it's never been about to fall down loose or anything. Really secure!
